    Notes: Summary The puma (Felis concolor) has the most extensive range of any terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, covering over 100° latitude. Food habits of different puma subspecies vary with latitude. Subspecies from temperate habitats generally eat larger prey and specialize on a smaller number of prey taxa, whereas, in tropical habitats, they prey on smaller, more varied prey. In North America, ungulates (primarily deer) represented 68% of the puma's diet by frequency of occurrence. Mean weight of vertebrate prey (MWVP) was positively correlated (r=0.875) with puma body weight and inversely correlated (r=-0.836) with food niche breadth in all America. In general, MWVP was lower in areas closer to the Equator. Patterns of puma prey selection are probably influenced by prey availability and vulnerability, habitat characteristics, and potential competition from the jaguar (Panthera onca).

    Notes: Summary A laboratory study of mammalian predation on termites was conducted using the burrowing mouse (Oxymycterus roberti) and eight species of central Brazilian termites. The results of preference trials demonstrate that Oxymycterus discriminate between termite species and that the eight prey species fall into three groups: least preferred, most-preferred and a group of intermediate preference. Preferences of Oxymycterus are not explained by the size or the nutritional quality of the termite species. However, three measures of termite soldier-based defense do correlate highly with preference. Termite species with soldiers exhibiting a mechanical or mixed defense are greatly preferred by Oxymycterus over species with soldiers exhibiting a chemical based defense. This chemical defense by termites is effective in severely limiting predation by small mammals.

    Notes: Summary The relationship of diet and phylogeny to the intrinsic rate of population increase (r max) was examined in a sample of 39 mammalian species that live in Neotropical forests. Diets of species did not predict their r max, contrary to published predictions based on associations between basal metabolic rate and diet and between basal metabolic rate and r max. Phylogeny did however, apparently because life history characteristics and susceptibility to predation vary predictably with phylogeny and with one another.

    Notes: Abstract Rats and mice were exposed for periods of up to six months and two successive generations of mice were raised in a ground-level chamber system filled with 80% helium −20% oxygen, at 24°C. A duplicate chamber for controls contained a comparable nitrogen-oxygen mixture, and in both the other environmental parameters were well-controlled and nearly identical. Animals adapted to helium showed no greater increase in oxygen consumption (P〉0.05) when placed in helium-oxygen than did those raised in air. Growth rates were identical, but the helium mice consumed more food and water. Selected biochemical analyses were made on the parent and two successive generations of mice. These included blood indices; electrophoretically separated tissue protein patterns from liver, skeletal muscle, and cardiac muscle; quantitative determinations of LDH, MDH, and G6PDH from the same tissues; serum insulin; and semi-quantitative histochemical estimates of liver glycogen. No cases of statistically significant difference or consistent trends were seen between the experimental environmental groups. Additional analyses of liver nucleotides and redox-coenzymes also failed to show a significant difference. The relative weights of liver, heart, kidney, and diaphragm (wet and dry) were the same in both groups. Histopathological examination of kidney and adrenal tissue produced unremarkable findings and none that were attributable to the nature of the gaseous environment. It must be concluded that prolonged exposure to helium-oxygen, relative to air, does not produce detectable changes in several key subcellular factors which might be altered by serious metabolic disturbances, and therefore the helium exposure is well tolerated.

    Notes: Abstract Fruit and insects are two of the major components of primate diets. Previous investigators have often assumed that the consumption of fruit by primates was unassociated with the consumption of insects. We contend that much of what has been termed fruit-eating by primates involves a significant and deliberate ingestion of insects. The implications of this are discussed.

    Notes: NOrmal and atypical follicular structures were classified and counted in the ovaries of guinea pigs 3 to 11 weeks of age. The per cent of primary and secondary follicles remain almost constant throughout the period of observation. Corpora lutea appeared at the fifth week and reached what appeared to be the mature level by the sixth week. The per cent of follicles having polynuclear ova reached an early peak at four weeks and decreased sharply at five weeks postpartum. The per cent of polyovular follicles increased to a low peak at nine weeks and decreased in frequency thereafter. The frequencies of atretic follicles with polynuclear ova and of quency thereafter. The frequencies of atretic follicles with polynuclear ova and of atretic polyovular follicles were significantly higher than that of atretic normal follicles. The results of this study were compared to simular observations on the Swiss mouse, Golden Hamster and Sprague-Dawley rat. The data were discussed in relation to gonadotripic hormone levels.
