    Notes: Summary The incidence of end-stage renal disease was determined in the Pima Indians of the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, a population with a high prevalence of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Between 1975 and 1986, from a study population of 5059 subjects, end-stage renal disease occurred in 80 persons, 76 (95%) of whom had Type 2 diabetes. A review of the cases with end-stage renal disease indicated that among the diabetic subjects only two cases could be attributed to nondiabetic renal disease; all other cases were attributable to diabetic nephropathy. In diabetic Pima Indians the incidence rate of end-stage renal disease did not change during the study period, was similar in men and women, and was not effected by age at diagnosis of diabetes or by attained age, but did increase significantly with hypertension (p〈0.05). The incidence of end-stage renal disease attributed to diabetic nephropathy increased from 0 cases/1000 person-years at 0–5 years to 40.8 cases/1000 person-years at ≥ 20 years duration of diabetes. In these subjects with Type 2 diabetes, the incidence rate of end-stage renal disease was similar to that in subjects with Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who were followed at the Joslin Clinic in Boston, Massachusetts when those with similar duration of diabetes were compared.

    Notes: Summary The prevalence of abnormal urinary albumin excretion, defined by a urine albumin to creatinine ratio〉-30 mg/g (approximately equivalent to an albumin excretion rate of 〉-30 mg/24 h), was determined in 2728 Pima Indians aged 〉-15 years from the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, a population with a high prevalence of Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Excessive albumin excretion was present in 8% of subjects with normal glucose tolerance, 15% of those with impaired glucose tolerance, and 47% of subjects with diabetes. The intermediate prevalence of abnormal albuminuria in those with impaired glucose tolerance suggests that hyperglycaemia even at levels below those diagnostic of diabetes is associated with renal abnormalities in some subjects and that these abnormalities may precede the onset of diabetes. Abnormal albuminuria at levels not reliably detected by the usual dipstick methods was commonly observed in Pima Indians with diabetes, even those with diabetes of recent onset. Associations were found with age, duration of diabetes, level of glycaemia, blood pressure, and treatment with insulin.

    Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the use of a seven-hole probe on measurements of leading edge vortices of highly sweep delta wing planforms. Intrusive probe data taken with the pressure probe were compared with non-intrusive measurements made with laser Doppler anemometry system. In addition to probe size, the natural position of breakdown and the sweep angle of the wing are also factors in determining sensitivity of the flow to probe interference. At low angles of attack vortex breakdown does not occur in the vincinity of the model and the seven hole probe was found to yield reasonably accurate measurements. When the angle of attack of the model was increased so that vortex breakdown was near the trailing edge, introducing the probe over the wing would cause the breakdown position to move ahead of the probe. However, when breakdown naturally occurred ahead of the mid-chord of the wing the vortices were found to be less sensitive to a probe placed behind the breakdown point. Vortex breakdown on a lower swept wing is found to be more sensitive to interference. Near the breakdown region, seven hole probe measurement is less accurate due to a combination of probe interference and flow reversal.

    Notes: Abstract A theory is developed for determining the motion of an observer given the motion field over a full 360 degree image sphere. The method is based on the fact that for an observer translating without rotation, the projected circular motion field about any equator can be divided into disjoint semicircles of clockwise and counterclockwise flow, and on the observation that the effects of rotation decouple around the three equators defining the three principal axes of rotation. Since the effect of rotation is geometrical, the three rotational parameters can be determined independently by searching, in each case, for a rotational value for which the derotated equatorial motion field can be partitioned into 180 degree arcs of clockwise and counterclockwise flow. The direction of translation is also obtained from this analysis. This search is two dimensional in the motion parameters, and can be performed relatively efficiently. Because information is correlated over large distances, the method can be considered a pattern recognition rather than a numerical algorithm. The algorithm is shown to be robust and relatively insensitive to noise and to missing data. Both theoretical and empirical studies of the error sensitivity are presented. The theoretical analysis shows that for white noise of bounded magnitude M, the expected errors is at worst linearly proportional to M. Empirical tests demonstrate negligible error for perturbations of up to 20% in the input, and errors of less than 20% for perturbations of up to 200%.

    Notes: Abstract Levees and floodwalls are used extensively throughout the United States for flood control. Levee projects often lack ecological, recreational, and aesthetic values, except for incidental fish and wildlife benefits derived from borrow pits and recreational facilities found in some urban settings. In recent years increased environmental concern within construction agencies and greater responsiveness to public opinion have resulted in increasing numbers of levee projects designed, built, and maintained with environmental objectives in mind. This paper reviews environmental concepts successfully employed on levee projects constructed in recent years by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Some of the most innovative concepts are described and illustrated and design considerations are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The operation of Trinity and Lewiston Dams on the Trinity River in northern California in the United States, combined with severe watershed erosion, has jeopardized the existence of prime salmonid fisheries. Extreme streamflow depletion and stream sedimentation below Lewiston have resulted in heavy accumulation of coarse sediment on riffle gravel and filling of streambed pools, causing the destruction of spawning, nursery, and overwintering habitat for prized chinook salmon (Salmo gairdnerii) and steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus tschawytscha). Proposals to restore and maintain the degraded habitat include controlled one-time remedial peak flows or annual maintenance peak flows designed to flush the spawning gravel and scour the banks, deltas, and pools. The criteria for effective channel restoration or maintenance by streambed flushing and scouring are examined here, as well as the mechanics involved. The liabilities of releasing mammoth scouring-flushing flows approximating the magnitude that preceded reservoir construction make this option unviable. The resulting damage to fish habitat established under the postproject streamflow regime, as well as damage to human settlements in the floodplain, would be unacceptable, as would the opportunity costs to hydroelectric and irrigation water users. The technical feasibility of annual maintenance flushing flows depends upon associated mechanical and structural measures, particularly instream maintenance dredging of deep pools and construction of a sediment control dam on a tributary where watershed erosion is extreme. The cost effectiveness of a sediment dam with a limited useful economic life, combined with perpetual maintenance dredging, is questionable.

    Notes: Abstract Many of the environmental problems associated with channel modifications can be anticipated if known fluvial relationships are considered early in the planning process. Plan modifications or corrective measures can be employed to prevent environmental degradation and improve project performance. The fluvial system is reviewed from a geomorphic perspective. Functional fluvial relationships are described and their use in planning and design of flood channels is demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract To determine whether the autonomic nervous system has a direct effect on GIP secretion, six normal subjects received a 4-hr intraduodenal perfusion of glucose (225 mg/min) and polyethylene glycol on four successive days. During the latter 2 hr, either normal saline, propranolol, phentolamine, or atropine were infused intravenously. Glucose absorption was calculated by measuring glucose and polyethylene glycol following luminal aspiration distal to the perfusion site. Basal and peak or nadir values in the saline study of plasma glucose, insulin, glucagon, and GIP were similar to the other three studies prior to autonomic blockade. During the latter 2 hr of the glucose perfusion, the plasma glucose and glucagon responses to saline did not differ from responses to the three blocking agents. Phentolamine but not atropine or propranolol resulted in a greater insulin response compared to saline (3247±762 vs 1348±388 μU/ml/120 min,P〈0.01). GIP was not significantly affected by phentolamine (18,146±4574), propranolol (7585±5854), or atropine (15,797±6297) compared to saline (11,717±5204 pg/ml/120 min). Glucose absorption was unaffected by infusions of saline, phentolamine, and propranolol, but was increased following atropine infusion (5841±1120 vs 1044±808 mg/120 min,P〈0.02). There appears to be no direct effect of the autonomic nervous system on glucose-induced secretion of GIP.

    Notes: Summary Choong's (1963) data for isothermal sorption of water vapor by wood are used to compute pressures, chemical potentials, and entropies of water in the wood specimens of his nonisothermal mass equilibrium experiments. Entropies of both the bound water and water vapor were reasonably constant. A balance existed between thermal diffusion and mass diffusion, as indicated by gradients in temperature and chemical potential. This balance also is suggested by opposing gradients in spreading pressure and vapor pressure. Equal chemical potentials showed that the vapor and bound water were in equilibrium. The model proposed by Siau (1980) for nonisothermal diffusion is consistent with these results. Expressions are given for the two unknown parameters in this model: moisture conductivity and heat of transfer. The constant entropy of water vapor is used to show that the heat of transfer exceeds the activation energy for bound water diffusion by about 25 percent.
