    Notes: Abstract AC impedance measurements of 99.99% pure ZnTe were performed. Both capacitance and dielectric loss factor were found to be dependent on the frequency of the applied field, the intensity of illumination, and the temperature. The capacitance under illumination was observed to have a nonlinear variation with temperature. Beyond 323 K the capacitance was observed to increase drastically with temperature. The experimental results have been explained on the basis of space polarization. Further, it is concluded that a process similar to “Polarization Catastrophe” is taking place in ZnTe.

    Notes: The problem of estimating the extinction factor by use of polarized X-rays has been re-examined in the light of the theory of X-ray diffraction in real crystals developed recently by Zachariasen. Expressions are given for deriving the extinction-free structure factors in terms of the observed integrated intensities for perpendicular and parallel polarizations. A simple attachment to a diffractometer for analysing the polarization of the diffracted beam is described. Measurements on quartz are presented; the extinction-free structure factors so obtained are in excellent agreement with Zachariasen's calculated values based on new f curves.

    Notes: Assuming a model based on permanent dipole-dipole, dispersion, induction and repulsion forces, the potential energy of a molecule in a nematic liquid crystal is derived as a function of its orientation. Analysis of the temperature variation of the degree of orientational order in p-azoxyanisole (PAA) and p-azoxyphenetole (PAP) indicates that the permanent dipole interactions are relatively unimportant. Making use of a mean field approximation, a statistical theory of long-range orientational order is developed and the thermodynamic properties of the ordered system are derived relative to those of the completely disordered one. Application of the theory to PAA and PAP shows conclusively that a certain degree of short-range orientational order is present in the liquid phase. Using just three parameters for each compound, viz. the two constants of the potential function and a numerical factor to allow for short range order, the following physical properties have been evaluated which are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data: the long-range orientational order parameter, specific heat and compressibility as functions of temperature in the liquid crystalline range, the latent heat and volume change at the nematic-isotropic transition point. The magnetic birefringence of the liquid phase affords an independent estimate of the short range order which supports the previous calculations.

    Notes: A theory of the very high rotatory power exhibited by cholesteric liquid crystals is developed by the use of the Jones calculus for optical systems. The calculations are based on the model proposed by de Vries in which the liquid crystal is regarded as built up of a large number of thin birefringent layers arranged helically. When light is incident normal to the layers, i.e. along the screw axis, selective reflexion of one of the circularly polarized components takes place and the rotatory dispersion in the neighbourhood of the region of reflexion is anomalous. The reflexion curve and the amplitude attenuation factor, exp (−ξ), for circularly polarized light at normal incidence are derived as functions of wavelength by setting up difference equations closely similar to those formulated by Darwin in his dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction. Within the range of total reflexion, ξ is real, primary extinction occurs and the medium is highly circularly dichroic. The spectral width of the reflexion and the primary extinction coefficient predicted by theory compare favourably with the experimental values. Outside the region of total reflexion, ξ is imaginary and opposite in sign on opposite sides of the reflected band. This is responsible for the reversal of the sign of the rotation on crossing the band. The anomalous part of the rotation is a direct measure of the phase of the primary wave given by the dynamical theory.
