Notizen: Abstract  Ferric-ferrous ratios have been measured in 22 experiments on three natural compositions equilibrated at known temperature (950°–1100° C) and oxygen fugacity, and at water-saturated conditions over a pressure range from 0.05 to 0.2 GPa. There does not appear to be any reaction between the melt and the capsule material that affects the redox state of the iron in the melt. An empirical expression for the anhydrous behavior of the redox state of iron in each of these compositions has also been determined at 1 bar as a function of temperature and oxygen fugacity. A direct comparison of the hydrous ferric-ferrous values with the calculated anhydrous values shows that the dissolution of water in a peralkaline rhyolite, andesite, and an augite minette has no effect on the redox state of the iron in these melts. This result parallels the effect of water on sulfide speciation in basaltic melts, and confirms published results on experimental hydrous basalts.

Notizen: Abstract The compositions of the cores and margins of the plagioclase phenocrysts in glassy acid rocks have been used to derive equilibration temperatures with their enclosing liquids using the Kudo-Weill geothermometer. The equilibration temperatures inferred from the compositions of the feldspar margins at 0.5 kilobars water pressure, or less, agree well with the temperatures obtained from the coexisting iron-titanium oxide microphenocrysts. These low water pressures are supported by the water fugacities deduced from the coexisting biotitemagnetite-sanidine assemblages. Acid magma represented by these rocks has a crystallization interval in excess of 100° C and liquidus temperatures above 900° C.

Notizen: Abstract The free energy data for the simple fluorides, chlorides and hydroxides have been used to predict the distribution of these anions in hydrous minerals. The calculated partition of fluorine in phlogopite agrees well with published results; the distribution of fluorine and hydroxyl between apatite and phlogopite is temperature dependent and has been calculated. The temperatures deduced from analyses of natural apatite-biotite pairs frequently show discrepancies as compared with independent temperature estimates; these probably arise from late-stage exchange of the fluorine in phlogopite with an aqueous fluid, for which independent evidence is available. The fugacity of phosphorus in equilibrium with apatite, a ubiquitous hydrous mineral, has been calculated for various mineral assemblages. The estimates, which are subject to considerable error, are lower for basanites and alkali-basalts than for tholeiites and range from approximately 10−14 at 1000° C to 10−16 bars at 750° C for fayalitic rhyolites.

Notizen: Abstract The voluminous Pleistocene—Recent Taupo rhyolites typically contain phenocrysts of plagioclase (oligoclase-labradorite), quartz, titanomagnetite, ilmenite, and ferromagnesian silicates. Ferromagnesian assemblages correlate with well defined Fe-Ti oxide equilibration temperature ranges and allow the rhyolites to be subdivided as follows: (1) Cummingtonite (c)—calcic hornblende (hb)—orthopyroxene (opx); 725–755°C, (2) Hb-opx, 750–825°C, (3) Biotite-hb-(c-opx), 720–765°C, (4) Opx-clinopyroxene (cpx), 860–915°C, (5) Fe olivine-opx-cpx, one sample with temperature of 900°C. Plagioclase and orthopyroxene phenocryst compositions typically exhibit a range of composition up to ∼20 mol.%. Calculated average phenocryst equilibration pressures (P total) range between 0.5–4.9 kb, and average 2.2 kb (∼7–8 km depth), indicating upper crustal crystallization. These calculations are very sensitive to variations in phenocryst composition. Calculated $$/_{{\text{H}}_2 {\text{O}}} $$ for the amphibole and biotite-bearing rhyolites indicate phenocryst equilibration under $$P_{{\text{H}}_2 {\text{O}}} \simeq P_{{\text{total}}} $$ , with $$X_{{\text{H}}_2 {\text{O}}} $$ ∼0.17–0.24 (5–8 wt. %). The precipitation of cummingtonite is thus temperature dependent, the upper limit being close to 760°C. Eruptive mechanisms of the lavas, pumices, and ash-flow deposits are evidently not primarily controlled by temperature, P total, $$P_{{\text{H}}_2 {\text{O}}} $$ , or crystal content of the magmas, and explanations must lie in kinetic and fluid dynamic behavior of the magmas. For the Taupo rhyolites, it is suggested that the critical size of a magma body (i.e. Rayleigh number) is a controlling factor in that it will influence the convective regime; fully turbulent convection is deduced to have occurred within the larger magma bodies. One consequence is intense vesiculation, prior to eruption, within the uppermost zones of these magma chambers, and the voluminous pumice deposits are believed to emanate from such chambers. Oscillatory compositional zoning within pyroxene phenocrysts is consistent with magma convection.

Notizen: Abstract Forty five cinder cones and associated lava flows have erupted within the last 300,000 years along five parallel lines through the calc-alkaline volcano, Sanganguey, in the northwestern segment of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. Lavas erupted from these cinder cones include ne- and hynormative alkali basalts, hawaiites, mugearites, and benmoreites. It is unusual that this suite has erupted in a calc-aikaline volcanic belt where volcanoes in the vicinity have been erupting calc-alkaline andesites, dacites and rhyodacites. Incompatible trace elements such Ba, Rb, Sr, and LREEs show little change with decreasing Mg, Ni, and Cr in the series alkali basalt to hawaiite, suggesting that simple crystal fractionation of observed phenocrysts has not been the dominant process in the derivation of the hawaiites from the alkali basalts. Petrographic evidence of magma mixing along with observed variation of trace element abundances suggests that the alkali basalts might represent mixtures of primitive magma with more evolved compositions. Crystal fractionation is capable of explaining major and most trace element trends in the series hawaiite — mugearite — benmoreite. However, such a process could only occur at pressure because of the requirement that clinopyroxene be a major crystallizing phase. The anomolous association of alkaline magmatism contemporaneously with calc-alkaline magmatism is probably related to the complex tectonic history associated with the rearrangement of plate boundaries in the vicinity of western Mexico.

Notizen: Abstract We have conducted high pressure (to 3 kbar), water saturated melting experiments on an andesite (62 wt% SiO2) and a basaltic andesite (55 wt% SiO2) from western Mexico. A close comparison between the experimental phase assemblages and their compositions, and the phenocryst assemblages of the lavas, is found in water saturated liquids, suggesting that the CO2 content was minimal in the fluid phase. Thus the historic lavas from Volcan Colima (with phenocrysts of orthopyroxene, augite, plagioclase, and hornblende) were stored at a temperature between 950–975 °C, at a pressure between 700–1500 bars, and with a water content of 3.0–5.0 wt%. A hornblende andesite (spessartite) from Mascota, of nearly identical composition but with only amphibole phenocrysts, had a similar temperature but equilibrated at a minimum of 2000 bars pressure with a dissolved water content of at least 5.5 wt% in the liquid. Experiments on the basaltic andesite show that the most common natural phenocryst assemblages (olivine, ±augite, ±plagioclase) could have precipitated at temperatures from 1000–1150 °C, in liquids with a wide range of dissolved water content (∼2.0–6.0 wt%) and a corresponding pressure range. A lava of the same bulk composition with phenocrysts of hornblende, olivine, plagioclase, and augite is restricted to temperatures below 1000 °C and pressures below 2500 bars, corresponding to 〈5.5 wt% water in the residual liquid. Although there is some evidence for mixing in the andesites (sporadic olivine phenocrysts), the broad theme of the history of both lava types is that the phenocryst assemblages for both the andesitic magmas and basaltic andesitic magmas are generated from degassing and reequilibration on ascent of initially hydrous parents containing greater than 6 wt% water. Indeed andesitic magmas could be related to a basaltic andesite parent by hornblende-plagioclase fractionation under the same hydrous conditions.

Notizen: Abstract Ferric and ferrous iron concentrations have been measured in 57 silicate liquids equilibrated at temperatures (1,200°–1,330°C) above the liquidus and at oxygen fugacities close to those defined by quartz-fayalite-magnetite. The experimental results reported here span virtually the entire known compositional range of lavas. An empirical equation relating the mole fraction of Fe2O3 and FeO to oxygen fugacity, absolute temperature and liquid composition at 1 bar has been formulated, based on the present experimental results and published data. Extrapolating the proposed empirical relationship over several hundred degrees, for instance below the solidus of the 1965 Makaopuhi tholeiitic lava lake, yields calculated oxygen fugacities which are a little lower than those measured directly in drill holes; at 1,100°C this discrepancy is 0.4 log unit. However, the agreement between the oxygen fugacities calculated from our empirical equation and those indicated by the composition of Fe-Ti oxides in andesites and siliceous obsidians is much closer.

Notizen: Abstract A series of basaltic and andesitic lavas from three centers in the Cascades (Lassen, Medicine Lake, Mt. Shasta) have been investigated. The lavas are weakly porphyritic, containing phenocrysts of plagioclase, augite, and olivine or orthopyroxene; these phases are also found in the groundmass. Titanomagnetite is a groundmass phase in most lavas but it appears to be absent in some. A sub-calcic augite is found in the groundmass in some of the basic lavas. Orthopyroxenes are present only in the salic lavas and show an increase in calcium with increasing iron. The range in composition shown by both phenocryst and groundmass plagioclase is very similar except that the phenocrysts extend to slightly more calcic compositions. The residual glasses in many of the lavas have a rhyolitic composition. However, only those from the Shasta andesites have normative salic constituents that plot near the ternary minimum in the Ab-Or-Qtz system at 500 bars. Both chemical and mineralogical data allow the lavas of the different centers to be distinguished from one another. The most likely origin for the orogenic lavas of the Cascades is by partial melting of the upper mantle.

Notizen: Abstract The variation of silica activity with temperature and pressure for a variety of silica buffers (mineral pairs) allows P total to be calculated for a wide range of igneous rocks. The method also depends on evaluating (∂ log a SiO 2/∂P)T and (Δ log a SiO 2/Δ T)p; the former is equivalent to the partial molar volume of silica in silicate liquids, while the latter is estimated from published experiments on natural melts. Results for calc-alkaline rhyolites with phenocrysts of quartz, olivine or orthopyroxene, and iron-titanium oxides, range from 3.45 to 9.58 kilobars; a pantellerite is intermediate at 7.53 kilobars. At 1327° C, the silicate inclusions in diamond equilibrated at 63.5 kilobars, and the kimberlite crystallisation path intersected the baddeleyite-zircon reaction at 55.7 kilobars. Two trachybasalts would equilibrate with their lherzolite xenoliths at 17.0 and 21.0 kilobars at surface quenching temperatures. Potassic lavas such as orendites and ugandites at 1300° C would be in equilibrium with mantle olivine-orthropyroxene at 35.1 and 69.0 kilobars respectively. Basalts and basaltic-andesites could equilibrate (at 1100° C) with quartz at between 24.9 and 26.8 kilobars; quartz can therefore be considered a possible high pressure “xenocryst” in lavas with low Sr87/Sr86 ratios. Andesites will equilibrate at 1300° C with the mantle at a depth of 75 kilometres; at greater depths andesite will have a basaltic precursor. In general, lavas with low silica activity will equilibrate at greater depths in the mantle than those with higher silica activities. The Apollo 11 basalts contain minerals which suggest equilibration at 37 kilobars; the calculated quenching temperature is 1009° C, from which logf O 2 can be derived (−15.2) which in turn indicates approximately 0.10% Fe2O3 in these lavas.
