Notes: ABSTRACT Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) denotes a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting upper and lower motor neurons. ALS4 is a juvenile-onset, autosomal dominant form of ALS that is characterized by slow progression, distal limb weakness and amyotrophy, and pyramidal signs associated with severe loss of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. The ALS4 locus was recently mapped by linkage analysis to a large genetic interval on chromosome 9q34. By undertaking extensive genetic linkage analysis, we have significantly refined the ALS4 locus to a critical interval of less than 3 cM, flanked by D9S149 and D9S1198. Previous physical mapping in this region has indicated that this critical interval spans approximately 500 kb. Seventeen putative transcripts have been localized within this interval including 7 characterized genes, 2 partially characterized genes, and 8 "anonymous" expressed sequence tags . These are therefore positional candidate genes for the ALS4 locus. We have also undertaken mutation analysis and genetic mapping to investigate and exclude candidate genes, including RING3L/ORFX and RALGDS , from a pathogenic role in ALS4.

Notes: Abstract  Acidification is the most common water quality problem in lakes created from previous open cast lignite mines. Aeration of aquifers and dump materials from mining activities causes pyrite oxidation. Pyrite oxidation products are stored in pore water, minerals and at the exchange complexes of the aquifers and dump sediments. Rainfall runoff transports sediments on the dump slope into the lakes. Elutriation of these sediments whithin the lakes releases either acid-producing or acid-neutralizing agents. At a test site south of Leipzig, the annual erosion rates were quantified by water erosion models (RUSLE, EROSION 2D, PEPP) and field measurements. They ranged from 300 up to 900 tons per hectare. Hydrogen ion equivalent release or binding at the sediment elutriation was computed from laboratory analysis of the pore-water quality, ion exchange complex and mineral composition of the sediment. Two of the three investigated sediments contained 3 mmol (eq) acidity per 100 g dry sediment and revealed saturation with respect to jarosite, jurbanite and gypsum. In the third sediment, 6 mmol (eq) alkalinity per 100 g dry sediment was obtained. The annual net acidity influx was calculated to be about 0.5 million mol (eq) for the lake of the test site.

Notes: Summary The mean annual population density of nematodes in the litter and upper 6 cm of soil was found to be 368,000 m-2. Mean individual live weight biomass approximated 0.2 μg and mean biomass was calculated to be 74.6 mg live weight m-2. No evidence of seasonal vertical migration between the litter, 0–3 cm and 3–6 cm strata was found and on average these strata contained 21.9, 46.2 and 31.9% respectively of the total number of nematodes recovered. The equivalent biomass values were 26.14, 56.57, and 17.29%. Total numbers revealed a general picture of low densities in spring and high ones in early winter, whereas biomass m-2 was low in late summer — autumn and high in winter. The annual oxygen consumption of the extracted nematodes was calculated to approximate 0.211 m-2 (≈4.0 kJ m-2) but when corrected for the effect of individual biomass (weight specific oxygen uptake) was equivalent to an energy expenditure ≈6.0 kJ m-2 which in its turn, because of the efficiencies of extraction, probably accounts for only 87% of the total energy expenditure by the nematode fauna. The nematodes were estimated to be responsible for a minimum of 0.11% to a maximum of 0.13% of the total “soil” respiration. A production/biomass ratio of 5.16 was estimated as was a net population production efficiency of 36.63%.

Notes: Abstract A new superposed rule of Mroz's kinematic hardening rule and Ziegler's kinematic hardening rule based on two-surface model is proposed in the paper. Some experimental results on ratchetting of 2014-T6 aluminum alloy are predicted very well under multiaxial loading. In addition the conformability of the model is discussed for transient cyclic hardening under two kinds of nonproportional cyclic loading paths, i.e. square and rhombic path.

Notes: In the characterisation of latices conductometry is the technique most commonly used. In this paper it is shown that a thorough characterisation of latices is possible based mainly on potentiometric titrations in aqueous and non-aqueous media and on spectrophotometry. Results obtained with these techniques in the study of acrylate latices prepared with nonylphenolpolyethyleneoxidesulphate as the emulsifier are presented. It is shown that this type of emulsifier is subjected to considerable hydrolysis during the emulsion polymerisation process.
