Notizen: We discuss the nature and role of (corporate) governance and (shareholder) value and their implications for (sustainable) economic performance. We critique and build on extant theory to develop a model of the determinants of value-wealth creation at the firm, national and global levels and explore current economic debates on governance and sustainable economic performance in its context. We conclude that (the need for) stakeholder value is derivative from (not opposed to) the concept of sustainable value, that national governance and the nationwide “governance-mix” impact on corporate governance and that national and global economic governance are essential for sustainable global value-wealth creation, and economic performance.

Notizen: Two major advances in the theory of the firm and (micro)economics more generally are arguably transaction costs economics (TCE) and the theory of firm resources. TCE has originally been applied to the theory of the firm, but found applications in virtually all fields of economic inquiry. The theory of firm resources currently spans much of the industrial organisation (IO) and strategic management literature. In some fields, e.g. diversification, it has already acquired dominant status. Despite significant progress in TCE there still seem to remain significant unresolved issues. Indeed we claim that transaction cost economics fail to supply convincing answers to the issues of the nature of the firm (why do firms exist?), and their essence (running a business). It offers a partial explanation of the "nature" and little on the "essence". The resource value view complements the nature side and goes far beyond on the essence issue. It provides a fruitful starting point for an integrative framework. This, we suggest, should be based on the resource value perspective story and craft (dynamic) transaction costs in the ensuing evolutionary tale.

Notizen: Aims to examine the issue of industrial strategy (IS), paying particularattention to the case of Britain. Sets out to assess the possibility andnature of an industrial strategy for Britain, in Europe, and within theglobal scene, taking into account the world we live in as we see it.Accordingly, the perspective is driven and shaped by a quest for arealistic, feasible and sustainable industrial strategy. In order toachieve these objectives, first examines the theoretical argumentsbehind much of British, and more generally, Western industrial policies.Following this, outlines and assesses British industrial policypost-Second World War then compares and contrasts British industrialpolicy with that of Europe, the USA, Japan and the newly industrializedcountries. Then examines recent developments in economics andmanagement which may explain the "Far Eastern" miracle, and points to thepossibility of a successful, narrowly self-interested, IS for Europe andBritain, based on the lessons from (new) theory and internationalexperience. To assess what is possible, develops a theoretical frameworklinking firms in their roles as consumers and/or electors. This hintsat the possibilities and limits of feasible policies. All these ignoredesirability which, in the author's view, should be seen in terms ofdistributional considerations, themselves contributors tosustainability. Accordingly, discusses a desirable industrial strategyfor Britain in Europe which accounts for distributional considerations, and goes on to examine its implications for the issue of North-Southconvergence. Concludes by pointing to the limitations of the analysisand to directions for developments.

Notizen: Despite long-standing debates on deindustrialisation and the importance of manufacturing, as well as tests of the deindustrialisation hypothesis, little empirical work exists on the impact of manufacturing on competitiveness, where manufacturing is the independent variable. To address this first presents a conceptual framework that links manufacturing to competitiveness and deindustrialisation and tests it for a case of serious apparent deindustrialisation and "relative decline", that of Greece, in the context of a novel "simultaneous equation model" that tests both for deindustrialisation and "manufacturing matters". Finds that the change in manufacturing shares have a positive and significant impact on competitiveness measured by per capita income, confirming that "manufacturing matters".

Notizen: Economics has an impoverished view of virtuous human behaviour in general, and corporate social responsibility in particular. We claim that this is due to a particular, albeit currently dominant approach to economics. This approach focuses on the pursuit of wealth through efficient allocation of scarce resources by ‘rational’ utility-maximizing economic agents and institutions, such as markets, firms and states, in the exclusive pursuit of ‘efficiency’. This results in an ethic-free and often inimical approach to virtuous behaviour. However, a different approach to economics, which focuses on sustainable global resource creation and allocation, asserts virtuous responsible behaviour to be part and parcel of economic analysis and performance.
