    Notizen: Highly porous vitrified bonded grinding wheels were produced by selective extraction of butyl carbamate pore inducer using supercritical (sc) CO2. Butyl carbamate was found to be an excellent pore inducer, as the extraction was fast and the desired pore structure was obtained. The investigation revealed that the extraction was controlled by the solubility of butyl carbamate in scCO2 and the flow direction had a large effect on extraction times. The solubility of butyl carbamate determined from cloud point measurements was found to be high at moderate conditions. Grinding tests demonstrated that scCO2 pore-induced wheels performed slightly better then conventionally produced wheels at the conditions investigated. The power required for grinding, wheel wear, and part quality were comparable with those of conventionally produced wheels at low metal removal rates. However, the extracted wheels outperformed the conventional wheel at high metal removal rates, indicating the scCO2 processing produces a slightly superior product than that made by conventional means. Liquefaction of the pore inducer during extraction had a minor effect on the final properties of the wheel.

    Notizen: The desorption profiles of various organics from soil and activated carbon using dense liquid and supercritical carbon dioxide were modeled. The model accounts for effective diffusion of the organics in the solid pores, axial dispersion in the fluid phase, and external mass transfer to the fluid phase from the particle surface. This model, involving partial differential equations, is solved using the orthogonal collocation on finite elements. The model is able to predict the experimental data quite well without any adjustable parameters. The importance of each parameter depended on the system, although adsorption equilibrium and the effective pore diffusion of the organic were the most significant parameters in all the systems investigated.

    Notizen: The catalytic total oxidation of toluene and tetrahydronaphthalene (tetralin) in super-critical carbon dioxide over a 0.5% platinum γ -alumina catalyst was studied in a fixed-bed reactor. Toluene oxidation experiments were performed at 618, 633, 648 and 663 K, and at 7.93, 9.31 and 10.7 MPa. Tetralin oxidation experiments were performed at 573, 598, 623 and 648 K and at 8.96and 10.0 MPa Inlet concentrations of toluene and tetralin were varied in the ranges 569 to 2,858 ppm (mass/mass) and 1,420 to 3,648 ppm, respectively. Reactions were run at excess oxygen with a 25:1 molar ratio of oxygen to toluene and a 15:1 molar ratio of oxygen to tetralin. A stepwise mechanism was postulated for the oxidation reaction to describe the kinetics of toluence and tetralin oxidation in supercritical carbon dioxide, and the reaction orders and activation energies were determined.

    Notizen: The infinite dilution diffusion coefficients of methane, ethane, n-propane, n-pentane, n-heptane, n-decane, n-dodecane, and n-tetradecane have been measured in n-octane using the Taylor dispersion technique in the temperature range 304-435 K at 1.72 × 106 N/m2. Using the framework of the rough hard sphere theory, the values of the translation-rotational coupling parameter have been determined for each solute-solvent pair at each temperature. The coupling parameter was found to be independent of temperature over the entire temperature range of the experiments performed and it has the same value for solutes ranging from n-pentane to n-tetradecane. A calculation scheme is presented for accurate determination of infinite dilution diffusion coefficients for a wide range of solutes in n-octane at a wide temperature range.
