Notizen: In this work we develop a unifying and general method for calculating linear viscoelastic properties of multicomponent colloidal mixtures of spherical particles. Using linear response theory based on the many-body Smoluchowski diffusion equation, we derive an exact expression for the zero shear rate shear relaxation function, together with a Green-Kubo formula for the static shear viscosity. From these results, we obtain an exact expression for the high frequency elastic shear modulus of colloidal mixtures. We present, in addition, the first derivation of a self-consistent mode coupling scheme for the linear viscoelasticity of concentrated colloidal mixtures. This scheme offers the opportunity for a unified description of linear viscoelasticity and diffusion mechanisms. It accounts further for polydispersity and mixing effects, and leads naturally to a diverging shear viscosity at a glass transition point. Various limiting cases are considered to assess the accuracy of the approach. It is shown to be a valuable method for evaluating the rheological properties of concentrated colloidal mixtures. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this work we develop a general method to examine cooperative diffusion, i.e., the partial dynamic structure factors, in multicomponent colloidal mixtures of spherical particles. Using a multivariable projection operator formalism based on the many-body Smoluchowski diffusion equation, we derive an exact microscopic expression for the matrix of irreducible memory functions associated with the partial dynamic structure factors and the long-time cooperative diffusion coefficients of the system. Starting from this microscopic expression, we present a derivation of a self-consistent mode coupling scheme (MCS) for cooperative diffusion in colloidal mixtures. This scheme accounts not only for the direct particle interactions, but also for the far-field part of the solvent mediated hydrodynamic interactions. Combined with our recent work on the mode coupling theory of tracer–diffusion and linear viscoelasticity of colloidal suspensions, this MCS provides a unified method for calculating dynamic and low-shear rheological properties of multicomponent colloidal dispersions. The MCS can be used to study polydispersity and mixing effects in concentrated colloidal systems. Some applications related to cooperative diffusion, interdiffusion, and glass transition in binary mixtures are discussed to illustrate the method. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effects of a finite size of the small ions (counterions and ions of 1–1 electrolytes added to the supporting solution) on the structural properties of solutions of spherical micelles are studied. This study is based on the primitive model of the solution and the mean spherical approximation. The structure obtained using the primitive model is contrasted with that of the one component macrofluid model for these systems. At high ionic strengths, interesting effects are observed in the short-range correlations between the macroparticles, directly related with the finite size of the small ions. Similar effects are also observed on the structure of the electrical double layer around each macroparticle. The consequences of these results for the interpretation of recent neutron scattering experiments from ionic micellar systems are briefly discussed. It is found that for small amounts of added salt a given experimental structure factor can be reproduced with a smaller effective charge on a micelle in the present model than in the previously used one-component macrofluid model. For large amounts of added salt, however, the finite size of the small ions may give rise to the opposite trend.

Notizen: Abstract We study the combined effects of electrostatic and hydrodynamic interactions (HI) on the short-time dynamics of chargestabilized colloidal spheres. For this purpose, we calculate the translational and the rotational selfdiffusion coefficients, D s t and D s r , as function of volume fractionφ for various values of the effective particle chargeZ and various concentrations ns of added 1−1 electrolyte. Our results show that the selfdiffusion coefficients in deionized suspensions are less affected by HI than in suspensions with added electrolyte. For very large ns, we recover the well-known results for hard spheres, i.e. a linearφ-dependence ofD s t andD s r at smallφ. In contrast, for deionized charged suspensions at smallφ, we observe the interesting non-linear scaling propertiesD s t ∝ 1−atφ4/3 andD s r ∝ 1−arφ2. The coefficients at and ar are found to be nearly independent ofZ. The qualitative differences between the dynamics of charged and uncharged particles can be well explained in terms of an effective hard sphere (EHS) model.

Notizen: Summary Charge-stabilized suspensions are characterized by the strong electrostatic interactions between the particles so that rather dilute systems may exhibit strong correlation resulting in a well-developed short-range order. This microstructure, quantitatively described by the pair distribution functiong(r), is rather different from that of (uncharged) hard spheres. It is shown how this difference affects the «hydrodynamic function»H(k), which appears in the expression for the first cumulant Γ(k)=k 2 D eff(k)=k 2 H(k)/S(k) of the dynamic autocorrelation function. Without hydrodynamic interaction,H(k)=D 0, which is the free-diffusion coefficient. Using pairwise additive hydrodynamic interaction and the lowest-order many-body theory of hydrodynamic interaction, it is found thatH(k) can deviate considerably fromD 0 even for systems of volume fractions ϕ as low as 10−3. These effects are more pronounced for collective diffusion than for self-diffusion. SinceH(k=0) is closely related to the sedimentation velocity, we have studied this quantity as a function of volume fraction. It is found that (H(0)/D 0) −1 scales asφ 1/3 at low ϕ in salt-free suspensions.

Notizen: Abstract Exact relations are derived which represent the high-frequency elastic moduli of colloidal suspensions of charged spherical particles in terms of integrals of the static structure factor. The only assumptions are the form of the interparticle potential as a screened Coulomb potential and a sufficiently high charge per macroion so that the radial distribution function at contact is zero.
