Notizen: The structure of a model colloidal suspension in the vicinity of a charged wall is studied in the framework of the Derjaguin–Landau–Verwey–Overbeek interaction potential and the hypernetted-chain approximation. Here we consider the case of dilute suspension of highly charged macroparticles interacting with weakly repulsive, neutral, and attractive walls. As the wall–particle electrostatic interactions become successively less repulsive, the formation of a monolayer of colloidal particles, strongly adsorbed onto the surface, is predicted by our results. This monolayer of electrostatically confined particles mimic the effect of an effective surface charge distribution adjacent to the wall which, together with the bare wall surface charge, induces on the other, nonconfined, colloidal particles the same local-concentration profile as that in front of a highly charged and repulsive wall.

Notizen: The contribution to the friction coefficient of a charged spherical polyion diffusing in an ionic solution due to its interactions with the electrolyte ions is calculated, in the absence of hydrodynamic interactions, starting from a formal expression for ζel previously derived by Medina-Noyola and Vizcarra-Rendón. It is shown that such a formal expression can be given a particularly simple form in terms of the equilibrium distribution neqi(r) of the small ions around the tracer, which allows us to study effects ignored in Debye–Hückel level theories. We consider, for example, the effect of a finite size of the small ions and nonlinear contributions to ζel on the polyion charge. We show that the correct Debye–Hückel limit differs from Schurr's result for ζel, and the source of the disagreement is clearly exposed. The results derived here for ζel are not restricted in the number of species of electrolyte ions or in their charges or mobilities.

Notizen: The idea of the rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) is extended to describe the local concentration profile of a suspension of highly charged particles near a charged wall. The predictions of this essentially analytic approximation for the wall–particle correlations, under conditions that the "rescaling'' is needed, are in excellent quantitative agreement with those of the HNC approximation. It is found that the structure of the inhomogeneous suspension (the magnitude and relative spacing of the oscillations in the local macroparticle concentration, as a function of the distance from the wall) only depends on the bulk properties of the suspension. The charge density of the wall only contributes to determine the displacement of this local structure away from the wall.

Notizen: A mixture of charged hard spheres (restricted primitive model) with an attractive Yukawa tail added to represent van der Waals forces between the ions is considered as a model of molten salts. The location of the critical point of the gas–liquid phase transition is followed as a function of the strength A of the attractive term. It is found that the critical density increases with increasing A, but that a quantitative agreement between the theoretical results and the available experimental estimates of the critical constants for alkali halides requires the use of an effective dielectric constant greater than unity.

Notizen: The time-dependent tracer-diffusion properties of a nonspherical Brownian particle that interacts with a suspension of spherical particles are studied in terms of an idealized but nontrivial model system for which the predictions of the generalized Langevin equation approach to tracer diffusion can be calculated, and compared with the results of a computer simulation experiment. In the model, the nonspherical particle is represented by a linear array of NT (=2 or 3) spherical particles with nearest-neighbor separation ΔL. For this model, we calculate the rotational and the (transversal and longitudinal) translational mean squared displacements, both, directly from the computer simulation, and approximately using the generalized Langevin equation approach. The theory is found to reproduce qualitatively and quantitatively the main features of the results of the simulation experiment for these properties. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present a Brownian dynamic simulation of the translational and rotational motion of an interacting nonspherical Brownian particle. This simulation experiment involves an idealized model system of a suspension of spherical colloidal particles with which the nonspherical particle interacts. The latter is represented as a rigid linear array of (two or three) spherical particles. The direct pair interactions between all the spheres in the system (including those of the tracer particle) are modeled by a repulsive Yukawa potential. For simplicity, the two-dimensional version of this simulation experiment is considered, and hydrodynamic interactions are ignored. From the simulation experiment, we determine the translational and rotational mean-square-displacement of the nonspherical tracer particle. Here we focus only on the early deviations, due to the direct interactions, from the short-time, free-diffusion regime. In the analysis of these results, use is made of the recently developed Generalized Langevin equation theory of tracer diffusion of nonspherical Brownian particles. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effects of a finite size of the small ions (counterions and ions of 1–1 electrolytes added to the supporting solution) on the structural properties of solutions of spherical micelles are studied. This study is based on the primitive model of the solution and the mean spherical approximation. The structure obtained using the primitive model is contrasted with that of the one component macrofluid model for these systems. At high ionic strengths, interesting effects are observed in the short-range correlations between the macroparticles, directly related with the finite size of the small ions. Similar effects are also observed on the structure of the electrical double layer around each macroparticle. The consequences of these results for the interpretation of recent neutron scattering experiments from ionic micellar systems are briefly discussed. It is found that for small amounts of added salt a given experimental structure factor can be reproduced with a smaller effective charge on a micelle in the present model than in the previously used one-component macrofluid model. For large amounts of added salt, however, the finite size of the small ions may give rise to the opposite trend.
