Notes: Seventy B-cell alloantisera were tested by microcytotoxicity against a panel of B-cell-enriched and T-cell-enriched lymphocytes. Six groups were discerned and have tentatively been designated DIg 1–7 (for Duke immunoglobulin-positive cell groups). These alloantisera were used to type an HLA-A/B recombinant family. Two groups were observed to segregate in this family, DIg 7 with the HLA-B locus and DIg 2 with the HLA-A locus.

Notes: A series of synthetic germination stimulants for the plant parasites Striga and Orobanche has been prepared. These compounds, analogues of the natural Striga germination stimulant, strigol (I), (Cook et al., 1966, 1972) cause signiticant germination of Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. seed at concentrations as low as 10−9 M, and an even greater activity against species of Orobanche has been demonstrated. Initial outdoor box trials of the compounds against Striga asiatica (L.) O. Ktze. in Hyderabad, India, have shown a reduction of up to 65% of the seed after a single treatment of the soil 6 weeks before the planting of the sorghum host.

Notes: In vitro exposure of mouse thymocytes to complexes of polyadenylic:polyuridylic acid (poly A:U) effected, within 6 h, the release of soluble factor(s) capable of nonspecifically enhancing IgM and IgG plaque-forming cells (PFCs) in in vitro primary and secondary spleen cell responses to burro erythrocytes. Poly A:U stimulation was, most likely, polyclonal, since production of soluble factor(s) occurred in the absence of antigen and in serum-free culture media. Poly A:U-induced soluble factor(s) were not capable of substituting for T cells but were dependent on T cells for the expression of PFC enhancement. These data support the hypothesis that the mechanism of poly A:U's adjuvant action is polyclonal stimulation of T cells, causing early induction and release of nonspecific, soluble PFC-enhancing factor(s).

Notes: : In a joint undertaking by The MITRE Corporation and the EPA Office of Water Programs Operations, three indices were developed: (1) An index of water quality; (2) An index of the need for abatement action; and (3) An index of the need for water quality management planning. These indices were evaluated for some 1000 planning areas (sub basins, regional planning jurisdictions, metropolitan areas, etc.) which together cover essentially all of the area of the 48 contiguous states.

This book not only describes essential statistical techniques but gives a welcome priority to elementary numerical methods. The author aims to ...

Notes: Summary A clinical and radiological study in 50 children with symptomatic mobile flat feet treated with varying combinations of shoes, custom-made arch supports, and pads over a period of four years is presented. It was concluded that children with symptomatic mobile flat feet should be fitted initially with laced high top shoes containing a steel shank and firm counter. A custom-made navicular pad should be added if adequate symptomatic relief is not obtained from the recommended shoes. Navicular cookies were found to be ineffective.
