Notes: Abstract The phenomenon associated with sonic discontinuities in non-equilibrium magnetogasdynamics has been studied by the use of singular surface theory. The fundamental differential equations for growth and decay of sonic discontinuities have been formulated for general class of relaxing gas applying compatibility conditions for surface of discontinuity in continuum mechanics. This class of equations have been solved completely and for particular case of plane. We have also obtained the critical time at which sonic wave terminates in shock wave.

Notes: Abstract An analytic expression for the velocity of magnetogasdynamic shock wave, propagating in rotating inter stellar atmosphere has been obtained by using the method of characteristics and considering the effect of coriolis force. It has been shown that in the outer convective layer of the star Coriolis force and magnetic field both have significant effect on the shock velocity.

Notes: Abstract A non-similarity solution for propagation of magnetogasdynamic blast waves in Roche model is obtained. The density outside the central core varies according to some inverse power of distance from the centre of explosion. The strength of the shock surface heading the disturbance as well as the total energy of the wave vary with time.

Notes: Abstract A quantitative method is presented for the estimation of calcite in limestones by differential thermal analysis, using calcium hydroxide as an internal standard. The effects of variations due to particle size and impurities such as quartz, iron oxide, organic material, dolomite, magnesite, gypsum and phosphates are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Experimental nephropathy has been induced in rabbits using an indigenous preparation of gold, popularly known as “Gold Kushta”. Proteinuria and associated renal glomerular lesions of variable severity were observed in the animals on Kushta feed and those injected with sodium aurothiomalate. In addition, a probable mechanism of gold-induced nephropathy is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Aluminium nitride films were grown on silicon substrates using the chemical vapour deposition (CVD) method. The properties of the films were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) measurements, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering. The resulting films were strongly textured and had a preferential orientation with the c-axis normal to the surface, the Raman spectra showed two peaks at 607 and 653 cm−1 and two large bands at 750 and 900 cm−1 of smaller intensity. Both the macro- and micro-Raman spectra showed the same peaks.

Notes: Abstract The method of proton particle-induced X-ray emission (proton PIXE) has been employed to study the trace element composition of human fingernails. The samples were colleted from 51 subjects randomly selected from a working community of about 500 adults and they were analyzed by the thick-target external beam technique of the PIXE method. The samples were exposed to the proton beam as 1-mm thick pellets and irradiated with 2 MeV protons having 20 nA beam intensity. For 40 μC irradiations, the concentration of fourteen elements, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr and Pb, were measured by comparison with a calibration obtained from the NBS orchard leaf standard (SRM 1571). Some anomalous cases have been revealed from this study and they are attributed to environmental factors. The frequency distributions of the elements are presented and the results compared with available data.
