Notes: Pea samples were collected after various unit operations in a commercial cannery and the vitamin C losses at these points were investigated. Blanching and retorting accounted for the major losses. A substantial amount of vitamin C in peas leached into the brine. Approximately two-thirds of the original vitamin C in fresh peas was lost during processing. Shelled peas were also blanched in steam, water, and in an agitated water system under laboratory conditions. Vitamin C retention in water-blanched peas appeared to be independent of agitation rate, indicating that diffusion may be the controlling mechanism. The diffusivity of vitamin C in peas at 85°C was estimated to be 1.4 × 10−4 cm2/sec.

Notes: Abstract A stochastic analysis of a nonlinear selection model is presented. The model, based on Eigen and Schuster's theory of selection and evolution of biological macromolecules, considers the effects of fluctuations on the individual concentrations of macromolecules as well as the total population numbers in constrained systems. Our analysis shows that one of the models most often treated deterministically (referred to as constant organization in the literature) becomes unstable when fluctuations in the total population number are considered. An alternative model which apparently has built in self-regulating properties is analyzed and proves to be stable except for some special cases of degeneracy.

Notes: Abstract The technique of the probability generating function is used to derive the stochastic differential equations for a nonlinear model based on Eigen and Schuster's theory of biomolecular selection and evolution. The stabilities of various steady states are analyzed by using the linear stability approximation. The instability of a small starting population is investigated numerically. The minimum starting populations required for steady-state survival are then estimated for a wide range of parameters.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a numerical analysis which relates the sulphur content of structural steel and hydrogen induced cracking in welded-joints. Transient hydrogen concentration and hydrostatic pressure at the joint were calculated based on a mathematical model. The study indicates that, to reduce the possibility of cracking, both hydrogen and sulphur contents should preferrably be kept minimal. If considerably high hydrogen input of electrodes (greater than 15 cc/100 gm dep. metal) is unavoidable, then materials with sulphur content less than 0.010% should not be used.
