Notizen: The size and structural dependence of the magnetic properties of RhN clusters (3≤N≤27) are studied by using a d-electron tight-binding Hamiltonian which includes hybridizations, Coulomb interactions, and spin–orbit coupling on the same electronic level. We show that the spin (S) and orbital (L) magnetic moments depend strongly on the local environment of the atoms and that their behavior as a function of the cluster size present oscillations which are in good qualitative agreement with experiment. The magnetic anisotropy energy and the anisotropy in L are quantified by considering different directions of the spin magnetization S within the cluster. We conclude that orbital contributions to the average magnetization in RhN clusters could be important for precise comparison with experiment. Bond-length relaxation effects are also briefly discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present a case of cardiac tamponade associated with placement of a central venous catheter (CVC) via a peripheral vein in a 14-year-old girl with idiopathic scoliosis undergoing corrective surgery. A number of complications have been described in association with CVC misplacement. Sporadic cases of cardiac tamponade from this have been reported, but the actual incidence is unknown. Death from cardiac tamponade attributed to CVCs ranges from 65 to 100%. In our patient, cannulation of the pericardiophrenic vein was probably the cause of cardiac tamponade, based on radiological evidence that the initial location of the catheter was near the right atrium and possibly at the outlet of the pericardiophrenic vein. The catheter could have advanced into the vein and then to the pericardial sac with postural changes. The acute clinical course of cardiac tamponade in our patient had potentially lethal hemodynamic repercussions. The main diagnostic test for this condition is echocardiography and the only effective treatment is drainage of the pericardial effusion. Echocardiography should be performed before pericardiocentesis except in life-threatening situations or high clinical suspicion. Although they are rare, it is important to be aware of the potential for CVC complications.

Notizen: 1. The effects of streptozotocin-induced diabetes on disposition and hepatic handling of cefmetazole, a broad-spectrum cephalosporin, were investigated in rats.2. Male Wistar rats were pretreated with streptozotocin (60 mg/kg, i.p.) to induce uncontrolled diabetes. Fourteen days later bile flow was significantly reduced (12%) and bile acid secretion was significantly enhanced (87%) when compared with control animals.3. Following intravenous injection of cefmetazole at a dose of 200 μmol/kg, maximal and cumulative biliary excretion of the antibiotic were significantly impaired in streptozotocin-treated animals (27 and 22%, respectively).4. Cefmetazole excretion into bile was accompanied by marked choleresis. The magnitude of bile flow increase was larger in control animals.5. Total systemic clearance of the antibiotic was reduced (36%) and mean half-life for the fast and slow phases of disposition increased (136 and 48%, respectively) in diabetic rats.6. These changes were probably due to the diabetic condition of the animals because insulin treatment resulted in almost complete cofrection.

Notizen: 1. The influence of the antifungal agent clotrimazole on cytosolic glutathione S-transferase activities was studied in male Wistar rats.2. Animals received clotrimazole by gastric lavage for 3 days (75 mg/kg per day). Hepatic glutathione S-transferase activity was determined with five different substrates: 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB), 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene (DCNB), p-nitrobenzyl chloride (PNBC), ethacrynic acid (EA) and trans-4-phenyl-3-buten-2-one (TPBO).3. The largest increases in glutathione S-transferase activity were found with CDNB, DCNB and PNBC (+ 61%, + 50% and + 50%, respectively, when expressed per mg of cytosolic protein). Enzyme activity toward EA was induced to a lower extent (+ 33%). Changes in the formation of the conjugate of TPBO were relatively small (+22%).4. These data indicate a differential induction of glutathione S-transferase isoenzymes and suggest that clotrimazole is a phenobarbital-type inducer of enzyme activity.

Notizen: A study of the Pinguipes chilensis Valenciennes 1833 diet was carried out on 414 specimens captured on the Talcahuano, Chile coastline (36°41′S; 73°06′E) between October 1998 and March 2000. P. chilensis, endemic to the southeast Pacific (from Tumbes, Peru to Magallanes, Chile), is confirmed as a general predator over a wide trophic spectrum including 61 taxa. Crustaceans (mostly mysids, but also a wide variety of decapods) made up the principal dietary component, followed by fish and annelids. Prey belonging to Mollusca, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, Rhynchocoela, Sipunculida, Echiura and Urochordata were also present. There were no significant differences between male and female diets, although they shared only 32 prey. A significant dietary difference was found, however, between analysed size groups: specimens under 30 cm total length (TL) preyed mainly on the amphipod, Ampelisca araucana; those over 30 cm TL preyed on the mysid, Neomysis sp.; and those over 40 cm TL on fish, annelids, molluscs and echinoderms. Seasonal differences, due in large part to the dynamics of the prey species, were also found to be significant. Crustaceans were the predominant prey throughout the study with the exception of autumn, when fish were the most common prey.

Notizen: A preliminary study of the gill parasites from 61 common dentex (Dentex dentex, Pisces, Sparidae) was developed. Seven parasite species were found: one monogenean (Microcotyle erythrini), one udonellidean Udonella caligorum), one digenean trematode (Stephanostomum sp. metacercariae), three copepods (Caligus productus, Caligus diaphanus and Clavellopsis fallax) and one isopod (Gnathia vorax, praniza larvae). Only 1.6% of the fishes examined presented one parasitic species whilst the remainder had two parasitic species (13%), three (26%), four (21%), five (20%) and six different species (18%). The udonellidean U. caligorum was found as a hyperparasite or phoront of the three copepods. Prevalence and other ecological parameters as well as the spatial site of each parasite in the gill tissue are described. The multiparasitic combinations are also examined.

Notizen: The aroA gene of Yersinia ruckeri, which encodes 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase, was insertionally inactivated with a DNA fragment containing a kanamycin resistance determinant and reintroduced by allelic exchange into the chromosome of Y. ruckeri 21102 O1 by means of the suicide vector pIVET8. The Y. ruckeri aroA::Kanr mutant was highly attenuated when inoculated intraperitoneally into rainbow trout, with a 50% lethal dose of 〉5 × 107 CFU. The mutants were not recoverable from the internal organs 48 h post-inoculation or later. The vaccination of rainbow trout with the AroA mutant as a live vaccine conferred significant protection (relative percentage survival = 90%) against the pathogenic wild-type strain of Y. ruckeri.
