Summary Among the microscopic methods, a distinction can be made between those, which presuppose special knowledge, and those, which can be applied directly or which can be learned readily. A complete microscopic characterization is possible only with mastery of the crystallographic methods. However, the microchemist, after acquiring several general skills in crystallology, can determine single constants, which give excellent service for characterizing and identifying purposes. However, he must guard against the improper use of crystal-optical technical terms. Not too much weight can be put on the external form of crystals for diagnostic purposes. The serviceability of the microscopic methods for microchemistry can be greatly enhanced in many cases by the hot-stage microscope. This makes possible not only the determination of the melting point with minute amounts of the sample, but in addition permits an extensive characterization of organic substances and their mixtures (e. g., by determination of the eutectic temperatures with suitable mixing materials, or through the determination of the light refraction with the aid of the glass powder scale). Particularly successful is the use of the hot-stage microscope in combination with crystal-optical methods, e. g., in studies of polymorphism and in thermal analyses.
