    Notes: Abstract The transient temperature fields and dynamic thermal stress fields in gun barrel are studied in this paper, which are problems of interior ballistics. The high blast temperature and pressure act simultaneously on the inner surface of the barrel behind projectile moving in the barrel during shooting. Under this boundary condition, the governing equations of the thermoelastic problems of hollow cylinder are given, the corresponding functional is studied and the numerical results calculated by the finite element method are obtained.

    Notes: Summary Prostaglandins and other eicosanoids have been studied extensively in their physical, biochemical, biophysical and pharmacological aspects. However, studies on their role in tumor progression, especially metastases are relatively recent. Following a brief overview of the history of discovery and metabolism of eicosanoids and other fatty acids, we discuss the functions of these fatty acids (with emphasis on prostacyclin, thromboxane A2, 12-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid and 13-hydroxyoctadecadienoic acid) in cell transformation, tumor promotion and particularly in tumor cell metastasis. The relation between these monohydroxy fatty acids and tumor cell metastasis is discussed from three different perspectives, i.e., their effects on tumor cells, on platelets and on endothelial cells. The mechanism of these effects are then addressed at cell adhesion molecule, motility, protease, cell cytoskeleton, protein kinase and eicosanoid receptor levels. Finally, regulation of three key enzymes which generate eicosanoids (phospholipase, prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase and lipoxygenase) is explored.

    Notes: The thermal oxidative stability of photocrosslinked high density polyethylene was studied. The relative effectiveness of various antioxidants (hindered phenols and amines, aromatic amine, organic sulfides, and phosphites) was examined by comparing the oxidation induction time (OIT) which was measured using differential scanning calorimetry. Hindered phenol antioxidants were found to be most effective. At an antioxidant concentration of 0.20 wt % which gave an OIT value of 20 min at 200°C, the photocrosslinking rate was decreased only to a limited extent as evidenced by a small drop in gel content. However, the efficiency of the antioxidants as stabilizers decreased to a considerable extent after the photocrosslinking process. Serious surface deterioration was found which was ascribed to depletion of antioxidant at the surface mainly due to high rate of oxidation and evaporation.

    Notes: Electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometry (ESI-IMS), a technique which has only recently become analytically useful, has been evaluated for use as a detector for microbore liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis. Figures of merit for ESI-IMS were determined. Detection limits as low as 1 × 10-15 mol s-1 were measured, with a linear response range of 3 to 4 orders of magnitude and with reproducibility within 3% (relative standard deviation of peak area). Gradient elution with water/methanol mobile phase did not perturb chromatographic baseline, compound response, or product ion mobility. Both positive and negative ion mobility spectra for more than 30 compounds demonstrated the sensitivity of ESI-IMS response to a wide range of analytes. Finally, the concept of using ESI-IMS as an ionization source for gasphase samples was presented, potentially unifying detector application for both gas and liquid chromatography.

    Notes: Ultra high strength polyethylene (HSPE) fibers have been successfully photocrosslinked using benzophenone as photoinitiator. The introduction of photoinitiator without disturbing the fiber structure is a difficult problem which was solved by vapor absorption at elevated temperature while keeping the fiber under constant strain. The crosslinked fiber showed no decrease in mechanical properties at room temperature as is the case when fibers are crosslinked by other reported methods such as radiation and chemical crosslinking. The crosslinked fiber showed enhanced high temperature resistance as well as much lower creep rate on prolonged stressing. Photocrosslinking of HSPE fiber is superior to other crosslinking methods reported in the literature.

    Notes: Three kinds of polyurethane (PU) and vinyl ester resin interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) have been synthesized to study their morphologies and mechanical properties for the potential application in the reinforced reactive injection molding process. For the PU prepared from uretonimine modified pure MDI, the macrophase separation of the IPNs between the rubber and plastic phases was found by DSC measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, whereas the interpenetration between the two networks was also observed on SEM photos at least around the area of interface. However, for the IPN systems including PU prepared from TDI or graft polyol, which was synthesized by using macromer technique, the compatibility between the two phases is excellent. The mechanical properties of these IPNs were measured and could be correlated well enough with their morphologies. The IPN prepared with graft polyol exhibited the best mechanical properties over all IPN specimens studied in this work. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Summary Metastasizing cancer cells can invade the extracellular matrix using plasma membrane protrusions, termed invadopodia, that contact and dissolve the matrix. Various membrane associated proteases localized on the invadopodial membranes are responsible for the extracellular matrix degradation. Work from our laboratory shows that secreted proteases including Gelatinase A, and high molecular weight integral membrane proteases are associated with cell surface invadopodia. Three cell types, including chicken embryonic cells transformed by Rous sarcoma virus, human malignant melanoma cell line LOX, and human breast carcinoma cell line MDA-MB-231, retain the invasive phenotypein vitro, express invadopodia, degrade and enter into a fibronectin-rich collagenous matrix. We suggest that invadopodium-associated proteases are ideal targets for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer as their presence in association with primary tumors may signal increased metastatic potential. An approach toward the development of new prognostic markers for breast malignancy involved production of monoclonal antibodies directed against membrane proteases in a mixture of glycoproteins. Double immunofluorescent technique using a known invadopodium marker is designed to select specific monoclonal antibodies colocalizing at the invasion front, on invadopodia of cancer cells. Membrane protease accessibility at the cell surface can therefore be exploited for therapeutic advances by the development of specific antibodies and inhibitors that block their activities, and by the use of monoclonal antibodies to target cytotoxic molecules to micrometastases. Also, this same accessibility may potentially be used to detect surface proteases on micrometastases or to detect components shed by micrometastases in serum.

    Notes: Purified, lipid-free rhodopsin has been incorporated into bilayers of natural and synthetic phosphatidyl cholines and a natural digalactosyl diglyceride. Successful incorporation and high regenerability of rhodopsin appears to depend on the nature of the hydrocarbon chains and not specifically on the type of polar head group of the lipids.Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of recombinant membranes containing small amounts of spin labeled phosphatidyl cholines reveals that rhodopsin interacts directly with the hydrocarbon chains of the phospholipids in the bilayer, resulting in a dramatically decreased motional freedom of the chains.In studies of the recombinant membranes using freeze-fracture electron microscopy, the presence of rhodopsin is detected as discrete particles in the plane of fracture. The particle distribution is dependent on the nature of the lipid hydrocarbon chains and whether or not the rhodopsin has been photolyzed.From these studies, it is concluded that the rhodopsin-bilayer structure is stabilized primarily by direct interaction of the hydrocarbon chains with the protein molecule, and that structural parameters in this model system are subject to modulation by visible light.
