Notizen: Abstract The role of gravity in the autolysis of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was studied by growing cells on Earth and in microgravity on Space Station Mir. Autolysis analysis was completed by examining the death phase or exponential decay of cells for approximately 4 months following the stationary phase. Consistent with published findings, the stationary-phase cell population was 170% and 90% higher in flight B. subtilis and E. coli cultures, respectively, than in ground cultures. Although both flight autolysis curves began at higher cell densities than control curves, the rate of autolysis in flight cultures was identical to that of their respective ground control rates.

Notizen: Abstract Previous investigations have reported that bacterial suspension cultures grow to higher stationary concentrations in space flight than on Earth; however, none of these investigations included extensive ground controls under varied inertial conditions. This study includes extensive controls and cell-growth data taken at several times during lag phase, log phase, and stationary phase of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The Marquardt-Levenberg, least-squares fitting algorithm was used to calculate kinetic growth parameters from the logistic bacterial growth equations for space-flight and control growth curves. Space-flight cultures grew to higher stationary-phase concentrations and had shorter lag-phase durations. Also, evidence was found for increased exponential growth rate in space.

Notizen: Abstract The repeated administration of amphetamine (AMPH) results in a pattern of behavioral changes which includes an augmentation of some behaviors, generally referred to as behavioral sensitization. Some investigators have suggested that an increased dopamine (DA) response to AMPH challenge may underlie behavioral sensitization, while others have reported behavioral sensitization in the absence of an enhanced DA response. Because temporal and dosage parameters of the AMPH pretreatment regimen have been suggested to play a role in the appearance of an enhanced DA response, we utilized a variety of AMPH pretreatment regimens to assess the relationship between pretreatment dose of AMPH, duration of withdrawal and the DA response in caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens to a subsequent AMPH challenge. Under our experimental conditions, behavioral sensitization was observed after each of these treatments in the absence of an enhanced DA response in either brain region.

Notizen: Abstract The use of CO and O2 chemisorption to titrate surface sites on β-Mo2C was examined using cumene (isopropylbenzene) hydrogenation as a test reaction. The tests were carried out using β-Mo2C samples prepared at two different temperatures so as to deposit different amounts of pyrolytic carbon on their surfaces. Synthesis at 961 K produced a surface that was substantially free of pyrolytic carbon (90% clean), while synthesis at 981 K produced a surface that was contaminated with carbon (25% clean). It was found that O2 uptakes were about six times higher than CO uptakes, but both gave consistent turnover rates for the reaction.

Notizen: A focused Cs+ beam was used to obtain secondary ion mass spectra and images from samples of stearic acid on gold before and after ablation by a beam of masive cluster ions. Ablation appears to have two effects on secondary ion emission. First, the number and intensity of peaks reflecting contamination are substantially reduced. Secondly, the absolute intensity of secondary ion current characteristic of the analyte increases. These features simplify mass spectra and improve contrast in the images obtained.
