Notes: Abstract. We report a rare case of intrapancreatic accessory spleen which radiologically mimicked a pancreatic hypervascular tumor. The diagnosis of an intrapancreatic accessory spleen should be considered when a pancreatic mass has the CT densities and/or MR signal intensities similar to those of the spleen, with and without contrast medium.

Notes: Abstract Background: To evaluate the findings of altered flow dynamics in the livers of patients with obstruction of superior vena cava (SVC) on helical computed tomography (CT). Methods: In six patients (age range = 28–80 years) with SVC obstruction, CT findings were retrospectively reviewed to identify the abnormal enhancement patterns of the liver and the relation with the extrahepatic collateral vessels and hepatic vessels. Results: Abnormal hepatic enhancement was observed in the following four (A–D) portions: (A) anterior portion of segment IV (n = 5), (B) subdiaphragmatic portion of the liver (n = 4), (C) posterior portion of the right lobe (bare area; n = 1), and (D) lateral segment of the left lobe (n = 2). Two major collateral pathways to the liver were demonstrated as follows: A and D → from the umbilical vein to the left portal vein, and B and C → from the subcapsular vein to the bare area of the liver or to the hepatic veins. On helical CT, these collateral pathways were also clearly visualized. Conclusion: When these abnormal enhancements of the liver on CT are recognized within the liver, these findings indicate diversion of contrast material into collateral pathways to the liver with SVC obstruction.

Notes: Summary We studied the effective site of an inhaled aerosol of procaterol, a β2-selective adrenergic bronchodilator, in 8 asthmatic patients whose basal lung functions are almost within the normal range in both slow vital capacity (VC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1.0), and are free from asthmatic attack. In patients who had received procaterol 30 min after inhalation of aerosol, there was no significant change in VC, although FEV1.0, maximal expiratory flow at 50% VC $$(\dot V_{50} )$$ , maximal expiratory flow at 25% VC $$(\dot V_{25} )$$ and maximal expiratory flow at 30% VC of partial maximal expiratory flow volume curve $$(\dot V_{30p} )$$ improved significantly. On the other hand, in those who had received placebo, none of the parameters changed. Furthermore, Rl decreased and C0.5 increased significantly during the first 5 min after inhalation of procaterol aerosol. After an interval of 5 min, Rl did not change any further, while C0.5 continued to improve until 30 min after inhalation of procaterol. These results suggest that procaterol may first dilate the large airway and then may gradually dilate the small airway in bronchial asthma.

Notes: Abstract We cloned a DNA repair gene, mus-8, of Neurospora crassa and sequenced the genomic DNA and cDNA. Nucleotide-sequence analysis indicated that the mus-8 gene contains an open reading frame (ORF) of 456 bp, interrupted by three small introns. The deduced amino-acid sequence showed that the mus-8 gene encodes a 17 kDa protein which has 77.5% and 83.3% identity to the Rad6 protein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the rhp6+ protein of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, respectively. The Rad6 protein is a ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme (E2) and is required for DNA repair, mutagenesis, and sporulation in yeast. Introduction of the mus-8 gene into a S. cerevisiae rad6 mutant resulted in significant recovery of DNA repair functions, especially UV-mutagenesis, and also sporulation, both of which are defective in the rad6 mutant. It is therefore postulated that mus-8 of Neurospora has a function very similar to that demonstrated for RAD6 of S. cerevisiae.

Notes: Abstract A Neurospora crassa gene encoding a product with homology to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rad1 nucleotide excision repair (NER) protein was isolated by degenerate PCR. The predicted protein consists of 892 amino acids with a molecular weight of 100.4 kDa, and 32–37% identity to the XPF/ERCC4 protein family. The homolog was mapped to the left arm of linkage group I, the location of the mus-38 gene. Subsequently, gene inactivation and complementation studies identified the RAD1 homolog as mus-38. Immunological assays showed that the mus-18 (UV-specific endonuclease) and mus-38 strains have partial and normal UV-damage excision activities, respectively, but removal of thymine dimers and TC (6-4) photoproducts is abolished in the mus-18 mus-38 double mutant. The double mutant also was synergistically more sensitive to UV than either single mutant. The data suggest that mus-38 may participate in a different NER pathway from that involving the mus-18 gene.

Notes: Abstract We have isolated and characterized a Neurospora crassa cytoplasmic ribosomal protein gene, named crp-7, which is found upstream of the photolyase gene. The deduced amino-acid sequence of this gene is highly homologous to the YS25 ribosomal protein of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The crp-7 ORF consists of two exons which are separated by a short intron. The deduced polypeptide contains 87 amino acid residues and has a calculated molecular weight of 9.7 kDa. RFLP mapping showed that the crp-7 gene is located on the right arm of linkage group I. Southern blot hybridization analyses indicated that there is only one copy of the crp-7 gene in the N. crassa genome. Transcriptional elements, the Dde box, the Taq box and the CG element, that have been identified in other N. crassa ribosomal protein genes are observed in the promoter region of the crp-7 gene. The crp-7 mRNA levels were low in conidia and highest in young mycelia during vegetative growth. The mRNA levels of four r-protein genes, including the crp-7 gene, as well as the tef-1 gene encoding translational elongation factor 1α, were raised following the treatment of mycelia with a low concentration of cycloheximide. This indicates that the expression of r-protein genes is under the control of so-called super-induction.

Notes: Er3+ doped BaTi2O5 spherical glasses were prepared using a containerless processing withan aerodynamic levitation furnace. These glasses were found to have high solubility of Er3+ and thesubstitution ratio of Er3+ for Ba2+ reached 30 %. Differential scanning calorimetry measurementsrevealed that the glass transition temperature Tg and the crystallization onset temperature Tx shifted tohigh temperatures and the value of [removed info]T (= Tx – Tg) increased with substitution of Er3+, indicating thatthe stability against crystallization improved. We found that these glasses had high refractive indicesexceeding 2.1 with low Abbe numbers of approximately 20

Notes: Summary The characteristic findings of metrizamide CT cisternography in two cases of epidermoid are reported. The main finding was a “cauliflower-like” appearance and was thought to be caused by the irregular interstices of epidermoids. Metrizamide CT cisternography may be helpful in making a diagnosis of an epidermoid.

Notes: Summary Nineteen cases of malignant meningiomas-seven haemangiopericytic, two papillary and ten of the anaplastic type-were examined clinicopathologically. These were ten male and nine female patients and eleven of these received reoperation for recurrence. Tumours of the hemangiopericytic type had similar angiographic and macrooscopic features and malignant characteristics were found microscopically in some tumours. There were intratumoral cysts in both cases of the papillary type and these tumours had a high cellularity, an increased number of mitosis, haemorrhage and partially haemangiopericytic patterns. Six cases of the anaplastic type had changed from a benign type at recurrence and those tumours had variable features radiographically and macroscopically. Lack of typical arrangement, a large number of mitoses, increased cellularity, focal necrosis, brain infiltration, pleomorphism and anaplasia were found histologically. Four cases of the anaplastic type were diagnosed at the first operation and these tumours had apparently similar angiographic and macroscopic features, but with variable organoid structures and malignant forms, microscopically. Electron microscopic features are also described. In malignant meningiomas, the recurrence rate was high even in cases of total removal. The outcome for these patients was good in the papillary type, relatively good in the haemangiopericytic type and poor in the anaplastic type. From these results therapeutic indications are also suggested.
