Notes: Abstract A new time integrated method for the study of resonant nuclear scattering of synchrotron radiation in the forward direction or in Bragg directions is introduced. This method gives in principle similar information as the well known time differential method. A brief comparison of both methods is presented. The idea is to excite coherently the nuclei incorporated in two absorbers, one moving with respect to the other. The fields radiated by the nuclei from both absorbers interfere and each time the nuclear energy in one absorber matches, by Doppler modulation, the nuclear energy of the other, an extremum in the time integrated intensity is observed. The results of the first experiments at the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory will be presented.

Notes: Abstract This article reports on experimental developments and first results for Mössbauer isotopes other than 57Fe. We will restrict ourselves to basic features of the resonances of 169Tm, 119Sn, 83Kr, 181Ta, and 151Eu and want to point out remarkable differences in instrumentation – like monochromator design – compared with 57Fe. Some applications can be found in other sections of this issue.

Notes: Abstract The principles behind the design and operation of polarization‐based optics for nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation are discussed. With perfect single crystals and collimated X‐rays emitted from undulator‐based third‐generation synchrotron radiation sources, polarization‐selective optics with a sensitivity of parts per billion can be obtained. A general approach to optical activity is introduced, and the polarization dependence of the index of refraction is calculated for nuclear forward scattering for a medium with unidirectional symmetry. Some recent experimental results are reviewed and future applications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Multilayer structures form a particular class of samples employed in nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation. Their specific properties lead to unusual energy and time characteristics of nuclear resonant scattering, which differ much from those of single crystals. The analysis of these distinctions is presented. Several approaches to achieve pure nuclear reflections with multilayers are discussed. Finally, we review the studies of multilayer structures with nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation.

Notes: Abstract Incoherent nuclear resonant absorption of synchrotron radiation at the 14.413 keV nuclear resonance of 57Fe was employed to measure directly the Fe-projected (partial) phonon density of states (DOS) in epitaxial FeCr(0 0 1) superlattices and in an 57Fe0.03Cr0.97(0 0 1) alloy film MBE-grown on MgO(0 0 1). The measurements were performed at 300 K with 2.3 meV energy resolution around 14.413 keV. At the interfaces, longitudinal vibrations of Fe atoms are suppressed, and a strong resonance phonon mode appears near 23 meV.

Notes: Abstract The beat pattern produced by nuclear resonant scattering of synchrotron radiation scattered from two stainless steel foils in constant relative motion has been measured at 3-ID beamline at the Advanced Photon Source. Contrary to theoretical prediction and different from the result in glassy material, the scattering in Bragg directions from single crystal of CoGa diffusional smoothening of the quantum beats was absent within the statistical errors.
