Notes: Excessive distortion, warpage, and sagging resulting from heat generation by electrical components and transporting environments has limited the penetration of PVC into high flow injection molding applications such as business machine, appliance, and electrical housings. High flow PVC formulations lose their rigidity at temperatures typical of these applications because the application temperatures are very close to the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVC. In addition, thermal stresses built in during processing relax near the Tg of the material. Adding a glutarimide acrylic copolymer increases the Tg of PVC; consequently, raising the temperature at which the PVC/glutarimide copolymer blend loses its rigidity well above required application temperatures. This paper describes the effect of adding a glutarimide copolymer on the heat distortion properties and other physical and rheological properties important to high flow injection molding applications.

Notes: Moisture can be absorbed from the air by PVC plastisols and by the fused product. Water in plastisols can contribute to defects in films, sheet goods and foam products, usually in the form of depressions or craters. Water absorbed by thermoformable foam PVC sheets can result in defects in the molded product, often appearing as wrinkles. Correlation between the sum of the water absorbed by individual PVC plastisol components and the water absorbed by a fused thermoformable foam sheet suggests that moisture sensitivity of the product can be minimized by selecting plasticizers and PVC resins having low moisture absorption.

Notes: Maintenance of physical properties after thermal aging is becoming more and more important for vinyl as the polymer makes further inroads into engineered applications. Many OEMs and regulatory agencies are now requiring that polymers used in business machine, appliance, and consumer electronic applications maintain both tensile and impact properties for long periods of time at high temperatures. The choice of impact modifier and other formulation ingredients appears critical to developing a successful compound that will maintain both tensile and impact properties after thermal aging. In this paper, we discuss the effects of different impact modifier types and other formulation variables on property retention.

Notes: Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compound use is growing in specialty injection molding applications such as appliances, business equipment, and electrical enclosures. A key factor in determining the appearance and physical properties of the molded parts is the processability of the PVC compounds, which can be improved through the use of acrylic processing aids. Processing aids promote PVC fusion, modify the melt rheology, and/or provide lubrication. Some processing aid products are designed to serve one of these functions while others provide a combination of functions. Each of these functions and its major benefits in rigid PVC injection molding are described. Some guidelines for selecting appropriate processing aid products for applications are provided.
