Notes: This paper deals with the application of Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) concepts to study mode Ifracture in adhesive bonded joints. In particular, an intrinsic piece-wise linear cohesive surfacerelation is used in order to model fracture in a pre-cracked bonded Double Cantilever Beam (DCB)specimen. Finite element implementation of the CZM is accomplished by means of the user element(UEL) feature available in the FE commercial code ABAQUS. The sensitivity of the cohesive zoneparameters (i.e. fracture strength and critical energy release rate) in predicting the overallmechanical response is first examined; subsequently, cohesive parameters are tuned comparingnumerical simulations of the load-displacement curve with experimental results retrieved fromliterature

Notes: Summary The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was examined in 90 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and in 50 age-matched normal controls. Total protein concentration was significantly higher in ALS patients than in normal controls. CSF IgG and albumin, quantitatively determined by single radial immunodiffusion, were significantly increased in ALS. No difference in serum concentrations was observed between ALS patients and normal controls. On isoelectric focusing a clear-cut “fingerprint” pattern was observed in 11 of 12 cases. These findings support the hypothesis that blood-brain barrier damage occurs in ALS. The finding of a higher mononuclear cell count in young ALS patients is briefly discussed in the light of the hypothesis that an exogenous agent might be of some relevance in pathogenesis. An alteration of at least one of the CSF parameters considered was found in 45.5% of ALS cases.

Notes: Summary An 8 month old infant, who died of severe gastroenteritis, presented a degeneration of the cerebellar cortex involving cells arising from the outer granular layer as well as Purkinje and Golgi II cells. Residual Purkinje cells showed vacuolar change of the cell body and dendritic abnormalities. Related lesions were atrophy of the inferior olives and degeneration of the mossy fibers.

Notes: Summary It has been suggested that molecular foundations of phenotypic diversity reside in the variability of genome expression. This variability can be appraised through the polymorphism of individual protein amounts (PAP: protein amount polymorphism). Eight maize inbred lines and ten of their single-cross hybrids were analyzed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in order to examine the potential of PAP for predicting hybrid vigor. The 28 possible pairs of lines were characterized for: (i) the number, H of expected heterozygous structural loci in their hybrid, in the sample of loci revealed by 2D-PAGE; (ii) four distance indices based on PAP; (iii) the hybrid values for five agromorphological characters measured in four different year/locations. For the subset of ten hybrids analyzed by 2D-PAGE, the number of cases of nonadditive inheritance (NA) was also counted. Whereas H appeared to be related neither to the PAP indices, nor to NA, nor to hybrid performances, PAP indices were correlated to NA, and both were positively associated to hybrid performances. The possibility that PAP is responsible for quantitative trait variation is discussed. This could result in the definition of biological predictors of heterosis.

Notes: Abstract At different locations in Zürich (urban and suburban area) ambient aerosol has been measured by a variety of methods. Total mass concentration, black carbon mass concentration, size distribution, Fuchs surface and photoelectric charging of particles (as a measure for the PAH concentration) have been determined. As a reference for “fresh” aerosol, measurements have also been carried out in a car parking garage. By comparing the data obtained at different locations and different times of the day aging processes can be investigated. All measured signals show significant peaks during the rush-hours, indicating that the majority of the particles arise from automotive traffic. Aging is expressed by decreasing number concentrations, increasing diameter (coagulation) and decreasing black carbon and PAH content of the particles. The decrease in PAH and black carbon fraction may be due to mixing of the aerosol with non-combustion particles or by condensation of material from the gas phase on the particle; the decrease in PAH concentration may also be due to degradation of the PAHs.

Notes: Abstract Thalamic dementia usually results from a bilateral paramedian thalamic infarction. We report a case with typical clinical and neuropsychological features of thalamic dementia, but with CT evidence of an unusual and asymmetrical location of ischemic lesions. Somatosensory evoked potential recordings were consistent with a left medial thalamic infarction, associated with a contralateral lesion, possibly at lemniscal level. This case suggests that thalamic dementia may develop following a unilateral paramedian thalamic infarction

Notes: Abstract Large numbers of neurofibrillary tangles and neuritic plaques were found in a cerebral biopsy from a 52-year-old woman suffering from subacute dementia with early myoclonus and quasiperiodic EEG changes. This case, which appeared to be an example of non-familial Alzheimer's disease, is commented in the context of possible relation of Alzheimer's disease to transmissible dementia.

Notes: Abstract During a febrile upper respiratory tract illness this 4 year old boy developed left hemiparesis, which progressed to loss of walking and even of sitting finally to tetraplegia. The cerebrospinal fluid protein pattern showed blood-brain barrier damage with additional intrathecal IgG synthesis. The symptoms responded to steroid therapy but resumed and worsened on withdrawal. Only late, when visual evoked potentials and nerve conduction velocity proved to be impaired, was Krabbe disease diagnosed on the assay of cultured fibroblasts for galactocerebroside-beta-galactosidase. We discuss the significance of possible endogenous production of IgG in the CNS.
