Notizen: Abstract This paper proposes a new experimental method of quantitative plastic deformation analysis by means of the thermoplastic effect. The incremental plastic strain distribution for a single shear specimen was obtained by using this method.

Notizen: This article presents a new structure of monopole field on the basis of the method for obtaining ideal quadrupole fields within closed boundaries to which is applied a continuously varied potential with position. Further optimum design is made according to a large number of computations of boundary potentials by using the finite element method, and three sets of structures, termed as A-1, B-1, and B-2 type, respectively, are proposed. The agreement of the results obtained by a field-plotting method with those of the analysis is satisfactory.

Notizen: [Auszug] G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) transduce signals from extracellular transmitters to the inside of the cell by activating G proteins. Mutation and overexpression of these receptors have revealed that they can reach their active state even in the absence of agonist, as a result of a natural ...

Notizen: The effect of pH on the survival of Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. michiganensis and its transmission via roots of tomato in hydroponic culture was studied in laboratory and greenhouse experiments. In a laboratory experiment, C. m. ssp. michiganensis could not survive for 24 h in nutrient solutions with a pH of 4·0 or 4·5, while 1, 14, 51 and 62% of inoculum survived at pH 5·0, 5·5, 6·0 and 6·5, respectively. When tomato plants were inoculated with C. m. ssp. michiganensis through wounds on the stems, the bacteria moved downward from the inoculation site to the roots and infectious bacteria were released from the roots into the nutrient solution. Of two pH regimes tested in greenhouse nutrient-film technique (NFT) culture, the C. m. ssp. michiganensis population was significantly lower in pH 5·0 than in pH 6·5 in most sampling data. In treatments in which C. m. ssp. michiganensis was introduced by transplanting two root-inoculated plants, significantly more plants developed canker at pH 6·5 (34 out of 48 plants) than at pH 5·0 (11 out of 48 plants). When the bacterium was introduced by transplanting two stem-inoculated plants at pH 6·5, seven out of 24 plants developed canker. The potential of pH manipulation in controlling tomato bacterial canker in hydroponic culture is discussed.

Notizen: A yellow-seeded doubled haploid (DH) line no. 2127-17, derived from a resynthesized Brassica napus L., was crossed with two black-seeded Brassica cultivars ‘Quantum’ and ‘Sprint’ of spring type. The inheritance of seed colour was investigated in the F2, and BC1 populations of the two crosses and also in the DH population derived from the F1 of the cross ‘Quantum’× no. 2127-17. Seed colour analysis was performed with the colorimeter CR-300 (Minolta, Japan) together with a visual classification system. The immediate F1 seeds of the reciprocals in the two crosses had the same colour as the self-pollinated seeds of the respective black- and yellow-seeded female parents, indicating the maternal control of seed colour. The F1 plants produced yellow-brown seeds that were darker in colour than the seeds of no. 2127-17, indicating the partial dominance of yellow seed over black. In the segregating BC1 progenies of the two crosses, the frequencies of the black- and yellow-seeded plants fit well with a 1 : 1 ratio. In the cross with ‘Quantum’, the frequencies of yellow-seeded and black-seeded plants fit with a 13 : 3 ratio in the F2 progeny, and with a 3 : 1 ratio in the DH progeny. However, a 49 : 15 segregation ratio was observed for the yellow-seeded and black-seeded plants in the F2 progeny of the cross with ‘Sprint’. It was postulated from these results that seed colour was controlled by three pairs of genes. A dominant yellow-seeded gene (Y) was identified in no. 2127-17 that had epistatic effects on the two independent dominant black-seeded genes (B and C), thereby inhibiting the biosynthesis of seed coat pigments.

Notizen: The wild-rice-derived dominant gene Xa21 conferring multi-race resistance to bacterial blight and a fused Bt gene cry1Ab/cry1Ac conferring resistance to lepidopteran insects were individually introduced into the same genetic background of an elite indica cytoplasm male sterile (CMS) restorer line ‘Minghui 63′. The line showed the desirable insect- and disease-resistant phenotypes. To maximize the effect, the two genes were also pyramided into the same recipient plant of ‘Minghui 63’ by marker-assisted selection. After being subjected to natural infestation of leaf-folders and yellow stem borers and inoculation of Xoo strain mixtures, the pyramiding line and its derived hybrids showed high levels of resistance against both insect damage and disease. Furthermore, data from field trials demonstrated that the hybrids made by crossing this pyramiding line with the CMS lines ‘Zhenshan 97A’ and ‘Maxie A’ retained a similar level of yield under conditions without chemical spray, indicating that the pyramiding genes have a yield-stabilizing effect on the recipient line and its hybrids.

Notizen: Self-incompatibility is one of the most effective approaches to utilizing heterosis in oilseed rape around the world. To evaluate the heterosis of double low self-incompatibility, the possibility of combining seed yield and oil content, and the genetic effects of parents on their hybrid progenies, a 2-year field trial using a 3 × 22 NC II mating design was conducted during the 1999-2001 growing seasons in Wuhan, China. Significant differences in seed yield per plant and seed oil content were observed among the F1 hybrids and between F1 progenies and their parents. However, the heterosis for seed yield per plant was much greater than that for seed oil content. Mid-parent heterosis and high-parent heterosis of seed yield per plant ranged from 5.50 to 64.11% and from –2.81 to 46.02%, while those of seed oil content ranged from –1.55 to 7.44% and –3.61 to 6.55%, respectively. Non-additive genetic effects were a major mechanism that accounted for the yield heterosis in addition to additive effects. In contrast, seed oil content heterosis was mainly dependent on an additive genetic effect. General combining ability (GCA) determined the stability of hybrid cultivars. In hybrid breeding, parental materials might be selected by the sum of GCAs and variances of special combining abilities (SCAs) of female and male parents for traits affected by both additive and non-additive effects, and by the sum of GCAs of two parents for traits controlled mainly by additive effects. Primary branches and their siliques were the most important yield traits.

Notizen: Through temperature-dependent conductivity measurements, we show evidence of a deep trap level in low-temperature (LT) Al0.3Ga0.7As layers with an activation energy of ∼0.96 eV. This energy is near that of EL2-like defects found previously in "normal'' epitaxial Al0.3Ga0.7As. It is also considerably larger than the 0.70 eV value typically associated with defects in LT GaAs, which may explain the observed large resistivity ((approximately-greater-than)1011 Ω cm) in LT Al0.3Ga0.7As. Current transient spectroscopy (CTS) of these samples yields a deep level activation energy of 1.01 eV, in close agreement with the value obtained from conductivity measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
