Notizen: Summary Classic medulloblastoma is a relatively common and distinct clinicopathologic entity consisting of primitive multipotential cells with differentiating capacity to neuroblastic and/or glial cell lines. Desmoplastic medulloblastoma has some features in common with cerebellar neuroblastoma, in which ultrastructural evidence of significant neuroblastic differentiation is extremely rare. We studied three cerebellar tumors with evidence of neuronal differentiation as compared to four classical desmoplastic medulloblastomas. Two of three tumors contained the regions of different degrees resembling desmoplastic medulloblastoma and one consisted of neuroblastic cells exclusively. This spectrum of differentiation suggests a relationship between cerebellar neuroblastoma and medulloblastoma, especially of the desmoplastic type. The nature of cerebellar neuroblastoma and its nosology are briefly discussed.

Notizen: Summary A cerebellar tumor of a 4-month-old girl was examined by light and electron microscopy. The presence of numerous synaptic vesicles in many cell processes and the occasional synaptic devices warranted the diagnosis of neuroblastoma of the cerebellum. The nature of the tumor is discussed briefly.

Notizen: Summary An unusual tumor of the pituitary gland is reported. The most characteristic finding of the present tumor was the presence of numerous “colloid” and mucoid secretions. The cells were stellate in shape and there were intra- or intercellular lumina which were lined by many microvilli and occasional cilia. There were also large accumulations of 10 nm filaments in their cytoplasm. Junctional devices were well formed at the points of mutual contact of these cells. They thus correspond to fetal follicular cells of the anterior pituitary lobe. For this reason, “folliculo-stellate cell adenoma of the pituitary” would best characterize this hitherto undescribed neoplasm.

Notizen: Summary The case involves a colloid cyst of the third ventricle in a 20-year-old man. The lining epithelia of the cyst were composed of two different types of epithelial cells; stratified squamous cells and mucincontaining columnar cells. The presence of both squamous and glandular cells in the cyst wall supports the contention that the colloid cyst in the present case derived from an non-neuroepithelial source. The clinico-pathology of this cystic tumor is compared here with other epithelial cysts of the central nervous system (CNS), especially Rathke's cyst.

Notizen: Summary An atypical case of senile dementia is reported which shows senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, granulovacuolar degeneration, and Hirano bodies and numerous Lewy bodies in the pigmented neurons of the brain stem, and Lewy-body-like inclusions in the cerebral cortex. The inclusions in the cerebral cortex had a strong resemblance to the Lewy bodies in the substantia nigra, though a few histochemical and ultrastructural differences were observed. The pathological findings were unexpected since the parkinsonian syndrome was not recognized.

Notizen: Summary Abnormal Schwann cell inclusion is reported in biopsied peripheral nerve in a cases of infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy. In addition to non-specific dystrophic changes of the axons, the Schwann cells contained several distinct bodies which were composed of stacks of irregularly disposed membranes; in some instances, transformed Schwann cell cytoplasm was distinded with similar bodies. This change has not been reported on this condition and its significance is briefly discussed.

Notizen: Summary A case of primary cerebral rhabdomyosarcoma in a 51-year-old female is reported. The histogenesis of this tumor is discussed. The clinicopathological features of 10 previously reported similar tumors of the CNS are briefly reviewed. Histologically the tumor was polymorphic, but composed of poorly differentiated cells interpreted as rhabdomyoblasts without definite cross-striation. Electron microscopy established that the poorly differentiated cells were of rhabdomyosarcomatous nature, compatible with presumptive myoblasts and analogous to developing fetal muscle.

Notizen: Summary In a study of experimental autolysis of peripheral nerves of normal Wistar rats, crystalloid inclusions similar to Hirano bodies were observed. They occurred in the nuclei and cytoplasms of Schwann cells and in myelinated axons. They first developed after a 12-h autolysis and increased in number and size with time. Their fine structure, localization, and morphogenesis are discussed in relation to the autolysis of the cellular organelles.

Quelle: Springer Online Journal Archives 1860-2000
    Thema: Medizin
Notizen: Summary A rare case with pleomorphic intra-neuronal polyglucosan bodies is reported. A 45-year-old man died of gastric carcinoma with extensive visceral involvement. The autopsy showed numerous intra-neural pleomorphic PAs-positive deposits reminiscent of Bielschowsky bodies in the lateral segments of the pallidum, substantia nigra, and brain stem on both sides. Their histochemical properties were consistent with polyglucosan. The bodies were ultrastructurally composed of filamentous structures and seen in perikarya, axons, and dendrites. Occasionally, spotty electron-dense material was seen in the center of the bodies. The filaments were selectively stained with thiocarbohydrazide method after Thiéry, indicating their chief component as glucose polymers. The bodies are compared with Bielschowsky bodies, Lafora bodies, corpora amylacea, and related bodies, and their nature and significance are briefly discussed.

Notizen: Summary The fine structure of the hypertrophic olive is reported in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy, the cause of which would be attributed to extensive symmetrical lesions in the dentate nuclei of the cerebellum and central tegmental tracts of the pons. Ultrastructurally, the enlarged neurons and their processes showed massive aggregations of neurofilaments, large accumulations of concentric laminated bodies, and occasional abnormal neurofibers (paired helical filaments and straight tubules). Their implications are briefly discussed in relation to olivary hypertrophy. Eosinophilic globules were seen in a neuron. Glomeruloid bodies were not seen.
