Notizen: A new high-frequency rheometer for measuring mechanical properties of fluids with viscosities as low as 0.5 mPa s is described. The operation is based on the torsional waveguide technique. The torsional motion is generated by a bismuth and germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 piezoelectric crystal. A specific numerical processing is developed for rapid computation of acoustic attenuation and phase retardation. Dynamic viscosity of several Newtonian liquids is determined at 98 kHz. The accuracy of acoustic measurements is better than 1%, and the resolution in terms of the Maxwell relaxation time is 2×10−8 s. The apparatus is used successfully for measuring the viscoelastic moduli G' and G‘ of polystyrene-isobutylmethylketone solutions.

Notizen: Abstract We investigate the behaviour of a liquid jet stimulated by pressure disturbances using a photometric measurement of the jet shadow width. Two apparatuses involving lights of different nature are utilized and measurements are taken from the exit of the nozzle to drop breakoff for different operating conditions. Fourier analysis is applied to characterize the spatial evolution of the jet shape. In contrast to previous studies where only amplitudes of the Fourier modes are reported, phase shifts are also recovered for low and high initial perturbations. We show that the spatial reconstruction of the jet from the temporal Fourier analysis at different abscissae is in excellent agreement with the experimental profiles

Notizen: Abstract Steady-state and transient shear stress and normal stress data were obtained for four asphalts with a modified Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. Interest was specially related to non-linear behaviour at high shear-rates. The time-temperature superposition principle was found to hold in non-linear behaviour. Moreover, steady-state and transient data could be plotted as master curves irrespective of the nature of the asphalts. In particular, the master curve of steady-state viscosity could be extended to results published in the literature. In the nonlinear region the shear stress relaxation after cessation of a steady shear rate $$\dot \gamma$$ becomes a function of $$\dot \gamma$$ t only and is related to the primary normal-stress coefficient, as predicted by the Yamamoto equation. In the shear stress growth experiment an overshoot is obtained at a constant strain close to 1.5, independent of the rate of strain.
