Notes: Recent development of corrosion resistant bulk glassy alloys such as Zr-, Fe-, Ni- and Cu-base alloys were presented. It was clarified that the enrichment of cations in the passive film, which is responsible to corrosion resistance, depends on both alloy composition and environment. TEM observation also made it clear that alloys lose their advantageous properties such as corrosion resistance when they are devoid of or lose amorphous structure even in part due to low glass forming ability or heating. These findings were essentially similar to those of conventional amorphous alloys

Notes: Abstract A method utilizing light polarization was applied to take the projection data of absorbers in a highly scattering medium. The floor level of the projection data due to diffused light was significantly suppressed by detection of photons which preserved initial polarization. An optical computed tomgraphy image was reconstructed from the projection data taken by this method and exhibited higher spatial resolution than the image reconstructed from the projection data by conventional method.

Notes: [Auszug] Gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) is the most common mesenchymal tumour of the human gastrointestinal tract. Most GISTs are solitary, and gain-of-function mutations of the KIT protooncogene have been found in these tumours. We report here a family with multiple GISTs: affected members all ...

Notes: Summary The current state of understanding of pemphigus includes the following: 1. Pemphigus is an autoimmune disease. In all variants a circulating autoantibody is found which binds to epidermal cells. In vivo antibody may be found deposited in the epidermis of patients. 2. The autoantibody levels generally correlate with disease activity indicating a relationship between antibody and clinical disease. 3. Although complement components are found in lesional skin, complement does not appear to be necessary for dissolution of the epidermal cement substance. 4. The treatment of pemphigus with corticosteroids has drastically reduced mortality rates. 5. Three different groups have presented results in two different experimental systems which indicate that subsequent to binding of pemphigus antibody to epidermal cells a proteinase is activated. This proteinase(s) degrades the in-tercellular cement substance of epidermis which results in loss of cellular adhesion and acantholysis. There are numerous questions still remaining. What is the nature of the proteinase(s) and the surface protein(s) it cleaves? Does the binding of pemphigus antibody to the cell surface induce enzyme synthesis, specific enzyme activation, or generalized lysosomal secretion? The answers to these questions will have broad biologic relevance since they may elucidate the role of anticell surface antibodies in disease states.

Notes: Summary We present a case of desmoplastic fibroma in a child. The microscopic findings of desmoplastic fibroma of bone closely resemble that of the soft tissue desmoid tumor. Particularly, the agressive fibromatosis which occures peripherally and that proliferates to cortical bone is very similar to this tumor. The differential diagnosis of these both tumors is very difficult. It should be based on clinical and radiographic findings.

Notes: Abstract The purpose of the investigation was: 1) to derive the characteristic curves of Kodak, DuPont, Fuji, and Konica duplicating films; and 2) to compare their sensitivities, inherent contrasts, and latitudes. For statistical analysis the multivariate general linear model in Systat 4.1 with Sygraph was run on a Northgate 386/20 microcomputer. Kodak film had the highest Dmax, followed by those of Fuji, Konica and DuPont films. Fuji film was the most sensitive at higher densities whereas Kodak film was the most sensitive at lower densities, Konica and DuPont films were comparatively less sensitive. DuPont film had the highest inherent contrast, followed by Kodak, Konica, and Fuji films. Fuji film had the widest latitude, followed by Konica, Kodak, and DuPont films. The results of the experiment should not be construed as a recommendation for any particular type of duplicating film. The results might have been different if a different range of densities had been evaluated.

Notes: Abstract Fibrous dysplasia is a relatively rare tumorous lesion in the maxillofacial region. The radiographic appearance of this lesion varies widely in the jaw. Generally, the occurrence rate is higher in the maxilla than in the mandible. The purpose of this study was to report six cases of fibrous dysplasia associated with the maxillary sinus. In this study, we examined radiographic patterns which demonstrated the lesion's affect on the sinus radiographically. Mixed radiopacity and radiolucency (the so-called ground glass appearance) was also seen in each of these cases. In four cases in which CT images were obtained, the lesion showed buccal expansion and infiltration into the maxillary sinus.

Notes: The effect of transforming growth factor-type β 1(TGF-β) on the growth and differentiation of normal human skin keratinocytes cultured in serum-free medium was investigated. TGF-β markedly inhibited the growth of keratinocytes at the concentrations 〉2 ng/ml under low Ca2+ conditions (0.1 mM). Growth inhibition was accompanied by changes in cell functions related to proliferation. Remarkable inhibition of DNA synthesis was demonstrated by the decrease of [3H]thymidine incorporation. The decrease of [3H]thymidine incorporation was observed as early as 3 hr after addition of TGF-β. TGF-β also decreased c-myc messenger RNA (mRNA) expression 30 min after addition of TGF-β. This rapid reduction of c-myc mRNA expression by TGF-β treatment is possibly one of the main factors in the process of TGF-β-induced growth inhibition of human keratinocytes. Since growth inhibition and induction of differentiation are closely related in human keratinocytes, the growth-inhibitory effect of TGF-β under high Ca2+ conditions (1.8 mM Ca2+ differentiation-promoting culture environment) was examined. TGF-β inhibited the growth of keratinocytes under high Ca2+ conditions in the same manner as under low Ca2+ conditions, suggesting that it is a strong growth inhibitor in both low and high Ca2+ environments. The induction of keratinocyte differentiation was evaluated by measuring involucrin expression and cornified envelope formation: TGF-β at 20 ng/ml increased in-volucrin expression from 9.3% to 18.8% under high Ca2+ conditions, while it decreased involucrin expression from 7.0% to 3.3% under low Ca2+ conditions. Cornified envelope formation was modulated in a similar way by addition of TGF-β: TGF-β at 20 ng/ml decreased cornified envelope formation by 53% under low Ca2+ conditions, while it enhanced cornified envelope formation by 30.7% under high Ca2+ conditions. Thus, the effect of TGF-β on keratinocyte differentiation is Ca2+ dependent. It enhances differentiation of human keratinocytes under high Ca2+ conditions, but inhibits differentiation under low Ca2+ conditions. Taken together, there is a clear discrepancy between TGF-β effects on growth inhibition and induction of differentiation in human keratinocytes. These data indicate that growth inhibition of human keratinocytes by TGF-β is direct and not induced by differentiation.
