Notizen: This article describes the design of an easy-to-operate low-temperature atomic force microscope (AFM) that incorporates piezoresistive cantilevers. The instrument is easier to build and to operate at cryogenic temperatures than AFMs based on laser deflection schemes or interferometers because no mechanical adjustments of the instrument are necessary after a change of temperature. The effects of thermal expansion on the AFM's tip-to-sample distance are minimized by the use of a double tube scanner assembly. The design includes a simple mechanism that locks the sample holder in place as the temperature is lowered. This AFM is compact and rigid, enabling it to be used in a conventional cryogenic liquid-storage Dewar. All of the materials used in the construction of the AFM are ultra-high-vacuum compatible.

Notizen: The elastic field of a semi-infinite wedge crack and its interaction with a screw dislocation under mode III loading conditions are examined. The stress field around the wedge crack is expressed in terms of a wedge stress intensity factor. The rate of falloff of the stress field with distance from the crack tip is found to be a function of the wedge angle. The relationship between the stress intensity factors for the wedge and sharp cracks is derived and used to estimate the magnitude of stress relaxation occurring at the crack tip due to crack blunting. The crack extension force for the wedge crack is calculated and is shown to be zero. The modifications in the stress field and the local wedge stress intensity factor due to the presence of the dislocation are calculated. From the image stress on the dislocation, the condition for the emission of dislocations from the wedge crack is obtained in terms of the critical wedge stress intensity factor for dislocation generation. It is found that the emission of dislocations from the crack tip is more difficult when the crack is blunting.

Notizen: We have fabricated YBa2Cu3O7−x–SrTiO3–YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO–STO–YBCO) trilayers, in which each layer is patterned photolithographically, capping the first YBCO film with an in situ STO film. Atomic force microscopy demonstrates that the capping process dramatically improves the quality of the surface of the second layer, allowing the growth of an upper YBCO film with a substantially reduced level of low-frequency flux noise. A magnetometer with a multiturn flux transformer coupled to a dc superconducting quantum interference device achieved a magnetic field noise of 74 fT Hz−1/2 at 1 Hz, improving to 31 fT Hz−1/2 at 1 kHz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The surface topography of YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films has been studied with both atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The AFM images reveal a high density of small distinct nanoparticles, 10–50 nm across and 5–20 nm high, which do not appear in STM images of the same samples. In addition, we have shown that scanning the STM tip across the surface breaks off these particles and moves them to the edge of the scanned area, where they can later be imaged with the AFM.

Notizen: The earplugs of several baleen whale stocks exhibit seasonal growth layers which have been shown for some species to indicate the total age of the animals. A transition from early, irregular layers, to later, more regular layers can be seen in these earplugs, and this is thought to indicate the age at maturity of the whale. The earplugs of Southern Hemisphere minke whales are relatively difficult to read, particularly for the age at transition, and it has been suggested that these readings reflect no more than random allocations by the reader, rather than any real effect. Plots of average transition phase against year of birth (cohort) show a decline in the average age at transition. However, certain factors can result in a downward bias in this trend, particularly when only a short time-series is available for analysis, as was the case when this trend was first estimated some 15 yr ago. Data collected over 25 yr are now available and are reanalyzed here. A plot of mean age at transition against year of sampling for animals of similar age shows a decline, as does the conventional plot against cohort, suggesting that the decline is real. A model that simulates random allocation of the transition phase by earplug readers yields predictions that show systematic deviations from the data. In contrast, a second model that allows for a real trend in the average age at transition and that takes account of two potentially biasing effects (termed truncation and the fringe effect) fits the data well. A tendency is evident for readers to recognize a transition phase in a greater proportion of the earplugs that they read as they gain experience over time. This is taken into account in the model. This model shows a decline in the average age at transition from roughly 11 for the cohorts of the 1950s to roughly 7 for those of the 1970s. These results suggest that minke whale transition-phase readings are related to a real signal in the data and are not simply an artefact, and further that there has been a real decline in the age to which this signal corresponds.
