Notes: The styrene derivatives vinylbenzyl chloride and isopropenylbenzyl chloride were prepared and copolymerized with isobutylene and propylene in order to produce polymers with reactive halogens. Vinylbenzyl chloride and isobutylene have relative reactivities such that the copolymer is much richer in isobutylene than the starting mixture, while with isopropenylbenzyl chloride and isobutylene the difference in reactivities is less and is in the opposite direction. Copolymers containing small amounts of the reactive benzylic chlorine were vulcanized, either with amines or with a conventional butyl rubber cure. Permselective membranes were prepared from copolymers rich in benzylic chlorine.

Notes: The reversible reaction with di-hydrazides in acidic solution or polyamines in alkaline solution is used to cause synthetic polymers containing labile carbonyl groups to gel with sharp thermoreversibility in dilute water solution. Some of the polymers described contain active methylenes, for example, partially acetoacetylated polyvinyl alcohol and polyethylenimine, and copolymer of allyl acetoacetate with acrylamide. These polymers function also as couplers for azo and azomethine dye formation.

Notes: Polymers and copolymers of a quaternary monomer, vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride, have been studied. A product similar to that previously obtained by partially chloromethylating polystyrene and aminating with trimethylamine has been made. The product with 15 to 25 mole per cent quaternary groups forms metastable aqueous solutions. Light scattering measurements in the presence of added salt do not indicate aggregation. The quaternary monomer exhibits micellar behavior in conductivity measurements. Copolymers with acrylamide are water-soluble and substantive to paper pulp; copolymers in minor amount with acrylonitrile are dyeable with acid dyes; copolymers in minor amounts with styrene are clear and free of tendency to pick-up or maintain a static charge.

Notes: 2-Chloromethylbutadiene has been converted to quaternary ammonium and sulfonium monomers which have been polymerized at room temperature. They show a very great tendency to dimerize on heating in water solution. The aqueous quaternary monomer dimerized 25 times as fast as the aqueous sulfonium monomer and nearly 105 times as fast as neat isoprene at 50°C. The quaternary monomer dimerized with itself in a water solution to which 2-hydroxymethylbutadiene has been added as an example of a nonionic diene. The latter monomer did not dimerize rapidly in water, nor did 2-aminomethylbutadiene. The hydrochlorides of 2-aminomethylbutadiene and 2-dimethylaminomethylbutadiene dimerized at rates comparable to that of the sulfonium monomer. Poly 2-chloromethylbutadiene contains reactive chlorine except for the structure resulting from the minor extent of 1,2 addition. Water-soluble derivatives have been made from it with nucleophilic tertiary amines and sulfides. Cationic polymers are substantive to paper pulp, and the sulfonium polymers can be cured in paper to give improved wet strength.
