Notes: [Auszug] Privacy concerns relating to the collection and dissemination of medical data recently have been translated into laws that restrict disclosure. Some European Community nations, for example, have placed strong restrictions on the release of personal data without explicit individual consent. We ...

Notes: [Auszug] The exponential growth of the World-Wide Web has transformed it into an ecology of knowledge in which highly diverse information is linked in an extremely complex and arbitrary manner. But even so, as we show here, there is order hidden in the web. We find that web pages are distributed among ...

Notes: [Auszug] Advances in multiagent simulation techniques have made possible the study of realistic highway traffic patterns and have allowed theories based on driver behaviour to be tested. Such simulations display various empirical features of traffic flows, and are used to design traffic controls that ...

Notes: Summary The endosperm proteins encoded by the genome Hch in Hordeum chilense, Tritordeum (amphiploid Hordeum chilense x Triticum turgidum), common wheat-H. chilense addition lines, and the segregating plants resulting from the cross Tritordeum x T. turgidum, were fractionated by three electrophoretical techniques: SDS-PAGE, A-PAGE, and bidimensional PAGE. Prolamin subunits with a high molecular weight (HMW) were well visualized by SDS-PAGE, the A-PAGE technique permitted good resolution for many hordeins and gliadins, and two-dimensional electrophoresis allowed new sets of bands coded by gene complexes from H. chilense chromosomes to be distinguished. The loci Hor-Hch1 (up to 11 subunits belonging to the ω-, β — and α-hordeins), Glu-Hch1 (one HMW prolamin subunit), Hor-Hch2 (one α-hordein), and Hor-Hch3 (up to four α-hordeins) were located on the H. chilense chromosomes 1Hch, 5Hch, and 7Hch.

Notes: Abstract We present a detailed model of collaboration in communities of practice and we examine its dynamic consequences for the group as a whole. We establish the existence of a novel mechanism that allows the community to naturally adapt to growth, specialization, or changes in the environment without the need for central controls. This mechanism relies on the appearance of a dynamic instability that initiates an exploration of novel interactions, eventually leading to higher performance for the community as a whole.

Notes: Abstract Metaphase-I chromosome association in PMCs of five F1 hybrids 6x-triticale x T. turgidum (2n=5x=35 and genomes AABBR), and 13 plants from their backross or self offspring is reported. In wheat 18 chromosome arms and in rye 14 arms were recognized after C-banding and individually studied. Plants of backcross and F2 showed variability for number and type of rye chromosomes, having in common the 28 durum wheat chromosomes (AABB). By testing meiotic association in plants with different rye chromosome constitutions, significant negative correlations were found. A clear negative effect of rye heterochromatin on pairing in wheat chromosomes is observed, the influence being more pronounced for large arms than for the short ones.

Notes: Summary Rye chromosome constitution and stability in a series of plants of G2 and G3 generations obtained after the cross between hexaploid triticale and durum wheat (F1: 2n=5x=35; genomes AA BB R) are studied using the zymogram phenotype expression for the following isozyme marker genes: Mdh-2c1 (1R), Cpx-c2 (2R), Got-3-c1 (3R), Pgm-c1 (4R), Est-c6 (6R), Got-2-c1 (6R), Acph-c1 (7R) and Got-1-c1 (7R). The results were corroborated using C-banding in a sample of the plant population studied and make clear the utility of biochemical methods in quick cytogenetic analysis. From the results, a different rate of transmission for each rye chromosome is inferred.

Notes: Abstract We present a dynamical theory of asset price bubbles that exhibits the appearance of bubbles and their subsequent crashes. We show that when speculative trends dominate over fundamental beliefs, bubbles form, leading to the growth of asset prices away from their fundamental value. This growth makes the system increasingly susceptible to any exogenous shock, thus eventually precipitating a crash. We also present computer experiments which in their aggregate behavior confirm the predictions of the theory.

Notes: Abstract The explosive growth of the Internet has made possible an economic transformation in which commerce will become largely electronic. In this vision, the medium of communication and negotiation becomes a distributed network of computers equipped with robust, secure and trusted “cash” mechanisms. It is thus of paramount importance to design mechanisms that will ensure timely and reliable transactions in cyberspace. In this paper we present a methodology for quantitatively managing the risk and cost of executing transactions in a distributed network environment by exploiting an analogy with modern financial portfolio theory. We illustrate the methodology with several concrete examples under different pricing schemes, as well as with empirical measurements of Internet traffic.

Notes: Abstract In a cytological analysis of the meiotic behaviour in PMCs of five hybrids between hexaploid triticale and durum wheat, Triticum turgidum L., chromosome association at meiotic first metaphase and the behaviour of rye univalents at first anaphase were analyzed. The chromosomes of the B genome, chromosomes 4A and 7A (disomic condition), and the seven rye chromosomes, could be distinguished by their C-banding pattern. No wheat-rye paring was detected at metaphase I. Rye univalents were observed as laggards which disjoined either predominantly equationaly (2R, 3R, 4R, 5R and 7R) or predominantly reductionaly (1R and 6R). Misdivision occurred in up to 3% of rye univalents.
