Notizen: Abstract Densities of aqueous solutions of mixtures of dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) have been measured as a function of total molality at constant composition and the apparent molar volumes of the mixtures were derived from the density data. The partial molar volumes of monomeric surfactant mixtures, the molar volumes of mixed micelles, and the volumes of formation of mixed micelles were evaluated and are compared with those for decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) and DTAB mixtures. The partial molar volumes of monomeric surfactant mixtures and the molar volumes of mixed micelles are observed to depend linearly on the monomer and micelle compositions, respectively. Although the volume of formation of mixed micelles of the DeTAB-DTAB mixture depends on the micellar composition, that of the DTAC-DTAB mixture is observed to be almost independent of the micellar composition. This suggests that the volumes of the counter ions in the micellar solutions are almost equal to those in the monomeric solutions.

Notizen: Abstract A thermodynamic treatment of the volumetric behavior of surfactant mixtures in water have been developed on the basis of the thermodynamic treatment of mixed micelle by Motomura et al. Densities of aqueous solutions of mixtures of decyltrimethylammonium bromide (DeTAB) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) have been measured as a function of total molality at constant compositions. The apparent molar volumes of the mixtures have been derived from the density data and the mean partial molar volume of monomeric surfactant mixture V t w , the molar volume of mixed micelle VM/N t M , the voluem of formation of mixed micelle Δ W M V, and the composition of surfactant in the mixed micelle have been evaluated. The V t W , VM/N t M , and Δ W M V have been observed to depend on the composition. The linear dependence of V t W and VM/N t M on the composition indicates that the mixing of DeTAB and DTAB is ideal both in the monomeric and micellar states. This has been confirmed further by the shape of the critical micelle concentration vs. composition curves.

Notizen: Abstract A simple statistical mechanical theory is presented to explain phase diagrams of fluid mixtures with both a lower critical solution temperature and an upper critical solution temperature under pressure. By postulating a temperature dependence for the interaction free energy parameter of the constituent molecules and a pressure dependence for the excess volume, phase diagrams with both lower critical solution temperature, and upper critical solution temperature and their pressure dependence can be reproduced by quadratic surfaces in temperature-concentration-pressure space. The topological aspects of the observed phase diagrams in this space have been related to our theoretical model, and the thermodynamical meaning of the topologies has been interpreted based on our model. Experimental data for the mutual solubility of water and 2-butanol under pressure and that of water and 3-methylpyridine with added salts have been analyzed quantitatively and theoretical parameters are determined.

Notizen: Cell membranes consist of lipid bilayers in which proteins are embedded. Many cell functions are carried out at the cell boundary which interface with water. Here we describe the response to an anesthetic of a lipid bilayer and of an enzyme separately. While both systems are markedly affected by anesthetics at appropriately high concentrations, the result at the clinical concentrations seems best explained as principally an effect on the protein somewhat accentuated by its presence in the lipid bilayer. Thus the lipoprotein complex seems to have the properties of the protein alone, except with somewhat greater induced sensitivity due to the lipid matrix in which it is immersed.
