    Notizen: Oxygen permeation characteristics of whey protein isolate (WPI) coatings on polypropylene (PP) films were investigated to examine the feasibility of WPI coating as a novel biopolymer oxygen barrier for food packaging applications. Heat-denatured aqueous solutions of WPI with several plasticizers including glycerol, sorbitol, sucrose, propylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol were applied on the surfaces of PP films previously treated with corona discharge. Among plasticizers used, sucrose conferred the best oxygen barrier property to the WPI-coated films. Oxygen permeability (OP) of the resulting WPI-coated films increased significantly with temperature, showing very good agreement with the Arrhenius model. OP of the coated films also increased exponentially with relative humidity.

    Notizen: Inactivation kinetics of Lactobacillus plantarum by high pressure CO2 was investigated to understand the mechanism of microbial inactivation. The inactivation rates increased with pressure, temperature and exposure time, and with decreasing pH of media. Microbial inactivation was governed essentially by penetration of CO2 into cells and its effectiveness could be improved by the enhanced transfer rate. Microbial reduction of 8 log cycles was observed within 120 min under CO2 pressure of 70 kg/cm2 at 30°C. We hypothesized that the cell death resulted from the lowered intracellular pH and damage to the cell membrane due to penetration of CO2. Pressurized CO2 treatment is a potential nonthermal technology for food preservation.

    Notizen: Abstract. An alternating copolymer composed of 9,9′-dihexylfluorene and N-2-ethylhexyl carbazole was synthesized to use as an emissive polymer in a light-emitting diode (LED). The copolymer is soluble in organic solvents and spin-cast to make a fine film. An LED fabricated by sandwiching the alternating copolymer between indium-tin oxide and aluminum emits a white color with the full width at half maximum of 150 nm. The electroluminescence spectrum becomes simplified to have an emission peak at 460 nm for fine blue color when the copolymer is blended with poly(vinylcarbazole) with a ratio of 1 to 4 before the use as an emissive layer. The forward bias turn-on voltage for the LED is 13, and quantum efficiency is 0.002%.

    Notizen: Abstract The microstructural and mechanical stability of Cu-6 wt. % Ag alloy obtained by cold rolling combined with intermediate heat treatments have been investigated. The stress-strain responses and fracture behavior of Cu-6 wt. % Ag alloy were examined and correlated with the microstructural change caused by thermo-mechanical treatments. The deformation bands stabilized by silver precipitates were observed in heavily rolled Cu-6 wt. % Ag alloy. The highly deformed microstructure stabilized by silver filament was observed to be unstable at temperatures above 200 °C. The strength of Cu-6wt.%Ag alloys were found to decrease remarkably if they were heat-treated above 300°C. The fracture surfaces of Cu-Ag two phase alloys showed typical ductile type fracture. The electrical conductivity did not change appreciably up to the aging temperature of 200°C and increased rapidly at temperatures above 300°C. The increase of the conductivity and the decrease of the strength can be associated with the microstructural coarsening of heavily deformed linear band structure. The difference of the UTS and the conductivity between the rolling direction and the direction perpendicular to the rolling direction (on the rolling plane) were found to be relatively small.

    Notizen: Abstract The flow stress of a 1060 Al/Al2O3 composite increases rapidly with strain rate due to the higher dislocation accumulation rate and the increasing strength of dislocation barriers. The Al/Al2O3 interfaces were found to be well bonded even after high-rate deformation of the composite. MgAl2O4 particles observed at Al/Al2O3 interfaces in the composite of the present study are thought to improve the interface strength. Unlike in pure aluminium, a well-developed cell structure was not observed in the deformed 1060 Al/Al2O3 composite. The absence of a well-developed cell structure is thought to result from a more homogeneous slip distribution in the composite.
