Notizen: Effects of neutralization on butadiene-methacrylic acid copolymers have been studied. In Hycar CTB with 2% acid groups, small-angle x-ray scattering gives evidence of some cation clustering and leads to a value of the mean radius of 5.6 Å for the clusters and a value of the distance between them of 70 Å. When the concentration of salt is increased there is no appreciable change in the distance between clusters or in their size, but their number increases. The structure of clusters has been studied by electron paramagnetic resonance in copolymers neutralized with copper salts. The appearance of a line as in the monohydrated acetate salt permits one to define the structure of clusters consisting of two Cu2+ and four RCOO- ions with two H2O or RCOOH molecules. When the temperature is increased, the signal corresponding to Cu2+-Cu2+ pairs disappears. In high molecular weight butadiene methacrylic acid copolymers with 9% acid groups, we have found the ion pair clusters gathered into larger clusters. In dynamic mechanical properties, a relaxation peak appears at 340°K. We interpret this as due to breaking and possible re-forming of dipolar associations.

Notizen: The physical structure of Nafion membranes has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). Samples in the acid form may exhibit two scattering peaks. The first, observed by SANS at an angle corresponding to a Bragg spacing of 180 Å, is shown to arise from structures in crystalline regions. A second peak at larger scattering angles is shown to arise from ion-containing regions which may be swollen with water. Salt-form samples made by soaking the acid form in an aqueous salt solution can also exhibit the same two scattering signals. But in amorphous salt-form samples produced by quenching from the melt the first peak is absent. This permits a more accurate study of the second peak by SAXS, which shows that the second scattering component is present as a maximum over a wide range of water contents but is absent in a sample dried at 200°C. The position of the peak shifts to lower scattering angles (or larger spacings) at higher water contents. Possible structural models that might give rise to the maximum are discussed. A calculation of the SAX invariant is made and results are consistent with a phase separation of a large fraction of the water.

Notizen: The telechelic polybutadiene-methacrylic acid copolymer (Hycar CTB) containing 2 mole percent acid and neutralized (5-100%) by alkali ions, Na+, K+, and Cs+, has been studied by small-angle x-ray scattering. Salt groups form clusters, and the average value of the radii of gyration is approximately 8 Å; this value seems to be independent of the nature of the cation and the degree of neutralization. The existence of a low-angle maximum in the scattering intensity gives evidence of a mean distance of 80 Å between clusters in the fully neutralized sample. This distance increases slightly with a decreasing degree of neutralization. A more precise analysis of the small-angle scattering curve gives further information on the cluster structure: the ionic groups may form small bilayer disks while the polymer chains maintain a regular distance of 80 Å between the disks.
