Notizen: In the case of nearly incompressible elastic materials the strain energy, the shear stress and the difference of normal stresses can be computed accurately by direct methods when the p-version of the finite element method is used. Computation of the sum of the normal stresses requires special procedures. In this paper such procedures are described and examples are presented.

Notizen: The paper addresses the question of the accuracy and reliability of the computational analysis of the rhombic plate problem. The Kirchhoff model has a large error (measured in the energy norm) in comparison with the three dimensional solution with a soft simple support; also for very thin plates (t = 1/100a) and all angles (up to α = 90°). The Reissner-Mindlin model gives results 3-5 times better and is less sensitive to the change of the plate angle. The Kirchhoff model is a relatively good approximation of three dimensional setting for a hard simple support. The paradoxical (polygon) behaviour of the simply supported Kirchhoff plate extends to the Reissner-Mindlin model with a hard support. The finite element solution of the Kirchhoff model is addressed in detail. It is shown that higher degree methods are clearly preferable and that the skewness of the elements does not influence essentially the accuracy of the method; the singularity of the solution, which strongly depends on the skewness of the plate, is the primary cause of the deterioration of the performance of the FEM.

Notizen: The principles governing the formulation of hierarchic models for laminated composites are discussed. The essential features of the hierarchic models described herein are: (a) the exact solutions corresponding to the hierarchic sequence of models converge to the exact solution of the corresponding problem of elasticity for a fixed laminate thickness, and (b) the exact solution of each model converges to the same limit as the exact solution of the corresponding problem of elasticity with respect to the laminate thickness approaching zero. Hierarchic models make the computation of any engineering data possible to an arbitrary level of precision within the framework of the theory of elasticity. Examples are presented.

Notizen: This paper addresses the problem of assessing the quality of an a posteriori error estimate of a finite element solution. An error estimate based on local L2-projections is analysed in the case of translation-invariant meshes. It is shown that for general meshes this technique does not lead to an asymptotically exact estimator. The problem is analysed in detail in the one-dimensional setting. It is shown that an asymptotically exact estimator is not the optimal one when the solution is not sufficiently smooth. An optimal estimator for adaptively constructed meshes is given. Finally, a general mathematical framework for the quality assessment of estimators is introduced.

Notizen: The rate of convergence of the finite element method is a function of the strategy by which the number of degrees-of-freedom are increased. Alternative stragegies are examined in the light of recent theoretical results and computational experience.

Notizen: This paper suggests a simple expert system frame and provides the domain knowledge for the optimal mesh design and the prediction of the error in the energy norm for the problem of plane elasticity using the hp-extension in the finite element method. The expert system monitors the progress of the analysis, guides the user through the various steps and is able to reason about its own advice. In an example the user-expert communication is shown and the superiority of the results is demonstrated.

Notizen: When applying numerical methods for the computation of stationary waves from the Helmholtz equation, one obtains ‘numerical waves’ that are dispersive also in non-dispersive media. The numerical wave displays a phase velocity that depends on the parameter k of the Helmholtz equation. In dispersion analysis, the phase difference between the exact and the numerical solutions is investigated. In this paper, the authors' recent result on the phase difference for one-dimensional problems is numerically evaluated and discussed in the context of other work directed to this topic. It is then shown that previous error estimates in H1-norm are of nondispersive character but hold for medium or high wavenumber on extremely refined mesh only. On the other hand, recently proven error estimates for constant resolution contain a pollution term. With certain assumptions on the exact solution, this term is of the order of the phase difference. Thus a link is established between the results of dispersion analysis and the results of numerical analysis. Throughout the paper, the presentation and discussion of theoretical results is accompanied by numerical evaluation of several model problems. Special attention is given to the performance of the Galerkin method with a higher order of polynomial approximation p(h-p-version).

Notizen: We develop effective approaches with which complex three-dimensional components may be analysed with a high and virtually guaranteed accuracy. The main computational tool is a h-p version of FEM practically realized with the p-version program STRIPE having a mesh generator for automatic mesh refinement at edges and vertices. Use of advanced extraction methods and new theoretical approaches give exponential convergence rates for accuracies in all engineering data of interest. New methods for reliable calculation of local stresses and stress intensity data at edges and vertices to be used for fatigue dimensioning at fillets, damage tolerance assessment of three-dimensional flaws, etc., are given. A complex real-life problem is reliably analysed in order to demonstrate the practical usefulness of the procedures advocated. The technical details will be given in forthcoming papers.

Notizen: A special approach to deal with elliptic problems with singularities is introduced. It is shown that this approach, to be called an auxiliary mapping technique, in the framework of the p-version of the finite element method yields an exponential rate of convergence. It is also shown that this technique can deal with elliptic problems on unbounded domains in R2 as well. (AMS(MOS) subject classifications: Primary, 65N30, 65N15.)

Notizen: The paper is the first in the series addressing the h-p version of the finite element method for parabolic equations. The h-p version is applied to both time and space variables. The present paper addresses the case when in time the p-version with one single time element is used. Error estimation is given and numerical computations are presented.
