Notizen: Summary We describe postmortem findings in a patient with human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I)-as-sociated myelopathy (HAM). The patient developed the disease 8 years after blood transfusion and showed good response to corticosteroid treatment but died of cardiac failure. Histologically, chronic, mild meningoence-phalomyelitis was noted predominantly involving the bilateral lateral and anterior columns of the middle to lower thoracic segments. The spinal cord lesions showed obvious loss of myelinated nerve fibers and fibrillary gliosis with minimal inflammatory cell infiltration. Electron microscopy of the lesion revealed disintegration of the myelin sheaths, regular separation of the minor dense line of the myelin sheaths, and completely demyelinated axons. In addition, remyelinated fibers with thin central myelin sheaths and disproportionately large axons were seen frequently. These findings indicate that primary demyelination and remyelination by oligodendrocytes occur in the spinal cord lesions of HAM.

Notizen: Summary Acute aortic thrombosis associated with spinal cord infarction in a 47-year-old man with nephrotic syndrome is described. He was admitted to our hospital presenting with the nephrotic syndrome. Renal biopsy revealed mild mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. The urinary protein excretion rate transiently decreased after the start of treatment with prednisolone, but it increased again and was followed by the development of the signs and symptoms of spinal cord infarction, which was diagnosed by magnetic resonance signal abnormalities, and then symptoms of ischemia in the lower limbs. Digital subtraction angiography revealed an obstruction at the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta. Emergency thrombectomy was performed, and the arterial blood flow was reestablished. Laboratory data on the fibrinocoagulation system showed a hypercoagulable state. In this case, fibrinocoagulation abnormalities due to the nephrotic syndrome led to the hypercoagulable state, and dehydration might have triggered the thrombotic complication.

Notizen: Abstract The pathophysiology of the striatum and cerebral cortex were studied from the pharmacological aspect. Investigation of the dopamine content in the cerebral cortex revealed that the premotor and motor area showed the highest level (61±6.2 ng/g). Intravenous injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) at a dose of 10 mg/kg reduced the dopamine content in the caudate nucleus and putamen to 2–3% of the control level in common marmosets, while it fell to 60% in the nucleus accumbens. There was no alteration of the dopamine content in the cerebral cortex. Immunohistochemical staining for tyrosine hydroxylase in the midbrains of MPTP-treated marmosets showed almost complete disappearance of dopaminergic cells from the substantia nigra and good preservation of cells in the ventrotegmental area. Dopaminergic cells projecting to the caudate/putamen, nucleus accumbens, and cerebral cortex showed marked, moderate, and no vulnerability to MPTP, respectively. After systemic administration of MPTP, dopaminergic neurons projecting to the caudate nucleus and putamen were damaged equally. However, the compensatory increase of dopamine turnover was more prominent in the putamen than in the caudate nucleus. Thus, nigroputaminal dopaminergic neurons may have a higher level of activity than neuron in the caudate. The neural connections and functions of the caudate nucleus and putamen have already been differentiated anatomically or physiologically. This compensatory increase of the dopamine turnover rate is another aspect of functional differences between the caudate nucleus and putamen. Investigation of the dopamine content in the heat, body, and tail of the caudate nucleus showed no differences in the concentration of dopamine. However, a study of the metabolic rate of dopamine using α-methyl-p-tyrosine, a tyrosine hydoxylase inhibitor, showed higher metabolism of dopamine in the head of the caudate nucleus in common marmosets. Thus, dopaminergic neurons projecting to the caudate nucleus may show topographical differences in their firing rates. A microdialysis study indicated an increase in the metabolism of adenosine in the striatum of MPTP-treated animals. Cholinergic neurons are interneurons and are one of the main sources of adenosine in the striatum. Dopaminergic input from the substantia nigra acting on cholinergic neurons was decreased following MPTP treatment. The increase of adenosine metabolism suggested that cholinergic neurons in the striatum receive inhibitory inputs from nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons.

Notizen: Abstract  High aspect ratio micro-fabrication method using metal injection molding (MIM) is developed. In the MIM process, the powder is mixed with the binder and the mixture is injection molded. The binder is extracted from the molded parts using supercritical carbon dioxide, and the parts are sintered. Employing this process, micro-pattern which has aspect ratio more than 5 can be molded by stainless-steel powder. In this method, a micro-pattern made by laser ablation is used as a die. As compared with other micro-fabrication techniques, this method can utilize the molding die repeatedly. Consequently, the cost of production micro-parts can be decreased by this method in the actual production process.

Notizen: Abstract A novel spectroscopic method for highly sensitive detection of hot-band transitions based on infrared-infrared double resonance in a molecular beam was successfully demonstrated. The intensity of the infrared transitions from a vibrationally excited state is enhanced by two orders of magnitude by resonant laser pumping. The hot-band transitions are identified in connection with the assigned transitions in the fundamental band. Doppler-free spectral lines are observed. The experiment was carried out on the 2v 3←v 3 transitions of CH3F with CO2 laser pumping and probing.

Notizen: Abstract. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films were grown by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) on (111) Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) substrates. The second harmonic of YAG laser (532 nm) with a high laser fluence was employed to produce YIG droplets efficiently. It was found that YIG films prepared at RT substrates have a large number of solidified droplets of various sizes. Highly oriented YIG crystals were grown on the (111) GGG substrate heated at 860 °C by PLA using a large number of molten droplets, suggesting an LPE-like growth. This YIG film shows a small ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth of 7.5 Oe. This value is quite small for films prepared by vapor-phase epitaxy techniques.

Notizen: Abstract. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the utility of helical CT in assessing the therapeutic effects of endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL). Twenty-four patients with esophageal varices were examined. Helical scanning was initiated 60 s after intravenous injection (Iopamidol 300 mgI/ml, total 120 ml, 3 ml/s) was started. Esophageal varices were clearly depicted as high-density areas. Multiplanar reformation and 3D images demonstrated collateral circulation three-dimensionally. After EVL, mucosal high-density areas had diminished markedly, but collateral veins around the esophagus, and gastro- and/or spleno-renal shunts, were unchanged in all patients. Of 21 patients with collateral circulation, esophageal varices recurred endoscopically in 6 patients within 12 months. In 3 patients without collateral circulation, esophageal varices did not recur within 12 months. From these findings, we conclude that helical CT is a useful method for assessing the therapeutic effects of EVL.

Notizen: Abstract Pseudohyperkalaemia was observed in 3 of 16 patients with Kawasaki disease showing remarkably increased platelet counts. Their plasma potassium concentration, which is not affected by in vitro coagulation, was in the normal range despite the increased serum level. A significant correlation was observed between the platelet count and the increase in the serum potassium level resulting from blood coagulation, which was estimated by subtracting the plasma potassium level from the serum level. This study indicates that pseudohyperkalaemia should be considered in patients with Kawasaki disease whose platelet counts are markedly increased.
