Notizen: [Auszug] Reciprocal crosses were attempted using C. annuum and C. pendulum as parents. The cross involving C. pendulum as female parent was successful and produced F! seeds. But the reciprocal cross involving C. annuum as female parent was not successful. When, however, C.annuum was used as female parent in ...

Notizen: Disease severity, based on six parameters (time from inoculation to flecking, and eruption of uredinia, uredinial density and the amounts of urediniospoies produced), was assessed on leaf discs cut from four cultivars of Populus spp. raised with either a long (15 h) or a short (10 h) photoperiod. The discs were inoculated with race 4 of Melampsora medusae and subsequently incubated with either a long (15 h) or a short (10 h) photoperiod. While disease severity, based on most parameters, was lower in discs from the continuing long photoperiod (15 h pre- and 15 h post-inoculation) than from the continuing short photoperiod (10 h pre- and 10 h post-inoculation), maximum severity was developed by discs given a combination of a short pre- and a long post-inoculation photoperiod. The relative contribution of the cultivar, the pre- and the post-inoculation photoperiod and their second- and third-order interactions to variation in disease severity depended on the parameter employed to assess severity. The parameters used are elements of disease monocycles and their possible significance in modelling epidemics is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We report a case of coeliac axis thrombosis and splenic infarction presenting in a girl of 14 years who had been on the oral contraceptive pill (OCP), Marvelon (ethinyloestradiol 30 μg plus desogestrel 150 μg, Organon, Cambridge, UK), for 3 weeks. She had no other risk factors for thrombo-embolism. Diagnosis was made with duplex Doppler ultrasound and confirmed with dynamically-enhanced comput‐ed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography, thus avoiding the need for percutaneous arteriography. Though mesenteric thrombo-embolic disease is recognised in association with use of the combined OCP, it has not previously been reported to affect the coeliac axis. Paediatricians and surgeons should be aware of the risks to young girls on the OCP, and consider it in their differential diagnosis of the acute abdomen.

Notizen: Summary Inheritance studies involving Coorong and Satu triticales showed that each possessed a single dominant gene for resistance. The genes were allelic or closely linked. The relative frequencies of Sr27 (Coorong gene) and Sr Satuin a sequence of International Triticale Screening Nurseries were similar. However, a significant increase in the frequency of entries with SrSatu occurred in the 17 International Triticale Screening Nursery (ITSN).

Notizen: Abstract One hundred and thirty-eight chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients completed the Breathing Problems Questionnaire (BPQ) before and after a comprehensive programme of rehabilitation. Examination of the changes on individual items showed improvement on 22 items, of which four items were significant at p 〈 0.05 and deterioration on nine items, of which two were significant at p 〈 0.01. All deteriorating items were consistent with lifestyle adaptations encouraged as part of the rehabilitation programme. We examined the psychometric properties of a reduced ten item version of the BPQ limited to the items most sensitive to change. We recommend the purpose-specific, disease-specific COPD scale for measuring change in pulmonary rehabilitation assessment in contrast to the longer 33 item questionnaire, which, however, may be more useful for cross-sectional assessment.

Notizen: Summary The effects of combinations of post-inoculation temperature (15, 25°C) and light intensity (100, 500, 1000 μEm-2s-1) on disease severity (three parameters), induced by six races of Melampsora medusae in four cultivars of Populus were assessed in a factorial experiment. While all cultivars were immune when incubated at 25°C and 1000 μEm-2s-1, most were susceptible, to varying degrees at all other temperature/light intensity combinations. Although the relative rating for disease severity of cultivar/race combinations depended to a degree on the parameter used for assessment, the temperature of incubation, irrespective of the parameter, was the most important determinant of variation in severity. All the major variables, and their two-and three-way interactions, were significant determinants of variation in number of uredinia developed per unit leaf area. The ranking of cultivars for relative resistance, and of races for relative aggressiveness, depended on the temperature/light intensity treatment during incubation. The lability to environment, of the cultivar/race reactions in this pathosystem, could contribute to stability in resistance to leaf rust in plantations of poplar.
