Notizen: The absorption spectrum in the 9–11 μm range of both undeformed and plastically deformed AgBr crystals and polycrystalline optical fibers was investigated by tunable laser calorimetry. The observed spectral features are discussed in terms of the crystal defect structure. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Distributed Bragg reflector Pb1−xSnxSe/Pb1−x−yEuySnxSe double heterostructure stripe geometry diode lasers were fabricated using molecular-beam epitaxy. Single-mode cw operation at about 7.8 μm was obtained for heat-sink temperatures in the range 25–75 K. the single-mode continuous tuning range was 10 cm−1. Tuning the diodes via the injection current, a range of 24 cm−1 was completely covered with single-mode emission. The reason for this wide tuning range was mode hopping to lower frequencies rather than the usual hopping to higher frequencies.

Notizen: Silver halide optical fibers were used as attenuated total reflection elements for infrared evanescent wave spectroscopy of gases in liquids. The evanescent wave absorption spectra of chlorodifluoromethane (Freon-22) and carbon dioxide gases (CO2) in water were studied and the dependence on vapor pressure of the gas and temperature was investigated. Absorption peaks were easily traced and correlated well with those in the literature. The use of the infrared (IR) fibers in the fiberoptic evanescent wave spectroscopy system bypasses the difficulty of ordinary IR spectroscopy related to the strong IR absorption of most liquid solvents, and provides a flexible, easy, and inexpensive way of determining the presence and concentration of gases in liquids to within about 5% accuracy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new fiber-optic sensor system, comprised of an IR tunable diode laser source and an unclad multimode IR fiber, is described. Design considerations, theoretical predictions, and experimental verification of the sensor performance are presented. This sensor has a relatively high sensitivity, and it will be very useful for monitoring and controlling in situ and in real time, concentrations and chemical transformations of liquids and pastes.

Notizen: Mechanical properties of mixed AgClxBr1−x (0≤x≤1) crystals and extruded polycrystalline optical fibers were investigated as a function of composition. The microhardness of as-grown crystals, annealed samples, and fiber-end faces show solid-solution hardening in agreement with the Kataoka–Yamada model [Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 16, 1119 (1977)]. The fibers have a tensile strength of 50–90 MPa with similar solid-solution strengthening. The infrared transmission of 0.9-mm-diam fibers is not reduced significantly upon bending them 90° on a 3-mm radius. Such mixed-crystal-based silver-halide fibers are suitable for many infrared optical applications.

Notizen: The elastic strain limit of polycrystalline mixed AgClxBr1−x fibers was studied. These fibers are useful as flexible infrared optical fibers, and the elastic bending regime is preferred for applications which require many bending cycles. The experimental method was based on the spring-back upon releasing a stressed material, and used specifically calculated expressions. Elastic strain limit values are in the range of 0.15%–0.4%. They depend on composition going through a maximum at around the AgCl0.5Br0.5 composition. The dependence on composition is explained by a theoretical model, which is based on a solid-solution internal stress field, and uses material constants.

Notizen: The dependence of the bulk (βb) and surface (βs) absorption coefficients of AgClxBr1−x crystals and of polycrystalline fibers at 10.6 μm on the composition (x) of the material were investigated. The bulk coefficient βb for AgBr was about 0.5×10−4 cm−1 and increased gradually with increasing molar concentration x of the Cl− ions up to 2.5×10−4 for pure AgCl crystals. Luminescence properties of these crystals as well as effects of thermal treatments on the absorption, luminescence, and conductivity were also investigated. A correlation was found between the effects of these treatments on the infrared (IR) absorption, the luminescence, and conductivity of the various samples. Experimental results indicate that the absorption of the silver halide crystals at 10.6 μm is mainly due to cation vacancies bound to dislocations. The absorption of the fibers was found to be greater than that of the crystals of the same composition. This is apparently due to defects induced by the heating under pressure, applied during the production of the fibers by extrusion, and the subsequent fast quenching to room temperature. A simple method for reduction of the IR absorption is proposed.

Notizen: This study of diffusion of Nd in AgBr is motivated by our interest in the preparation of Nd-doped AgBr crystals that show lasing effects in the near and midinfrared. The doping can be done in several ways. We propose that monitoring the infrared luminescence along the direction of diffusion of activator ions in crystals of AgBr is a sensitive and minimally invasive method of determining the diffusion coefficient, the diffusion enthalpy, and the temperature dependence of these parameters for ions of interest. We have used this technique to study the diffusion of Nd3+ in AgBr crystals. To establish the concentration range in which the luminescence method is useful, the dependence of the luminescence kinetics on the Nd-ion concentration was investigated. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient (D0=1.2×10−5 cm2/s at room temperature), and the diffusion enthalpy (H=0.51 eV) were determined. We found that high values of the diffusion coefficient and low values of the diffusion enthalpy facilitate preparation of high optical quality Nd-doped AgBr crystals. Such crystals are candidates for lasing action. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Silver halide infrared transmitting optical fibers are used in a noncontact mode to deliver and collect infrared radiation from a thin liquid sample on a highly reflecting substrate. The detected signal is a sensitive measure of the absorption spectrum of the liquid under study. Optimal placement of the fibers with respect to the sample was calculated and experimentally confirmed. The system provides a quantitative infrared spectrum with minimal sample preparation.

Notizen: Decomposition of Au metallopolymer thin films induced by a scanning cw Ar+ laser leads to metallic features that, under a broad range of experimental conditions, exhibit marked periodic structure. Preliminary mechanistic studies point to a thermal decomposition pathway in which the heat released in the exothermic reaction drives the reaction front ahead of the laser-irradiated area. The spatial period is determined by laser power, scan speed, and film thickness. We argue that this mechanism is analogous to laser-initiated explosive phenomena observed in the recrystallization of amorphous semiconductors.
