Notizen: Abstract In addition to field observations and numerical models, geomagnetic induction effects can be studied by scaled analogue model experiments. We present here results of analogue model studies of the auroral electrojet with an Earth model simulating the Arctic Ocean and inland conductivity structures in northern Fennoscandia. The main elements of the analogue model used were salt water simulating the host rock, an aluminium plate corresponding to the ocean and graphite pieces producing the inland highly conducting anomalies. The electrojet was a time-harmonic line current flowing at a (simulated) height of 100 km above northern Fennoscandia. The period simulated was 9 min. The analogue model results confirmed the well-known rapid increase of the vertical field when the coast is approached from the continent. The increase of the horizontal field due to induced ocean currents was demonstrated above the ocean, as well as the essentially negligible effect of these currents on the horizontal field on the continent. The behaviour of the magnetic field is explained with a simple two-dimensional thin-sheet model. The range, or the adjustment distance, of the ocean effect inland was found to be some hundreds of kilometers, which also agrees with earlier results of the Siebert-Kertz separation of IMAGE magnetometer data. The modelled inland anomalies evidently had too large conductivities, but on the other hand, their influence decayed on scales of only some tens of kilometers. Analogue model results, thin-sheet calculations, and field observations show that the induction effect on the horizontal magnetic field Bx near the electrojet is negligible. On the other hand, the vertical component Bz is clearly affected by induced currents in the ocean. Evidence of this is the shift of the zero point of Bz 0-1° southwards from the maximum of Bx. The importance of these results are discussed, emphasizing the determination of ionospheric currents.

Notizen: In 1985 Fischer gave a simple explanation for the behaviour of the E-polarization magnetotelluric phase over a 2-D dike. This phase behaviour is a direct consequence of the rearrangement of the current flow in a 2-D structure as opposed to the flow in a simple uniform half-space. In spite of its usefulness it is shown that the simple phase rule is only qualitatively correct. For B-polarization it seemed at first that the simple phase rule would not remain valid. However, it is found that if the very different current distributions for E- and B-polarization are correctly interpreted, the simple phase rule retains its validity qualitatively. Arguments are given for the very general validity of this rule at the surface of any 2-D structure, even in the presence of complicated topography. The rule is best formulated in terms of two statements: (a) the magnetotelluric phase is a continuous function over any structure, even across outcropping resistivity contrasts; and (b) where the current is drawn to greater depths the phase will rise, and where the current is concentrated near the surface the phase will drop.

Notizen: Determination of thickness of sediments (usually of high conductivity) overlying a high-resistivity basement is one of the basic problems of electrical exploration methods. This paper proposes to determine horizontal electrical conductance on the basis of impedance calculated from electrical and magnetic fields of distant quasi-static (low-frequency) point sources. Using the proposed method, horizontal conductance of the sediments can be determined also from artificial quasi-static noise-impulses coming from sources of unknown position and intensity. The results of analogue modeling and field examples prove the potential of the proposed technique.

Notizen: A combined application of two independent direct current geoelectric methods, potential gradient mapping (PM) and magnetometric resistivity (MMR), is proposed for the investigation of high-resistivity basement structures. From a one-dimensional relation between horizontal electric and magnetic fields (due to currents originating from point electrodes placed on the surface of a two-layered half-space having a high-resistivity basement) several advantages of the combined PM-MMR method are shown for two-dimensional and three-dimensional basement structures. Three-dimensional models have been studied by analogue modeling experiments. This new mapping method embraces two parameters: the horizontal electric conductance map, derived from the ratio of the related electric and magnetic components, and the gradient map of their product. A close relation between structural forms and anomaly maps is obtained by using two orthogonal source-electrode layouts.Based on model results a two-channel measuring instrument was developed. The method and the instrument were tested near Sopron where a gradual deepening of, and faults in, the Paleozoic basement were found.

Notizen: The paper by Li and Oldenburg (1991) gives an important insight into d.c. charge accumulation problems. Nevertheless, their derivation concerning the role of the permittivity of the medium is not as straightforward as it could be. Another question, worth discussing, is the problem of double layers, which is missing from the authors’ paper.
