    Notes: Abstract Objective: We studied possible sex differences of the effect of fenofibrate on serum lipoproteins. Twenty-three patients with primary hypercholesterolaemia (10 postmenopausal women and 13 aged-matched men) were treated with slow-release fenofibrate for 96 weeks. Results: Steady state lipoprotein concentrations were reached after 12 and 24 weeks of treatment in women and men, respectively. During the subsequent follow-up the lipoprotein concentrations remained constant. In women total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreased from 299 to 234 mg⋅dl−1 and from 210 to 151 mg⋅dl−1, respectively, and in men from 265 to 233 mg⋅dl−1 and from 192 to 160 mg⋅dl−1. The decrease in triglycerides was also more pronounced in women (−42%) than in men (−18%). High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol increased significantly in women from 53 to 63 mg⋅dl−1 but not in men (45 to 50 mg⋅dl−1). Since the changes in LDL and HDL cholesterol occurred in opposite directions, the decrease in LDL/HDL cholesterol ratio was accentuated in both groups. However, this ratio was decreased almost twofold in women (−41%) compared to men (−23%). Although the serum concentrations of fenofibric acid were 1.3-fold higher in women than in men, which was probably due to the higher body weight in men (1.2-fold), this difference can hardly explain the favorable effect on lipoproteins in women. Conclusion: The present study indicates that fenofibrate might be very effective by reducing the concentrations of atherogenic lipoproteins in postmenopausal women.

    Notes: Summary The effects of two different plant sterols on intestinal cholesterol absorption were compared in normal volunteers by an intestinal perfusion study during a control period followed by high dose infusion of sitosterol or sitostanol (3.6 μmol/min), to which subjects were allocated in a randomized manner. Cholesterol absorption during the control period was similar in the two groups, averaging 0.88 ± 0.48 μmol/min (32 ± 11%) for group I (sitosterol) and 0.68 ± 0.33 μmol/min (29 ± 9%) for group II (sitostanol). The infusion of a high dose of sitosterol resulted in a significant reduction of cholesterol absorption to 0.47 μmol/min (16%). Following the same dose of sitostanol, cholesterol absorption diminished significantly to 0.15 ± 0.11 μmol/min (5.1 ± 2.9%). Overall cholesterol absorption declined during sitosterol infusion by almost 50%, whereas sitostanol infusion caused a reduction of cholesterol absorption by almost 85%. These findings of a more effective inhibition of cholesterol absorption by sitostanol might confirm the observation recorded by others that an increase in hydrophobicity of a plant sterol results in a higher affinity but lower capacity to mixed micells. This may cause an effective displacement of cholesterol from micellar binding and therefore diminished cholesterol absorption.

    Notes: We report the successful application of an optically pumped molecular beam laser for efficient and selective population transfer from v″=0 to high lying vibrational levels of Na2 in the electronic ground state. More than 50% of the molecules in a thermally populated rotational level of v″=0 can be transferred to a state v″(very-much-greater-than)1 with typically ≥75% of the molecules excited out of the initial state found in the predetermined end vibrational level and approximately ≤25% distributed over other levels according to the Franck–Condon factors. The applicability of this technique to the study of collision processes involving vibrationally highly excited levels is discussed. This work also contributes in general to a better understanding of optically pumped dimer lasers.

    Notes: The feasibility of a novel technique for efficient and selective population transfer from a thermally populated level 1 via an intermediate state 2 to level 3 is experimentally demonstrated. It is shown for sodium dimers that the process of on- or near-resonance stimulated Raman scattering with only partially overlapping laser beams is, in particular, useful for the selective population of high vibrational levels of particles in a molecular beam. This is achieved when the interaction with the Stokes laser, coupling levels 2 and 3, begins earlier than the interaction with the pump laser. The phenomenon, which is closely related to the formation of "trapped states,'' is quantitatively explained using the basis of eigenstates of molecules strongly coupled to the radiation fields. The similarity and difference to related techniques such as rapid adiabatic passage phenomena in two-level systems, off-resonant stimulated Raman scattering, or stimulated emission pumping is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Differential cross sections for rotational transitions in Na2–Ne, Ar collisions are measured up to very large Δj. It is shown that the energy dependent anisotropy ΔR(E) of the interaction potential can be determined from these data using simple classical relations of ΔR and the rainbow angle θR. Excellent agreement with ab initio data is demonstrated and underlines the usefulness of this concept.

    Notes: The scattering of high vibrationally excited sodium molecules Na2(v=31) with Ne atoms at 180 meV collision energy is investigated in a crossed molecular beam arrangement using laser optical methods. Angularly resolved rotationally inelastic and vibrationally elastic cross sections ji→jf are measured for ji =5, 7, and 9≤jf ≤25. Pronounced rotational rainbow maxima are observed, the angular position of which indicates a significantly larger anisotropy of the interaction potential compared to that of Na2(v=0)–Ne. Except for the increase of the anisotropy the vibrational excitation has little effect on the dynamics of rotational energy transfer. Good agreement with a new semiempirical Na2–Ne potential surface V(r,R,γ) is found.

    Notes: We report the resolution of supernumerary rotational rainbows for rotationally inelastic ji → jf=0 transitions in Na2–He, Ne, Ar scattering. The analysis yields the energy dependent anisotropy ΔR(E) in very good agreement with data from other sources.
