Notizen: Summary A mutant ofHydra attenuata is analysed, theaberrant, which is distinct from the wild type in having a smaller head with fewer tentacles and only half the number of head-specific cells. The rate of head and foot regeneration and the doubling time are slower inaberrants than in normal hydra. The lower head-forming potential is paralleled by a reduced concentration of head-specific morphogens: compared to the wild type, in theaberrant the concentration of head activator is reduced to 70% in the head and to 50% in the body, the concentration of head inhibitor is reduced to 50% in the head and to 80% in the body. Theaberrant is more sensitive (3 times) to added head activator and less sensitive (〉5 times) to added head inhibitor than the wild type. The slower rate of foot regeneration is paralleled by a lower content of foot-specific morphogens: compared to the wild type, in theaberrant the foot activator is reduced to 40% and the foot inhibitor to 70%.

Notizen: Summary Minis have a doubling time of 2.4 days, maxis of 8 days.Minis regenerate head and foot 5 h faster thanmaxis.Minis have fewer tentacles (4.6) per head thanmaxis (6.1). Inmini the concentration of the head activator is equal to that inHydraattenuata, but the concentration of the head inhibitor is reduced (2-fold in the head, 1.2-fold in the body). The concentrations of the foot factors are normal.Minis respond likeHydra attenuata to head activator, foot activator and foot inhibitor, but they are less sensitive to head inhibitor Inmaxi the concentration of the head activator is higher than inmini (5-fold in the head, 10-fold in the body) and that of the head inhibitor is also higher (4-fold in the head, 5-fold in the body). The concentration of the foot inhibitor is normal, that of the foot activator is doubled.Maxis are insensitive to added head activator and less sensitive to added head inhibitor and foot inhibitor. Their response to foot activator is normal.

Notizen: Summary Non-budding mutants ofChlorohydra viridissima regenerate heads 6 h faster thanHydra attenuata and the number of tentacles per head is higher. The polarity in pieces from the gastric region is the more labile, the smaller the pieces are. In regenerates heads and tentacles form much more frequently than feet, giving rise to bipolar or multiheaded structures. Buds very seldom form under normal conditions, but they occasionally occur in regenerating animals with two cut surfaces. The higher head-forming potential in the mutant is paralleled by a higher head-activator concentration (20-fold in head, 4-fold in body), than inHydra attenuata, which is not accompanied by an equivalent increase in head-inhibitor concentration (1.4-fold in head, 2-fold in body). The foot-activator concentration is slightly reduced (1.3-fold), the foot-inhibitor concentration is higher (1.6-fold) than inH. attenuata. The mutant is extremely insensitive to head activator, relatively insensitive to head inhibitor and foot inhibitor, but sensitive to foot activator.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract Goals of this study were to quantify patients' preferences for anaesthesia care and to identify what they know about various tasks of an anaesthetist. On the day before surgery, 122 patients scheduled for elective procedures were interviewed using a structured questionaire.A reliable pain relieve and unawareness as well as stable vital functions have priority in patients' preferences. Patients are also concerned with good postoperative pain relieve and the avoidance of nausea and vomiting. Not important are short preoperative soberness, rapid awakening and initial wide awakeness. Not informed about typical tasks of an anaesthetist are 28–51% of the patients. In order to obtain maximum patient satisfaction, a thorough education plus further continuous training are the essential items for a patient orientated health care management in anaesthesia, along with good medical and technical equipment. The wide spectrum of tasks of an anaesthetist must be better represented in order to strengthen the position of anaesthesia in the competition for rare ressources. A postoperative visit, which is judged of 77% of the patients as important, offers a beginning.

Notizen: Abstract  A new derivatization method for aromatic amines is presented based on the bromination of the aromatic ring system in an acetic acid medium to yield bromo derivatives. The derivatization method is very simple to perform and overcomes several problems common in the analysis of polar aromatic amines. The derivatives are easy to extract with pentane and can be separated with gas chromatography. Due to the introduction of the electron withdrawing bromo substituents sensitive detection using an electron capture detector is possible. The method was used to investigate the contents of amino- and aminonitrotoluenes in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant.

Notizen: Abstract  Aminobenzoic acids are of major interest in clinical analysis, but their determination in environmental samples has been rarely done. Therefore a method for the determination of 10 aminobenzoic acids in water has been developed, using high-performance liquid chromatography with combined diode array and fluorescence detection. A separation of the analytes has been achieved with a buffer pH 3/methanol gradient. The general elution order has been m-substituted〈p-subst.〈o-subst. aminobenzoic acids. UV and fluorescence data are presented. In a highly polluted water sample of the former ammunition plant Stadtallendorf/Hessen, 4-aminobenzoic acid, 2-amino- benzoic acid and 2-amino-4-nitrobenzoic acid have been detected. After passing a charcoal filter, only the concentration of 4-aminobenzoic acid in a sample from the same site has been above the detection limit. Besides the ten analytes investigated, several unknown compounds have been present in the samples.

Notizen: Abstract An analytical method for the determination of aromatic amines in water is introduced that uses iodination with a Sandmeyer-like reaction to replace the amino group by iodine in aqueous solution. The non-polar derivatives are extracted with pentane or toluene, separated with gas chromatography and sensitively detected with an ECD. Thirteen major metabolites of nitroaromatic explosives were investigated. The method was used to analyze these metabolites in water samples from the site of a former ammunition plant. The results are compared with the derivatization of aromatic amines via bromination of the aromatic ring.

Notizen: Abstract Light-limited batch cultures of Synechococcus spp. strains PCC 6301 and WH 8103 exhibited a positive correlation between the specific growth rate and the cellular content of both RNA and DNA. The ratio of RNA to DNA increased with the growth rate in Synechococcus sp. strain WH 8103, as it does in heterotrophic bacteria, but remained constant in Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 6301. The cellular content of nucleic acids decreased during light periods and increased during dark periods in Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 6301 entrained by 12-h light/ 12-h dark (diurnal) cycles. This result was unexpected in light of experiments demonstrating a circadian increase in transcriptional activity during the subjective light periods and a decrease in transcriptional activity during subjective dark periods. The cyclical variation in cellular nucleic acid content during diurnal cycles appears to be in part a function of the timing of cell division and will influence estimates of in situ growth rates or relative abundances of cyanobacteria using oligonucleotide probes complementary to 16S rRNA.

Notizen: Summary A total of 17 patients with angiographically proven coronary artery disease and at least one stenosis blocking ≥ 70% of the left anterior descending or circumflex artery were included in a double-blind, randomized study. They received either 5 mg carvedilol or 6 mg propranolol intravenously. Heart rate, aortic pressure, mean coronary sinus pressure and coronary flow (thermodilution) were measured and coronary resistance and the rate-pressure product were calculated before and 25 min after injection. Carvedilol significantly (P 〈 0.05) lowered the heart rate (mean, 76 to 69 beats/min), aortic pressure (mean, 153/80–135/72 mmHg), rate-pressure product (mean, 117–93 mmHg/min), and coronary flow (mean, 114–94 ml/min). Coronary resistance (mean, 0.97–1.07 mmHg × min/ml) and coronary flow related to the rate-pressure product (mean, 1.0–1.02 ml/mm Hg) showed no significant change after carvedilol treatment. Propranolol lowered the heart rate (mean, 76–64/min;P 〈 0.05) and rate-pressure product (mean, 109–96 mm. Hg/min; not significant). Aortic pressure (mean, 145/72–147/74 mmHg), coronary flow (mean 109–101 ml/min), coronary resistance (mean, 1.1–1.2 mmHg × min/ml), and coronary flow related to the rate-pressure product (mean,1.12–1.19 ml/mmHg) showed no significant change after propranolol administration. Following single application, carvedilol lowered the rate-pressure product more markedly than did propranolol on account of its acute blood-pressure-lowering effect. No differences in the hemodynamic effects of carvedilol and propranolol were found. Neither drug seems to influence the adaption of coronary flow to myocardial oxygen demand.
