Notizen: Abstract The sulfidation behavior of five Ni-Mo-Al ternary alloys and two Ni-Al binary alloys was studied over the temperature range 600–800°C in sulfur vapor of 10−2 atm. The effect of sulfur pressure was also investigated at $$P_{S_2 } = 10^{ - 2} $$ and10−4 atm. using two Ni-Mo-Al alloys. The sulfidation of all Ni-Mo-Al andNi-Al alloys followed the parabolic rate law. The sulfidation rate decreasedwith increasing Al content for a given Mo content for Ni-Mo-Al alloys. Twobinary alloys, Ni-13.5Al and Ni-31Al, sulfidized at comparable rates toNi-30Mo-7.5Al, which has excellent sulfidation resistance. The activationenergies for ternary alloys range from 44.8–50.8 kcal/mol, whereas those forNi-13.5Al and Ni-31Al are 41.5 and 39.1 kcal/mol, respectively. Complexscales formed on all Ni-Mo-Al alloys, consisting of an outer layer of nickelsulfide and an inner layer of MoS2, A12S3, and Al0.55Mo2S4. Sulfide scalesformed on Ni-Al alloys were bilayered, consisting of an outer layer of nickelsulfide and an inner layer of A12S3. The low sulfidation rate of the ternaryalloys was attributed to the combined presence of both A12S3 and Al0.55Mo2S4.The sulfidation kinetics of two Ni-Mo-Al alloys are independent of sulfurpressure, suggesting that the growth of the inner layer was the dominant process.

Notizen: Abstract The sulfidation properties of Ni-Nb alloys containing additions of niobium up to 40 wt.% have been studied at $$P_{S_2 } = 0.01$$ atm over the temperature range 550-700 °C. The sulfidation reactions followed the parabolic rate law; the sulfidation rates decreased with increasing amounts of niobium. An Arrhenius plot of the rate constants gave activation energies of 25.0+3.5 kcal/ mole. The scales formed on Ni-Nb alloys were multilayered, generally consisting of an outer layer of nickel sulfide ( NiS1+x and Ni3S2) and an inner complex layer of NiNb3S6 plus NbS2. The position of the original metal surface was notedy platinum-wire marker experiments to be the interface between the inner andouter layers. The location of the marker indicates that the outer layer, generally greater in thickness than the inner layer, grew by outward diffusion of the nickel cations, and the inner layer formed probably by the inward diffusion of sulfur. Neither preferential sulfidation nor internal sulfidation was observed. The development of the scale structures from the transient stage to steady state was also studied.

Notizen: Abstract The sulfidation behavior of Ni-Mo alloys containing up to 40 wt.% Mo was studied at $$P_{s_2 } $$ =0.01 atm. over the temperature range of 550–800°C. The alloys included two solid solutions (Ni-10Mo and Ni-20Mo), the single-phase intermetallic compound Ni4Mo(Ni-29Mo), and two alloys which were two-phase, Ni-30Mo and Ni-40Mo (Ni4Mo+Ni3Mo). The sulfidation of all alloys followed the parabolic rate law. The rate of sulfidation decreased with increasing amounts of Mo. Activation energies for sulfidation gave values of 39.1±1.0 kcal/mol. The sulfide scales were bilayered, consisting of an outer layer nickel sulfide (NiS1+x and Ni3S2) and an inner, complex layer of MoS2 plus intermetallic particles. The rate-controlling step of the sulfidation for the alloys was inward sulfur diffusion and/or outward nickel diffusion through the inner MoS2 layer. Neither selective sulfidation nor internal sulfidation were observed. No significant difference in the sulfidation kinetics, sulfide structure, and scale constitution could be noted between single-phase alloys and two-phase alloys. The location of the markers was the interface between the inner and outer layers, indicating that the inner layer formed by inward diffusion of sulfur, and the outer layer grew by outward nickel diffusion. The inability to form a continuous protective molybdenum sulfide layer is discussed in terms of the structure of MoS2 and changes caused by intercalation of Ni into the layered crystal structure. The decrease in sulfidation rate with increasing Mo was attributed to increasing amounts of the intermetallic compound. The increasing volume fraction of particles decreased the available diffusion area in the inner layer and provided a “blocking” effect.

Notizen: Abstract Cultured immature panicles of rice formed plantlets from spikelets without callus or embryoid formation on MS and HE media containing 2 mg/l each of NAA and kinetin. Developmental stage, ploidy of explant and plant growth regulators in the medium are the major factors affecting the frequency of spikelet budding in young panicle culture. It is suggested that spikelet budding occurs by the reversion of floral primordia to vegetative stage or by the formation of adventitious buds from epidermal cells.

Notizen: Summary Using MS medium supplemented with 6% sucrose and hormones, plantlets were regenerated from the expiants of mature seeds and young panicles of IRs and IR54. Out of 157 regenerated plants (R1), three were found to be male sterile (ms): one from IRs and two from IR54, including a fertile and sterile chimaera. In the second generations (R2) of IR24 and IR54, one line from each segregated into male sterile and fertile plants. These ms plants could be divided into two types with pollen failure: pollen free (without pollen) and pollen abortive. IR24 was a semi-restorer for ms-plants of the pollen free type derived from the second generation of IR54 somaclones. The segregation ratio of fertile: sterile in both R2 of line 91 and the F2 of ms-plant/IR24 fitted the formula 15/16∶1/16 quite well, showing that the male-sterile was controlled by two independent nuclear genes. Until now, as we know, male-sterile could be produced by hybridization or mutagenesis: sometimes it could be found in nature by spontaneous mutation. Recently the cytoplasmic male-sterile of tobacco was produced by protoplast fusion. This is the first paper to report male-steriles in regenerated plants and their offspring obtained from somatic cell culture.

Notizen: Abstract We have studied the pre- onset deviation-from-linearity region, the transitional regime, and the foot region in the resistance vs temperature behavior of high- Critical Temperature oxide superconductors, employing time-varying magnetic fields and carefully controlled precise temperatures. We have previously shown that the best value of critical temperature can be extrapolated from the magnetic field induced divergence of the resistance vs inverse absolute temperature data as derived from the transitionaland/or foot regions, and that these data are in accord with results from Hall effect studies. The pre-onset region however, shows a differing non -diverging behavior. However sweep magnetic field studies show that, as a function of field, differential resistance data points corresponding to temperature values in the normal state, pre-onset state, and transitional state all lie on a straight line, whereas data points corresponding to the foot region and zero resistance region deviate from this line. We interpret these data to indicate that the phenomena that govern the pre- onset state constitute a different stage of processes that arise initially in the normal state at temperature slightly greater than the critical temperature, and continue in the transitional state at temperature slightly less than the critical temperature. We believe that the lifetime of the particle that mediates Cooper-pairing establishes these different stages of the process leading to superconductivity in the cuprates.

Notizen: Abstract A non-destructive method for the analysis of yttrium, aluminum and oxygen in Yttrium Aluminum Garnet /YAG/ by 14 MeV neutron activation analysis has been developed and evaluated. The fast neutron induces primarily /n, 2n/, /n, p/ or /n, α/ reactions with yttrium, aluminum, and oxygen to produce isotopes with measurable characteristic gamma-ray spectra. Concentrations of Y, Al and O were determined on the basis of calibrated nuclear decay emission spectra recorded on selected standards. After each analysis the crystal was returned to the furnace for further adjustments of the growth parameters, and any resultant elemental variations were observed in the next analysis. The accuracy of this method was determined by repeated analyses with various “YAG” crystals from a series of separate furnace runs.

Notizen: The curing characteristics of unaccelerated sulfur vulcanization of ENR 25 and ENR 50 were studied in the temperature range from 100-180°C. The range of sulfur loading was from 1.5 to 6.5 phr. The scorch time was determined by Mooney Shearing Disk Viscometer whereas the initial cure rate, maximum torque, and reversion properties were obtained from the Moving Die Rheometer (MDR 2000). Results shows that ENR 25 gives a longer scorch time than ENR 50, an observation similar to that in an accelerated system reported earlier. For temperature 〈 120°C, scorch time depends exponentially on sulfur loading for both rubbers. However, this dependence diminishes as temperature is increased. This observation is attributed to the availability of activated sulfur molecules for vulcanization. The initial cure rate and maximum torque increases with increasing sulfur loading. ENR 50, however, exhibits higher value than ENR 25, suggesting faster cure in the former. For a fixed sulfur loading, reversion is a time and temperature-dependent phenomenon. It decreases with increasing sulfur loading because of the increase of cross-linking density for both rubbers stuided. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: This paper develops a numerical technique for determining the shape sensitivity parameters in steady metal- forming processes such as drawing and rolling. The adjoint method is applied to the discrete non-linear system of equations in the finite element model in order to determine the discrete matrix of sensitivity parameters. In this work, two specific cases are considered. The first case involves determining the sensitivity of the process power requirement to the process geometry and the second case involves determining the sensitivity of the internal state variable distribution in the final product to the process geometry. The process geometry is assumed to be characterized by a finite number of shape parameters. The internal state variable distribution in this case represents the resistance to plastic flow and is considered to be related to the quality of the final product. Numerical examples for a simple drawing process are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm.
