Notizen: [Auszug] Figure 1 shows data for the wear per unit distance, JET. for specimens of PTFE and low density polyethylene, LDPE, as a function of R obtained using a pin-on-disk machine (for experimental details see rf. 6). We observe that K is a marked function of R for PTFE but not for LDPE. Figure 2 shows the ...

Notizen: Abstract An experimental study has been carried out to ascertain the role of mechano-chemical effects in accelerated material removal from hard and brittle surfaces such as engineering ceramics. It was established that chemical effects are far more effective in material removal than the mechanical action of abrasive particles alone. Mechanical action is governed by the applied load, amount of relative slip within the contact zone, and the size of abrasive particles. Chemical effects depend mainly on the nature of additives and their ability to react with ceramic surface under contact conditions. Maximum wear rate is achieved when both mechanical action and chemical reactions take place simultaneously.

Notizen: Abstract Results of investigation into the relationship between friction in the O-ring type seal and gauge pressure at the commencement of linear motion of a shaft are presented and discussed. A number of different O-ring materials were studied and the lowest friction under dry conditions was found to be produced by a PTFE-encapsulated silicone seal. The effect of a number of lubricating fluids on friction in the seal was also studied and the results obtained are included.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of surface active additives on surface failures of silicon nitride is presented. This influence is mainly manifested in a substantial increase in the material removal rate of ground silicon nitride balls in an additive-containing slurry. Results of an experiment designed to simulate a single event taking place during grinding also point to a modifying action of the additives used.

Notizen: The results of studies into the performance of three selected engineering polymers in rolling contact are presented. Both dry and water lubrication conditions were used. The polymers were machined into a cup simulating the outer race in a rolling contact bearing. Ceramic balls were used in order to create corrosion resistant combinations of materials. Post-test studies were carried out using a scanning electron microscope. On the basis of microscopy examinations the effect of water on the morphology of contact path surfaces was assessed and the abilities of tested polymers to operate in the presence of water in a rolling contact were ranked. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: Results of an experimental study into the relationship between the wear of PMMA and the mode of loading and contact configuration are presented. It was found that the wear of PMMA under cyclic loading is significantly lower than is the wear under static loading of a magnitude equal to the mean load of the cycle. Different contact configurations, represented by the angle between the axis of the PMMA sample and the axis of the steel disc(counterface), proved to have only a minor effect on the wear of PMMA. The lowest wear rate for both static and cyclic loading was obtained for smaller angles. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: External lubrication of high-temperature thermoplastic polymers was studied experimentally. It was found that the nature of the lubrication fluid has a pronounced effect upon the behavior of the contact. It is postulated that premature failure of PEEK-lubricated contacts is caused by the migration of linear carboxylic acids into the polymer matrix at elevated temperatures, thereby producing significant plasticization. A sequence of events leading to failure is given and some rationale for it provided. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: An investigation into the wear process of five polymers tested under different contact conditions is presented. Polymer pin on metal plate and metal pin on polymer plate configurations were used. The metal pin on polymer plate configuration gave significantly lower wear rates compared to that observed for the polymer pin on metal plate configuration. The results are discussed in terms of morphology of wear debris generated.

Notizen: Results of phenomenological study into the forms of surface failure of poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) are presented. Surface failure of the polymer resulted from rolling contact fatigue produced in a model configuration consisting of a PMMA disc with nominally flat surface loaded against three steel balls able to roll free over the surface of the disc. It was found that the performance of the polymer under the test conditions used is influenced by lubricating medium and the main form of failure is of surface fatigue type. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
