Notizen: Substantial improvements have been made in the sensitivity of an ac susceptibility measurement system which determines the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc(P). The pressure, P, is determined near Tc from the position of the R1 and R2 fluorescence peaks from ruby chips. The system was used to determine Tc(P) for several high Tc single crystals, but was not sufficiently sensitive to determine Tc(P) of polycrystalline samples for HgBa2CuO4+δ. This motivated us to improve the sensitivity of our system. Other parts of the system and the data analysis procedures also have been improved. As a demonstration, Tc(P) of HgBa2CuO4+δ polycrystal to 4 GPa is presented. The improvement of the system using the diamond anvil cell opens the possibility of measuring Tc above 10 GPa and on smaller samples.

Notizen: Studies of pressure induced phase transformations of ZnS nanoparticles using diamond anvil cells and synchrotron radiation were carried out to 20.0 GPa. Nanoparticles initially in the zinc-blende and wurtzite phases both transformed to the NaCl phase under the application of pressure. The zinc-blende particles, which were of 2.8 nm size, and the wurtzite particles, which were of 25.3 nm size, transformed to the NaCl phase at 19.0 and 15.0 GPa, respectively. Nanoparticles of the wurtzite phase never regained their initial wurtzite structure but returned to the zinc-blende phase upon downloading the pressure. The resultant zinc-blende nanoparticles transformed to the NaCl phase upon the reapplication of a pressure of 15.0 GPa. Nanoparticles initially in the zinc-blende phase returned to their original phase. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Electrical resistance measurements have been performed on samples of Cd1−xZnxTe (0≤x〈0.50) as a function of pressure up to 7.0 GPa. Based on a multidecade decrease in the resistance, the transition pressure of the B3 to B1 phase change is observed to increase from 3.3 to 6.7 GPa as x increases from 0 to 0.49. An anomalous drop in the resistance is observed to precede this transition; the magnitude of this drop increases with increasing x up to x=0.45, where it takes the form of a local minimum in the resistivity. The origin of this anomaly is not understood, but it is presumed to be similar to the local resistance minimum previously reported in ZnTe.

Notizen: Damage of single-crystal Si induced by 25-ns pulses from a ruby laser (694 nm) has been studied after retrieval of the samples. Macroscopic evaluation was made using optical microscopy and measurement of the surface profiles. Microscopic study techniques included Laue and topographic x-ray methods as well as x-ray rocking curves. Cleavage affected both spallation and front surface damage. Some surface fracturing takes place after the environment has cooled below the melting point of Si, while other instances seem to be controlled by the shock geometry rather than cleavage planes. The impact zone remains single crystal with narrowly oriented mosaic structure noted occasionally. Material around the impact site is polycrystalline, evidently redeposited from the plasma.

Notizen: Lattice parameters and nearest-neighbor distances have been measured for bulk grown Zn1−xFexSe (0≤x≤0.22) using standard x-ray diffraction and extended x-ray absorption fine structure techniques, respectively. The lattice parameters are in agreement with reported values for molecular beam epitaxy grown films, but differ slightly from published results for other bulk-grown samples. The nearest-neighbor distances suggest a slight distortion from the zinc-blende structure.

Notizen: An experimental system is described with which exothermic solid-state phase transformations can be made to occur isothermally and their kinetics studied in times as short as 1 s. The system has been applied to the study of the crystallization rate of metallic glasses heated to temperatures well above their glass formation temperatures. Strips of the metallic glass 0.2 cm wide and 5 cm long are resistively heated over a portion of their length to the reaction temperature. They are heated within a 0.3-cm-i.d. tube through which flows a cooling gas. The gas flow rate and electrical current are controlled so as to maintain the sample at constant temperature during the reaction. The rate of reaction is measured by monitoring the intensity of diffraction peaks from the small crystallites which form within the ribbon. The x-ray flux from a bending magnet beam line at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL) provides sufficient diffracted intensity to monitor the full development of the crystalline diffraction peaks in times as short as 1 s.

Notizen: A new method is presented of depositing zirconia-scandia films following evaporation of the oxide powders using an electron beam. The relative amount of Sc was increased in steps from 0 to 8 at. %. In the "as-deposited'' state, all films were amorphous, but crystallized following post-deposition heat treatments. As the atomic percent of Sc was increased, the tetragonal phase of zirconia was stabilized. It appeared as a single phase for compositions with more than 5 at. % Sc.

Notizen: Thin films of Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been deposited on single-crystal MgO substrates by a simple flash evaporation technique. Small pellets of the superconducting compound were formed by standard techniques, then evaporated to completion on the MgO substrates using an electron beam. The best films show an onset of superconductivity at approximately 110 K and zero resistance by 78 K. X-ray diffraction measurements show the films to be tetragonal with nominal lattice parameters of a=3.85 A(ring) and c=30.66 A(ring). The x-ray data also show the films to be highly textured with the metal-oxide planes parallel to the substrate surface.

Notizen: X-ray diffraction studies on nanometer sized lead sulfide particles reveal the presence of a compressive strain. A number of samples with particle sizes ranging from 2 to 16 nm were synthesized using the three dimensional periodic, bicontinuous cubic phase as a matrix. Samples of the larger size particles could be indexed to an fcc lattice. As the particle size decreased below 6 nm, a tetragonal distortion of the cubic lattice was observed, accompanied by a decrease in the unit cell volume. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: At elevated pressure, PbS undergoes a first order phase transition from the NaCl or B1 structure to an orthorhombic structure. The effects of particle sizes in the nanometer range on this transition have been investigated using energy-dispersive x-ray diffraction of synchrotron produced wiggler radiation. Relative to the bulk crystals, the onset of transition pressure showed a significant increase with decreasing particle size. The results also show that compressibility increases with decreasing particle size: this increase is continuous through the phase transition. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
