    Notes: Abstract Diurnal changes in net photosynthetic rate (PN), evapotranspiration rate (ET) and water use efficiency (WUE=PN/ET) of field grown chickpea (Cicer arietinum) L. cv. H-355 were studied from the vegetative phase through maturirty at Haryana Agricultural University Farm, Hissar, India. The maximum photosynthetic rate (PN max) increased from the initial vegetative phase to pod formation and declined at a rapid rate from pod filling to maturity. The response of PN to photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) (400–700 nm) was temperature-dependent during the day, i.e. on cool days the PN rates were lower for certain quanta of PPFD during the first half than during the second half of day, and vice versa on warm days. ET was affected both by crop cover and evaporative demand up to flowering, but thereafter it was independent of crop cover and followed the course of evaporative demand. ET was related to air temperature during the day while PN was related to PPFD. There was a lag of two to three hours between PNmax (around noon) and ETmax (around 2 p.m.). WUE increased from the vegetative stage through flowering but decreased thereafter to maturity.

    Notes: Summary Inoculation of water fernAzolla pinnata R. Brown (Bangkok isolate) at the rate of 500kg fresh weight ha−1 in rice fields at weekly intervals after planting in addition to 30 kg N ha−1 as urea showed a decrease in its growth and N2-fixation with delay in application. Use of Azolla up to 3 weeks after planting (WAP) during wet and 4 WAP during dry season produced significantly more grain yield than 30 kg N ha−1, whereas its application upto one WAP produced more grain yield than 60 kg N ha−1. Grain yield with Azolla applied at the time of planting was similar to that of 60 kg N treatment during the wet season. Higher grain yields in zero and one WAP Azolla treatments resulted due to increase in both number of panicles m−2 and number of grains/panicle while the subsequent Azolla inoculations increased grain yield mainly by producing more number of grains/panicle. Dry matter and total N yields at maturity of rice crop were more with Azolla application upto 3 WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season while the reduction in sterility (%) was observed upto one WAP over 30 kg N ha−1 during both seasons. Number of tillers m−2 and dry matter production at maximum tillering and flowering were more than 30 kg N ha−1 with the use of Azolla upto one WAP. Increased grain N yield was observed with the use of Azolla upto 4 WAP during two seasons whereas straw N yield increased upto one WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season.

    Notes: Abstract Barium ferrite has been prepared by a novel non-conventional preparation method known as the “liquid mix” technique which involves the preparation of citrates of the metals concerned. The decomposition of the citrates indicated a gradual transition from an amorphous material to a crystalline phase leading to the formation of barium ferrite at 600° C as indicated by the X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer measurements. Submicrometre-sized particles of the ferrite could be obtained directly on decomposition of the citrates, thus avoiding the milling or grinding operations normally employed to reduce the particles to the size required for obtaining good magnetic properties. The best properties (coercivity and remanence) were obtained for the ferrite sintered around 990° C.

    Notes: Abstract Proton transfer and condensation reactions followed by dissociative electron recombination and charge transfer processes may yield a significant concentration of PO in interstellar clouds. Relevant terrestrial PO lines in the ultraviolet, infrared and microwave regions are listed in order to aid the detection of PO in interstellar clouds. Within the framework of Klein-Dunham potential, spontaneous emission rates and oscillator strengths of strong (Δv=0 sequence) beta bands of the PO molecule are estimated. For SgrB2 source, under optically thin case, each of the two strongest2π1/2,J=2.5−1.5 rotational transitions (108.998 GHz and 109.206 GHz) of PO would have antenna temperature less than 125 mk for beam efficiency∼0.6 and μ=0.7D (electric dipole moment of PO in thev″=0 level of theX 2 π state). For Orion molecular cloud, PO (4, 4.5, 5-3, 3.5, 4) (e, f) lines are excitable at 196.305 and 196.500 GHz and each line would have antenna temperature less than 110 mK.

    Notes: A study was carried out to characterize the microstructure and distribution of some mechanical properties in reinforced reaction injection molding panels (RRIM). The panels were prepared under a variety of processing conditions. Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared analysis were employed for microstructure characterization. The following mechanical tests were carried out: dynamic mechanical, tensile, and impact. The results indicate significant relationships between processing conditions, microstructure, and mechanical properties. In particular, the skin/core structure of the panels and the size distribution of bubbles in the matrix have an important effect on the impact properties. Furthermore, the balance between the distributions of cure and crystallinity, which is difficult to define clearly, plays an important role in determining panel behavior.
