    Notizen: We consider the problem of nonlinear noise reduction within the framework of Bayesian Theory. This enables us to place appropriate weights on the measurement and dynamic errors and thereby avoid over cleaning the data. Using a Metropolis–Hastings sampler, we are able to achieve robust noise reduction without the introduction of ad hoc parameters but at the expense of higher computational complexity. Such an algorithm should also allow us to explore the potential and limitations of other noise reduction methods. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The existence of spatially chaotic deformations in an elastica and the analogous motions of a free spinning rigid body, an extension of the problem originally examined by Kirchhoff are investigated. It is shown that a spatially periodic variation in cross sectional area of the elastica results in spatially complex deformation patterns. The governing equations for the elastica were numerically integrated and Poincaré maps were created for a number of different initial conditions. In addition, three dimensional computer images of the twisted elastica were generated to illustrate periodic, quasiperiodic, and stochastic deformation patterns in space. These pictures clearly show the existence of spatially chaotic deformations with stunning complexity. This finding is relevant to a wide variety of fields in which coiled structures are important, from the modeling of DNA chains to video and audio tape dynamics to the design of deployable space structures.

    Notizen: Abstract: Resection of liver metastases is accepted as an appropriate treatment for colorectal metastases in suitable patients. Liver transplant is not often used for malignant disease as there is a high incidence of undetectable micrometastases elsewhere and recurrence is likely. The effects of immunosuppression may also enhance the growth of malignant cells at other sites. We report a case where a young patient with undiagnosed breast cancer with axillary and liver metastases underwent liver transplantation and is effectively leading a normal life 33 months after transplant.

    Notizen: Abstract: Synaptosomes and synaptoneurosomes were prepared from rat cerebral cortex. Comparison of the amino acid levels in the two types of organelles and of the effects of gabaculine thereon indicated that the neurosome portion of synaptoneurosomes constituted the major influencing component of the organelles. Administration to rats of inhibitors of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) degradation, such as gabaculine and L-cycloserine, resulted in elevated GABA levels in synaptoneurosomes and a decrease in muscimol-stimulated C1 uptake by the organelles. Addition of gabaculine directly to the incubation medium for the uptake assay had no effect on the C1 transport. In contrast, administration to rats of isonicotinic acid hydrazide, an inhibitor of GABA synthesis, decreased the GABA level in synaptoneurosomes and increased the muscimol-stimulated Cl− uptake by the organelles. Although the evidence is not unequivocal, it does support the concept of GABA released from nerve endings being taken up by the postsynaptic cell, from where it exerts a regulatory influence on the functioning of the GABA receptor/ion channel complex.

    Notizen: Two experiments were carried out to evaluate propionic acid-treated hay as a feed for sheep in which eighteen ewes (experiment 1) and eighteen ewe lambs (experiment 2) were fed ad libitum on hay only. At feeding, the propionic acid-treated hays had higher D-values and water-soluble carbohydrate concentrations, but a lower dry matter concentration, than the untreated hays. The voluntary feed intake and liveweight gain of the sheep fed on two acid-treated hays and on an untreated hay in experiment 1 were similar. In the second experiment an acid-treated moist hay was eaten in greater amounts by the sheep and liveweight gains were greater than on the corresponding untreated hay, but were not significantly different from those of sheep fed on field-cured hay.

    Notizen: Storage losses in moist hay treated with propionic acid were compared with those occurring in untreated moist hay in two experiments and with field-cured hay in three experiments. Dry matter losses in treated hays ranged from 41 to 8.6% and from 1.7 to 12.6% in untreated hays. Digestible organic matter losses in both treated and untreated hays were generally greater than dry matter losses. Only in one experiment did propionic acid application significantly reduce nutrient losses in moist hays.Nutrient losses, and water-soluble carbohydrate losses in particular, were shown to be correlated with maximum and cumulative bale temperatures during storage in two of the experiments. The rise in hale temperatures during storage was reduced in all three experiments, to a greater or lesser extent, by application of the additive.Loss of propionic acid from the hay during and after application was very large. In the three experiments 86.2, 85.3 and 85.6% of the acid applied was lost by the end of the storage period. Acid distribution studies indicated that variation in acid concentration within bales was as great as between bales. It was concluded that more research is needed into applicator design and position on the baler and into alternative application methods if the benefits of propionic acid as a moist hay preservative are to be fully exploited.
