Notizen: Organizational web sites have become a primary source of information for job seekers. To date, no research has attempted to determine which aspects of organizational web sites most influence job-seeker attraction to an organization. The current paper reports the results of two studies that examined how perceptions of organizational web site content (compensation, organizational culture, and training opportunities) and style (aesthetics and usability) influence organizational attraction. The present findings demonstrate that both the content and style of organizational web sites are important precursors of organizational attraction. These findings are discussed both in terms of their practical implications for designing effective recruitment web sites and their implications for future empirical work on organizational recruitment activities.

Notizen: Researchers have recently drawn attention to performance elements that extend beyond task performance (often labeled as organizational citizenship behavior, or OCB). A second stream of research concerns detrimental, potentially destructive acts that hurt colleagues or organizations (labeled counterproductive work behavior, or CWB). Spector and Fox (in press) have proposed a model based upon conceptual parallels that may help connect these two disparate fields of research, using positive and negative emotions as intermediary variables between environmental conditions and extra-role work behaviors. The current study tested portions of the overall model, and found reasonable support for the components. Suggestions for further research designed to test the overall model are presented.

Notizen: In the functional mental disorders, where conjointly definitive pathophysiology and etiology are unknown or nonexistent, a disease entity is specified syndromically, by the statistical relations of signs, symptoms, traits, tests, and other data. The very concept of co-morbidity becomes problematic, and its application to individual patients is difficult. Coherent cut kinetics, the taxometric method composed of multiple procedures (e.g., MAMBAC, MAXCOV, MAXSLOPE, MAXEIC, L-Mode) developed by Meehl and colleagues is a partial objective solution. The importance of the INKS condition, a concept from philosophy of science, is explained. Four situations of putative comorbidity are defined with explanations of how taxometric results would distinguish them.

Notizen: In April of 1998, the World Trade Organization pronounced the US Sea Turtle Conservation Act in violation of the GATT. This paper presents a stylized Heckscher–Ohlin–Samuelson model in which the fatal entrapment of sea turtles in nets of the shrimping industry is a negative externality that reduces global utility. Three trade equilibria are simulated: free trade, trade ban, and free trade with subsidization. With free trade, a transfer of abatement capital from the North to the South results in a Pareto improvement upon the trade ban. The simulations indicate that a cooperative outcome which obtains global efficiency may be feasible but is improbable.

Notizen: Bilateral trade flows are examined to investigate whether trade patterns are consistent with a simple model of trade in differentiated products. In contrast to previous results in the literature, it is shown that the simple model of trade in differentiated products is often not appropriate for trade among the poor nations. Demand differences among the poor countries are shown to be at least a partial explanation for the deviations from the theoretical predictions.

Notizen: : The flood hydroclimatology of the Grand Forks flood of April 1997, the most costly flood on a per capita basis for a major metropolitan area in United States history, is analyzed in terms of the natural processes that control spring snowmelt flooding in the region. The geomorphological characteristics of the basin are reviewed, and an integrated assessment of the hydroclimatological conditions during the winter of 1996 to 1997 is presented to gain a real-world understanding of the physical basis of this catastrophic flood event. The Grand Forks flood resulted from the principal flood-producing factors occurring at either historic or extreme levels, or at levels conducive to severe flooding. Above normal fall precipitation increased the fall soil moisture storage and reduced the spring soil moisture storage potential. A concrete frost layer developed that effectively reduced the soil infiltration capacity to zero. Record snowfall totals and snow cover depths occurred across the basin because of the unusual persistence of a blocking high circulation pattern throughout the winter. A severe, late spring blizzard delayed the snowmelt season and replenished the snow cover to record levels for early April. This blizzard was followed by a sudden transition to an extreme late season thaw due to the abrupt breakdown of the blocking circulation pattern. The presence of river ice contributed to backwater effects and affected the timing of tributary inflows to the main stem of the Red River. Only the absence of spring rains prevented an even more catastrophic flood disaster from taking place. This paper contributes to our understanding of the flood hydroclimatology of catastrophic flood events in an unusual flood hazard region that possesses relatively flat terrain, a north-flowing river, and an annual peak discharge time series dominated by spring snowmelt floods.

Notizen: Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are small pinnipeds that are widely distributed throughout the temperate coastal regions of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. We determined birth mass, neonatal growth rates, weaning age, and weaning mass of NE Pacific harbor seals (P. v. richardsi) during a capture-recapture study that spanned the nursing period (Sidney Island, British Columbia, Canada). Of 46 harbor seal pups initially captured, 28 were classified as newborns (i. e., 〈 24 h old). Mean body mass of newborns was 11.2 ± SE 0.31 kg. Pups were individually tagged and recaptured throughout the nursing period. Average daily mass gain during the nursing period was 394 ± 26 g. Mean birth mass of males did not differ significantly from females, although pups found with fetal pelage (lanugo) (21.4% of all newborns) were smaller at birth (9.8 ± 0.44 kg) than non-lanugo pups (11.6 ± 0.33 kg). Mean weaning mass was estimated at 23.6 ± 1.2 kg at a mean weaning age of 32 d ± 1.5 d. While birth and weaning masses differed little from the published data for offshore Sable Island harbor seals (P. v. concolor), British Columbia harbor seals are characterized by half the daily mass gain and a longer nursing period.

Notizen: Feces were collected from six Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) that consumed known amounts of Atka mackerel (Pleurogrammus monopterygius), Pacific herring (Clupea barengus), pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), and squid (Loligo opalacens). The goal was to determine the numbers and types of taxon-specific hard parts that pass through the digestive tract and to develop correction factors for certain abundantly occurring structures. Over 20,000 fish and squid were consumed during 267 d of fecal collection. During this period, over 119,000 taxon-specific hard parts, representing 56 different structures, were recovered. Skeletal structures and non-skeletal structures accounted for 72% and 28% of all hard parts, respectively. The branchiocranium, axial skeleton, and dermocranium regions of the skeletal system accounted for the greatest number of hard parts recovered. Over 70% of all recovered hard parts were represented by one to six taxa specific structures for each prey type. The average number of hard parts (3.1–31.2) and structure types (2.0–17.7) recovered per individual prey varied across taxa and were used to derive correction factors (to reconstruct original prey numbers). A measure of the variability of hard part recovery among sea lions showed no difference for certain herring, pollock, and squid structures, however, there was a significant difference for salmon and Atka mackerel structures. Identifying all taxon- specific prey hard parts increases the likelihood of identifying and estimating the number of prey consumed.

Notizen: 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) is a commonly used cosolvent in experimental studies of peptides and proteins. Although concentration-dependent TFE effects have been well studied experimentally, the exact mechanism by which TFE affects the solubility and stability of peptides is still unclear. Here we report molecular dynamics simulations of TFE/water mixtures of different composition in an attempt to improve our atomic level understanding of the properties of TFE/water mixtures. The trends in most properties—densities, diffusion constants, dielectric constants, and enthalpies of mixing—were well reproduced, although quantitative agreement with experiment was poor. Other thermodynamic properties of the solutions—partial molar volumes, derivatives of activity coefficients, and isothermal compressibilities—were also determined using the Kirkwood–Buff theory of mixtures. The Kirkwood–Buff analysis indicated significant aggregation of TFE molecules in the mixtures, especially at low mole fractions, in agreement with experiment. However, the aggregation of TFE molecules was exaggerated using the current TFE and water models. The results suggest that the combination of simulation data and Kirkwood–Buff theory provides a powerful tool for the investigation of the thermodynamic properties of hydrogen bonding mixtures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An expression for the nonadditive first-order exchange contribution in terms of the one- and two-particle density matrices of the isolated monomers is given. This formula is used to derive the intramonomer correlation contribution to the first-order exchange nonadditivity with the density matrices of the isolated monomers computed at the second-order Møller–Plesset level. As an illustrative example of the theory the trimer Ar2–HF is considered. It is shown that the correlation contribution is far from negligible, not only in relation to the corresponding first-order uncorrelated exchange, but also in comparison to the other three-body terms. Moreover, it is fairly anisotropic, so that it cannot be neglected in accurate calculations of nonadditive effects. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
