    Notes: Abstract This paper presents transient analyses for a Markovian loss system with heterogeneous inputs. Results are applied to the analysis of the measured time congestion of this system. Transient analyses show the properties of system recovery and covariance functions. The measured time congestion is analyzed and approximations are proposed using these properties. These results are significant for management and control in the Integrated Services Digital Network.

    Notes: Abstract The amount of heavy metals discharged from daily life was estimated in order to know the origin of the metals contained in the sewage sludge which is produced in the wastewater treatment plant treating only domestic wastewater. The amounts of the metals discharged from our daily life were estimated to be in the range of 0.2 to 0.3 for Cd, 1.6 to 1.9 for Ni, 3.5 to 6.8 for Pb, 0.8 to 1.4 for Cr, 8.2 to 19.3 for Mn 9.4 to 55.8 for Cu, 44.3 to 62.7 for Zn and 111 to 293 for Fe in mg.d−1 per person, Using these data, the cycle of the metals in our daily life was discussed in relation to land application of sewage sludge.

    Notes: Abstract A young woman presented with high fever and edema in January, 1984, and was diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus. Prednisolone administration failed to improve her symptoms. In May she was admitted to hospital because of elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), hypoproteinemia, hypogammaglobulinemia, hypocomplementemia, positive antinuclear antibody, elevated immune complex level, and diarrhea. Edema disappeared following administration of diuretics and albumin, although the pathogenesis was still undetermined. In September, she was referred to our institution because of severe watery diarrhea and hypoproteinemia. Endoscopic examination showed a diffuse inflammatory lesion in the duodenum and the colon. Radioisotopic51Cr-albumin study results were compatible with protein-losing enteropathy. Hypoproteinemia and inflammatory changes of the intestine were improved by antibiotics, suggesting that the inflammatory lesion was caused by bacterial infection. Despite the improvements in clinical symptoms and laboratory findings, the serum IgA level was still low and the thrombocytopenia remained. The morphological characteristics of the megakaryocytes were consistent with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. In May, 1986, the thrombocytopenia deteriorated, causing purpura. Prednisolone was administered again, and this resulted in normalization of the platelet count, although the IgA level remained low. Finally the prednisolone was stopped, and the IgA level gradually recovered, with the improvement of the enterocolitis. The exact pathogenesis of the whole picture in this case is unclear, but an 8-year-long clinical course suggests that the protein-losing was caused by an infectious enterocolitis superimposed on IgA deficiency.

    Notes: The androgen-dependent clonal cell line SC-3, derived from Shionogi carcinoma 115, secretes a fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-autocrine growth factor in response to androgen, which is able to bind to FGF receptors. In SC-3 cells, FGF receptor expression is upregulated by the SC-3-derived growth factor, providing a means of amplifying an autocrine loop of cell growth. In the present investigations, the effect of the polysulfonated naphthylurea suramin on this autocrine loop and its amplification in SC-3 cells were studied. Suramin inhibited androgen-dependent growth of SC-3 cells in a concentration-dependent fashion: ∼50% inhibition was observed at 25 μM. [3H]Thymidine incorporation into the cells stimulated with partially purified SC-3-derived growth factor was inhibited by suramin in a similar way. Additionally, suramin inhibited acidic (a) or basic (b) FGF-induced cell proliferation, though relatively high concentrations were necessary to achieve the maximal inhibition. Pretreatment of SC-3 cells with suramin decreased cell surface 125I-bFGF binding without altering dissociation constant (Kd) of the binding sites. When the cells were incubated with 250 μM suramin for 24 h, the maximum binding (Bmax) decreased to almost 50% of the control. Treatment with suramin also decreased the levels of FGF receptor-1 mRNA to a similar extent, whereas it appeared not to affect the levels of β-actin mRNA. Moreover, suramin completely blocked androgen- or bFGF-induced accumulation of FGF receptor-1 mRNA. The inhibitory effects of suramin on FGF receptor expression were reversed by simultaneous addition of high concentrations of bFGF. These results indicate that suramin exerts its potent antiproliferative action on SC-3 cells through inhibition of an androgen-inducible autocrine loop involving SC-3-derived growth factor and FGF receptor. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

    Notes: The 1025 cm-1 band which occurs in the SERS of pyridine and halide anion was investigated in detail on a silver electrode in neutral and acidic solution. The 1025 cm-1 band was observed to increase in intensity when the silver electrode was treated with the ORC procedure in the presence of pyridine and halide and the concentration of pyridine was then diluted in neutral solution. On the other hand a band began to appear strongly at 1025 cm-1 when the solution was acidified with HCl after the ORC. It was confirmed that the 1025 cm-1 band appearing on dilution in neutral solution has by the same origin as the 1025 cm-1 band which appeared on acidification. The behaviour of the band can be understood if it is assumed that the species giving rise to the 1025 cm-1 band is a silver-pyridine-halide complex generated by the electrode reaction during the ORC.
