Notizen: SUMMARY— Kennebec and Red Pontiac potatoes were analyzed for fatty acids at intervals during growth and maturation of the tubers and subsequent storage at 4°C. During storage linoleic and linolenic were almost the only polyunsaturated acids present, but during growth and maturation considerable amounts of unidentified polyunsaturated acids were found. The percentage of polyunsaturated acids in the dry weight of tuber decreased to a low value near harvest time and remained near this value throughout the 6.3-month storage period, except that the value in Pontiacs stored 19 days was somewhat high. The percent of polyunsaturates in the total fatty acid fraction also dropped to a low value during growth and maturation but increased somewhat during storage. For this reason it may be better, when practicable, to make dehydrated products from freshly-harvested rather than from stored potatoes.Potato dice contained as much polyunsaturated acid as the tubers they were made from; potato flakes contained somewhat less. In both products the degree of unsaturation of the fatty acid fraction was the same as for the tubers. NO off-flavors were noticed when samples were reconstituted. Apparently little or no oxidation took place during the processing.

Notizen: Abstract Aldosterone and dexamethasone stimulate sodium absorption in the rat colon in vivo. In vitro, increased amiloride inhibitable short-circuit current (ISC) has been demonstrated following aldosterone or dexamethasone treatment. Since ISC bears no relationship to sodium flux (JNa) in the untreated rat colon, we measured JNa in partially stripped voltage clamped segments of rat distal colon. Our results demonstrate directly that continuous infusion of aldosterone or dexamethasone for 4–7 days stimulated amiloride inhibitable JNa by stimulating JNaM-S. The amiloride inhibitable portion of JNaM-S was highly correlated with and approximately equal to the amiloride inhibitable ISC. Amiloride had no effect in controls. We conclude that JNaM-S in the rat distal colon is only sensitive to mucosal amiloride after treatment with aldosterone or dexamethasone. the amiloride sensitive ISC in these treated tissues was a good measure of the amiloride sensitive JNa. Small differences between aldosterone and dexamethasone treatment were noted in the effect on transepithelial resistance, potential difference, and the ISC after amiloride.

Notizen: Abstract Since the introduction of a recent laparoscopic ultrasound (LU), the value of this modality in examining the liver and pancreas has been reported. However, a precise scanning technique of LU has not previously been described. Based on our experience with intraoperative ultrasound during laparotomy, we have developed a technique for complete examination of the entire organs using a rigid LU probe. A 7.5-MHz rigid probe, 10 mm in diameter, was employed. The scanning was performed through three trocar ports: right subcostal, subxiphoid, and umbilical. For the liver, the subcostal scanning provided fundamental transverse views. The subxiphoid and umbilical scanning delineated the areas unable to be imaged by the subcostal scanning. For the pancreas, the subcostal and umbilical scanning demonstrated longitudinal and transverse views, respectively. The subxiphoid scanning enhanced examination of the pancreatic head. Three basic probe maneuvers (advancement-withdrawal, lateral movement, and rotation) and various scanning techniques (contact, probe-standoff, and compression scanning) should be utilized appropriately. With a rigid probe, complete LU examination of the liver and pancreas is possible using these techniques. We believe the present scanning method will help more surgeons learn LU.
