Notes: Serial measurements of plasma volume were made in 56 normal, healthy primigravidae at 12, 16, 20, 25, 30, 34 and 38 weeks' gestation using the Evans Blue (T-1824) dye dilution technique with the women lying on their sides. Measurements were also made on 19 of these patients six weeks post partum. There was a progressive plasma volume expansion to a maximum between 30 to 34 weeks, with a terminal plateau. The expansion between the mean non-pregnant volume and the mean maximum measured volume during pregnancy was 1246 ml. There was a significant relationship between plasma volume at 38 weeks' gestation and the birthweight of the baby.

Notes: Summary. Plasma volume, serum α2-macroglobulin, α1-antitrypsin, Cï inactivator and α2-antiplasmin, and plasma antithrombin III were measured in 10 pregnant women at gestation periods of 12–14 and 37–38 weeks. The proteinase inhibitors were also measured in 10 non-pregnant healthy women. There was a significant increase in the α1-antitrypsin concentration and significant decreases in α2-macroglobulin and Cï inactivator, but the total circulating quantity of all the proteinase inhibitors was significantly increased.

Notes: Summary. The blood levels of α2-macroglobulin, α1-antitrypsin, CT inactivator, antithrombin III and α2-antiplasmin were measured in 18 primigravidae with moderate or severe pre-eclampsia and in 18 gestation-matched primigravidae with uncomplicated pregnancy. The mean levels of the proteinase inhibitors did not differ between the pre-eclampsia and uncomplicated pregnancy groups.

Notes: The addition of 0.25% isoflurane to 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen provides more effective pain relief in labour than 50% nitrous oxide alone. This study was carried out to determine whether self-administration by demand valve of 0.25% isoflurane in 50% nitrous oxide in oxygen premixed in cylinders at 13.7 MPa (IN2O) was practical and safe during labour. Two hundred and twenty-one mothers used IN2O in labour after 50% nitrous oxide had become inadequate for pain relief. Data on IN2O use was recorded during labour and details of the course of labour and opioid usage were taken from the clinical notes. The duration of IN2O use was 0.1–12.35 h (median 2.3). Thirty-two mothers (14.5%) required an epidural and intolerance to IN2O was seen in a maximum of 17 cases (7.7%). One hundred and twenty-six cases were primiparous and 93 parous with 151 deliveries being spontaneous and 70 interventional, of which 12 were by Caesarean section. Maternal blood loss was 20–1500 ml (median 200 ml). Apgar scores at 1 and 5 min were unaffected by IN2O use although a positive correlation was found between the use of opioids and the number of neonates with a 1-min score below 8 and the number requiring resuscitation. Six neonates had an Apgar score below 8 at 5 min, but their condition was adequately explained by factors other than the sedative technique used. Self-administered IN2O was found to be a safe and practical technique for sedation in labour when 50% nitrous oxide alone had become inadequate.

Notes: Summary Four subjects were studied during exercise at 50% of maximum oxygen uptake after a normal diet, after a low carbohydrate (CHO) diet following exercise-induced glycogen depletion, and after a high CHO diet. This regime has previously been shown to cause changes in the amount of glycogen stored in the exercising muscles. Metabolic and respiratory parameters were measured during the exercise. The respiratory exchange ratio, blood lactate, blood pyruvate, blood glucose and plasma triglycerides were lower than normal following the low CHO diet and higher than normal following the high CHO diet. Plasma free fatty acids and plasma glycerol were higher than normal after the low CHO diet and lower than normal after the high CHO diet. The contribution of CHO to metabolism was less than normal after the low CHO diet and greater than normal after the high CHO diet. The altered availability of FFA does not appear to be a result of the variations in the blood lactate content.

Notes: Abstract Moiré principles and procedures were surveyed with a view toward adaptation to measurement of complex strain distribution in solid propellants. Compliant coating and photosensitive materials were selected for grid reproduction. The most flexible of the several possible procedures for recording moiré data was found to be grid photography. A novel “grid-shift” technique employing coarse grids was developed for point-by-point determination of surface displacement derivatives, and the grid-shift relations for large strain and large rotation were derived. The technique is extremely versatile, permitting the analysis of strain of dynamically deformed specimens in nonambient environmental conditions of temperature, pressure or atmosphere. The utility of the technique was demonstrated by application to static and dynamic problems.
