    Notizen: There is evidence that exopolysaccharides (EPS) contribute to the persistence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis lung. However, the relationship between the chemical composition of EPS and the modulation of phagocytic cells is poorly understood. In order to evaluate the role of the chemical composition of EPS in macrophage behavior changes, we pretreated macrophages with characterized EPS and assessed P. aeruginosa phagocytosis and reactive oxygen intermediate (ROI) production. The results showed that alginate and neutral polysaccharides are involved in phagocytic impairment of P. aeruginosa. Moreover, alginates were able to prime macrophages for increased P. aeruginosa-induced macrophage oxidative burst as determined by chemiluminescence. In contrast, neutral polysaccharides are responsible for the decrease of ROI by a scavenging effect evaluated by the xanthine–xanthine oxidase system. This study showed that the content of P. aeruginosa EPS in alginate, but also in neutral polysaccharides, influences the behavior of strains towards phagocytosis and macrophage oxidative burst.

    Notizen: Abstract We report single crystal magnetoresistivity measurements of the organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 in magnetic fields applied perpendicularly to the superconducting planes. We present an analysis of the behavior of the resistivity in the vortex liquid phase. It turns out, that at high temperatures and sufficiently low fields the vortex liquid phase can be described as a very viscous vortex liquid of 3D vortices with activation energies arising from generations of vortex-doublekinks. Quantitatively a value of the superconducting anisotropy parameter γ = ξab/ξc ≈ 80 can be derived from the measurements presented here.

    Notizen: Abstract The quasi-2D organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 presents properties in the superconducting state which are similar to most anisotropic high-Tc compounds. The smaller upper critical fields (≃100kOe) enable us to study the entire (H, T) phase diagram by electrical transport measurements: large superconducting fluctuations lead to a broadening of the normal-superconducting transition as well as to the presence of a phase transition line between a solid and a viscous liquid phase. In low magnetic fields, the displacement of the vortices in the liquid phase is due to the creation of double kinks in the flux lines.

    Notizen: Abstract  The performance of a commercially available assay for detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody in saliva samples was assessed. Samples of saliva were collected from 270 individuals whose HCV antibody status was determined by serum assay (161 HCV-positive, 109 HCV-negative). The saliva samples were tested for the presence of HCV antibodies using a modified protocol. The sensitivity was 94.4% (95% CI, 89.3–97.2%) and the specificity 99.1% (95% CI, 94.3–100%). Although the optical density in tests on HIV-positive individuals was lower than that among HIV-negative individuals, the HIV status had no significant influence on the results of the HCV assay in saliva. These findings suggest that tests on saliva can be useful in epidemiological studies for estimating the prevalence of HCV in populations that are difficult to reach.
