Notizen: A good understanding of the capabilities of commercially reared fish species to regulate intake of specific macronutrients has potential economic, welfare and environmental benefits. We present a conceptual and experimental framework for studying macronutrient intake in fish. This ‘geometric’ approach addresses the multidimensional and interactive nature of nutrition. It was developed from work on insect herbivores and has successfully been applied to mammals and birds. The various components of the framework are introduced in simple outlines, and key experimental designs are described for assessing whether or not fish specifically regulate their intake of macronutrients, how they balance over-ingesting some nutrients against undereating others when provided with suboptimal diets, and how they regulate growth post-ingestively.

Notizen: [Auszug] WE entomologists are a frustrated lot. It is blindingly obvious that insects are both beautiful and amazing, so why doesn't everybody else realize this? Granted, the aesthetic appeal of many insects is perhaps a tad difficult to convey to those poor souls without an entomocentric view, but ...

Notizen: Summary. We describe and extend a graphical approach to quantitative nutrition that focuses on the interplay between behavioural and physiological components of nutritional regulation. The site of integration is the nutrient transfer function, which is the function describing the time course of nutrient transfer between serially connected nutritional compartments (e.g., from the gut to the blood). The relationship between the shape of the nutrient transfer function and the temporal patterns of feeding determines the values of two key quantitative parameters of nutrition: the rate ('power') and the efficiency of nutrient acquisition. The approach can be extended to consider, in addition to the short-term behavioural and physiological decisions made by animals, some ecological determinants and longer-term, life history consequences of such decisions. Most importantly, this category of models can provide insights into the interplay among the various nutrients in an animal's diet. We illustrate this using hypothetical examples, and also present preliminary data for the power-efficiency relationships of protein and digestible carbohydrates in locusts. Finally, we consider existing evidence for the various means available to these and other insects for regulating such relationships.

Notizen: Conclusions We have attempted to illustrate the importance of nutrient transfer functions and their key quantitative parameters, power and efficiency. While this brief account has focused on one aspect of nutritional behaviour, the duration of intermeal intervals, the models are equally useful for understanding other components of feeding behaviour such as meal size and food switching. Like-wise, they provide a framework for formulating quantitative predictions about the dynamics of the physiological processes involved in digestion, absorption and the utilisation of food. These aspects are dealt with more fully elsewhere.

Notizen: Abstract The design features of gustatory systems are considered in relation to the need for insect herbivores (or indeed any animal) to regulate their nutrient intake. The gustatory system (defined to include both peripheral and central components) should ideally be designed to reflect: (a) the average nutritional requirements of the insect during its various developmental stages; (b) the ‘predictably unpredictable’ variation in nutrient supply-demand which occurs about that average; and (c) the distribution and composition of foods available in the environment. A mathematical model is presented which makes detailed predictions regarding behavioural and electrophysiological responses to foods or simple solutions varying in nutrient content.
