Notes:
Biological purification of water pollutants depends upon a complex balance of organisms and environment conducive to effective metabolism. The bench scale test is useful to determine effects of a given waste water on that balance and to suggest controls promoting optimum purification. Applicability of laboratory results depends, in part, upon an experimental design similating anticipated operating conditions. This paper discusses advantages and limitations of historical bench-tests as a guide for design of tests giving data that are more useful during full-scale operation.
