    Notizen: Abstract A numerical model of fine-grained sediment dispersion in the New York Bight of the North American continental shelf is presented. Large amounts of waste material have been dumped in this region and the dispersal patterns of this material are of great interest to environmental managers. The model assumes that fine sediment resuspension is determined by surface wave activity and that transport is determined by tidal currents. Considering surface wave activity to be a random process reduces sediment motion to a random walk which is governed by a diffusion equation. The diffusion equation is solved numerically by an implicit time difference, finite element algorithm for a number of initial conditions. Initial conditions corresponding to ocean dumping sites show patterns of dispersal controlled by the geometry of the study region and the anisotropy of the tides. Material dumped at currently used dump sites reaches sensitive coastal areas before it leaves the continental shelf. Examination of the diffusion coefficients suggests an alternative dump site for fine-grained material. This dump site is relatively near sources of dumped material but produces minimal impact on coastal areas. This site should be considered as a possible alternative to expensive direct disposal at deep ocean sites.

    Notizen: Corporate governance crisis and reform is essentially cyclical. Waves of corporate governance reform and increased regulation occur during periods of recession, corporate collapse and re-examination of the viability of regulatory systems. During long periods of expansion, active interest in the conformance aspects of governance diminishes, as companies and shareholders become again more concerned with the generation of wealth, rather than in ensuring governance mechanisms are working appropriately for the retention of wealth, and its use for agreed purposes. This cyclical historical saga revolves around the enduring agency and stewardship dilemmas of governance. Complacency concerning corporate governance during confident times compounds ensuing crises. Such dilemmas are universal in market systems, though internationally with different systems of corporate governance the unwinding of this saga has occurred at different times, for different reasons, and with different consequences. Corporate governance is about wealth generation and risk management, and these duties require continuous and simultaneous performance. Avoiding mandatory restrictive over-regulation requires active market regulation, particularly at times of expansion. The drive to make corporate governance both improve corporate performance and enhance corporate accountability will continue.

Digital networks provide access to vast amounts of data and information but knowledge management tools and systems are required to translate this in a meaningful way. Knowledge management initiatives are unlikely to be successful unless they are integrated with business strategy, and related to the development of the core capabilities of the organisation. Sharing the discovery and synthesis of intellectual activity involves the creation of knowledge communities of practice. There is much evidence of commercially inspired corporate initiatives in this direction across all industrial sectors: leveraging existing intellectual capital; sharing best practice across multiple locations; data mining to build customer relationships; and creating knowledge networks to allow state–of–the–art solutions in professional services.

    Notizen: Abstract: In vivo microdialysis in guinea pig hypothalamus was used to study the effect of serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] subtype 1D autoreceptor blockade on the increase in extracellular 5-HT levels produced by a selective 5-HT reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Administration of the selective 5-HT1D antagonist GR127935 at 0.3 mg/kg had no effect, but 5 mg/kg significantly increased extracellular levels of 5-HT and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid to 135% of basal values. Moreover, at these doses GR127935 significantly attenuated the decrease in extracellular 5-HT levels following local perfusion with the selective 5-HT1D agonist CP-135,807. The SSRI sertraline at 2 mg/kg increased 5-HT levels to 130% of basal levels. The combination of this low dose of sertraline with either dose of GR127935 resulted in a pronounced, long-lasting increase in 5-HT levels to 230% of basal values. These results indicate that the effects of an SSRI on terminal 5-HT are significantly enhanced by coadministration of a 5-HT1D antagonist and confirm that in addition to somatodendritic 5-HT1A autoreceptors, terminal 5-HT1D autoreceptors mitigate the effect of SSRIs on terminal 5-HT. As such, antagonists of the 5-HT1D autoreceptor could be useful as rapidly acting antidepressants and may shorten the onset of antidepressant action when combined with SSRIs.
